Excellent UHD Blu-ray Player

I had tried the Samsung UBD-K8500 before getting this Philips BDP7501, the Samsung had issues with my TV -- it would not play 24fps and only played discs at 60Hz. The Philips worked right out of the box with my TV. The setup was very quick and easy and it has played every disc that I have thrown at it.
I have played DVDs, Blu-rays and UHD Blu-rays in the player without any issues. I have had slight issues with discs from the local library that are scratched. The discs worked in my PS4, but the Philips seemed to have issues with them. It is not a big deal though. The picture quality is fantastic coming out the player and since I do not have a 4k TV that has HDR, the player does a good job of dynamically converting the HDR to SDR for my TV. The upscaling of DVDs look fantastic when compared with Samsung and Sony BD players. The upscaling of BD discs make them almost as stunning as UHD BDs.
The Philips also comes with a HDMI cable and a copy of Creed on UHD Blu-ray. That's something that Samsung does not do. Are you listening Samsung? If you're going to sell something at a premium price, you should at least include a HDMI cable.
The player itself is really solid and has a heft to it. The brushed exterior looks really nice. The remote is large and the buttons give great feedback. This in comparison to the tiny remote that Samsung includes with their UHD Blu-ray player.
The one thing that I have to mention is that the Philips is sometimes a little slow when performing actions -- especially when skipping consecutive chapters on BD and UHD BD discs. There are only two streaming apps (Netflix and Youtube), both support 4k streaming. The Netflix app also supports HDR. If you need more apps, get a Roku or use the ones built into your TV.
The Philips looks like an Apple TV gen 4's bigger brother, it is not large (it is square 8.5"x8.5") and fits nicely on my entertainment stand. There is a power and disc eject button on top of the player. The power button lights up when the player is on. There is no display of any kind on the player (a good thing since I usually turn displays off). And on the back there is a USB port that allows for playing videos, pictures and music. The file formats supported can be found on the Philips website. I tried playing FLAC music on the Philips both on USB and burned to a DVD and it played them just fine.
If you're hesitant about getting this player because it doesn't have a brand name like Samsung, Sony or Panasonic, don't be. This player works great and I have yet to have any shop-stopping issues with it. And it costs less than the Samsung UHD BD player, works better than it and fits better than it on an entertainment stand (the Samsung is almost twice as wide as the Philips).

I have had Samsung K8500 and the new Xbox One S and had issues with both. Samsung had random handshake issues and video drops; also was too wide and made horrendous mechanical noise when opening and closing the tray. Xbox started out good, but then developed a washed out look in all my 4k blurays and plus no Dolby Atmos yet. Enter the Philips. Small footprint and no noise opening and closing the tray, plus much more silent in operation in general vs the Samsung. Seems to be loading the disks a bit quicker than both Samsung and Xbox. Very no frills interface, real workman like. I do wish it had more streaming apps (right now it only has Netfilx and Youtube) and more graphic interface. Having said that, the main function of this unit is to play 4k blurays and, in my opinion, it plays them better than Sammy and Xbox, so there...Plus Philips throws in a full retail copy of Creed in 4k and an HDR high speed cable. Classy...

I got this player around Balck Friday for about $200. Everything works well and looks great. I read quite a few reviews before buying this and the main draw back for this player is it's lack of Apps. It only has Netflix and YouTube if I'm not mistaken. There are only three or four 4k players out at this time. This is one of the less expensive ones and isn't as good as the Panasonic or Oppo, fairly evenly matched with Samsungs player and better than the Xbox One S if you're just talking about it's ability to play 4k content since it has DTS:X/Dolby Atmos sound(Xbox One S doesn't). If I had it to do over again I would probably go with the Samsung player since my TV is also a Samsung, but it is a good player at a good price and has all the essentials. Better players will inevitably be released and prices will drop in the next year but for someone like myself that didn't want to spend a lot it was a good option.

Works as advertised, included a high speed HDMI cable, and up-converts Blue Ry disks as promised. Doesn’t have front panel display, but you can get this information from the info button on the remote. I previously read that the unit doesn’t turn on/off remotely but I does. Plays native 4K Blue Ray disks perfectly and up-converts DVD and Blue Ray disks to (near) 4K perfectly. I compared this product to other manufacturers with much higher prices and I am completely satisfied with the Philips for the price and highly recommend this product.
Pros:
Works as advertised, includes a high speed HDMI cable, and up-converts Blue Ry disks as promised.
Cons:
None found yet but occasionally during playback, briefly displays a line of video transitions in the picture image. Not sure if this is true for all $k players and only occasionally noticed this while playing Blue Ray disk with my previous Sony player. Perhaps due to layer transition.

This player was my 2nd choice after the VERY disappointing 1st choice of the Samsung UHD version.
So many people raved and praised the Samsung but it was quite the opposite. I returned the other player and bought this Philips 7501 and am so happy with it and more than impressed! The picture quality of not just the 4K discs, but Blu-ray Discs as well is amazing!
It was super easy to set up, has a simple menu and simple features that are basic but nice. For the money, this player is well worth it! I like that it's not big and long/wide. I have a Vizio 60" 4K UHD tv and this player paired with that tv or any good quality UHD TV is the perfect pair. I hope people give this player a chance and pass along to others the high quality of the product. I noticed a BIG difference in picture between this and the Samsung, again, this Philips is made to impress! If you want quality and amazing picture, BUY the PHILIPS 7501 and you will be very happy you did! Star Wars- the Force Awakens blu-ray looks stunning!!
Thanks Philips! Great job with this one.

Well it was this one or the samsung for $399 which I had been watching for a good sale price. I was in Costco which had it priced for $299 in some bundle deal. I didn't even check to if it could be sold for that price sans bundle, I just checked my trusty Best Buy app to see how much it was selling. What I did see was this Phillips which I was also watching and what did I see? This Phillips on sale for $249. I read the reviews again and after seeing this player does what the Samsung player does for the most part but was cheaper, comes with a free movie and was cheaper plus comes with the 4K UHD HDMI cable which the Samsung doesn't and did I mention was cheaper, it was a done deal. My only issue was it only came with just two apps, Netflix and YouTube. That's actually a small issue since my smart TV has apps of its own so I'm pretty happy with my purchase. By the way yes the colors are deeper, the clarity is sharper and e en the sounds sound better n the movies I've watched. That's movies on regular DVD, blue ray movies, 3D movies and of course th 4K UHD movies that are a different more enhanced experience al it itself.

Overall this is a great buy.
Pros: Good picture quality, small footprint, price, comes w/ HDMI 2.0compliant cable, comes w/ movie, o.k. remote, on screen display can give a lot of details after setting up.
Cons: Slow to load, menu is uninspiring, apps near useless since most TV's have these two already.
I had to look through many reviews to learn something important for the settings. If you want 4:4:4 color for HDR you might need to turn off UHD wide dynamic color on both your tv(usually needing a restart) and the player. It seems this was a legacy setting for DVDs & Blu-rays to help them look better in 4k but actually will prevent certain high end color schemes from working for UHD discs.

When it came down to the big 3 (at the time of me writing this) UHD players (K8500, Xbox One S, BDP7501) I chose this one for the following reasons.
-Cheaper
-Netflix HDR (currently 2015 Samsung TV's currently do not have this feature)
-Better overall picture from what I have researched
-The K8500 does not have Netflix HDR (however it does have Amazon which I have on my TV so it is not needed)
-K8500 seems to feel cheaply made
-Xbox One S does not have dual HDMI out (this is needed for my older receiver)
-Xbox One S does not bitstream audio
Pros
-Built very nicely (reminds me of an Apple device)
-Dual HDMI out
-Netflix HDR
-Free UHD movie packed in (which is also a con for me since its not a movie i would watch)
Cons
-Expensive!
-No Front display
-Only 2 apps (Youtube/Netflix)~This is not a Con for me but others should know
-Some knowledge required for setup (people should research some UHD terms before jumping in)
-Slow loading times
Tips on setup:
I have a Samsung JS9500 and for a decent picture/sound I had to do the following.
-Set to 4:4:4
-Turn deep color off (you will see major banding if you don't do this)
-Turn secondary audio off (otherwise True HD and DTSHD won't show up)

I held off on the only other UHD 4K player available at this time (excluding Xbox One S) and I'm glad I did. After hooking this Philips up to my A/V receiver which just recently received a DTS:X firmware update, I am very pleased with the visual quality this player displays (set to play UHD blu-ray discs at 4k 60p and upconvert standard blu-ray to 4k) and with bitstream set (which btw, the Xbox One S does not support), my receiver identifies and outputs DTS:X surround. I'm not too fond of the remote, so I have this player programmed in my Logitech Harmony remote and it works like a charm. Others have complained about the lack of built in apps, but the fact is I have plenty of app choices from my 4k TV and more from my game console. If you're not worried about the lack of apps and just want an all around great 4k UHD player, give this one a look.

I am very happy with the performance of this 4K UHD Blu-Ray player. Of course watching a 4K movie on it with my 4K tv is fantastic but what impressed me even more is the upscaling of a non 4K blu ray. I watched Star Wars a New Hope blu ray and it upscaled very well. The upscaled Technology is amazing. Very happy and worth every penny for movie lovers.

I wanted to start off by saying I purchased this to replace the Samsung UBD8500 since it does not pass 10bit for HDR. They are currently not offering any firmware updates to fix this. So I purchased this to go with my Epson 5040UB 4K Enhanced projector so I could take advantage of FULL 4K enhancement. For a small profile unit this is an amazing UHD player. It has a host of menu selections and options and it comes with a Full sized remote which is excellent. Picture quality is also very good compared to the Samsung (which I'm no longer using). Build quality is very good and solid and this is very pleasing to look at. It has "no" display other than the power button and the eject buttons which do light up on the top. I'm very happy with this unit for the price and the local Best Buy stores do have this as an in stock item.

Its works great. I like this small shape more than the samsung. Very simplistic start screen. Love the quick start mode, its turns on even with the play button. I woulda got the obox one s, but it doesnt say it plays 3d blurays. 4 stars because the remote must be pointed directly to player to send a signal, otherwise its very big with texture delineating buttons, unlike samsungs baby remote that has no fast fwd button.

I purchased my 4K TV last November (Sony XBR55X850C) and have watched a number of 4K titles by streaming such as Marco Polo and Daredevil, But none of the 4K content I have watched through streaming compares to a disc. I just watched Allegiant as a test run and on a 55 you can only see so much of an impact by increasing the number of pixels but let me tell you the HDR is phenomenal and this movie isn't even known for having a great range of colors and yet every shade of each color seemed so much better than I remember when I watched it with basic up scaling on an online 1080p rental.
My only complaint and it's not really a complaint is that to get the audio to work I have to run a seperate HDMI cable to my Sony HTNT5 from the HDMI audio out port and then run a HDMI to the HDMI input on my TV.
When running a 4K source through a cord to your Sony TV be sure to format your HDMI input to advanced so it can recognize the 4K HDR content.
Overall great product and I am very happy with it, it has exceeded all of my expectations.

I went into Best Buy to purchase the Samsung 8500 for Christmas but they were sold out. I had compared the 8500 and the 7501 ahead of time and had decided on the 8500 even though it was $30 more based on the built in apps it had. When I got to the store, the price of the 8500 had been reduced and it was $20 less than the 7501. I asked the store if they would match the price of the 8500 and they did. The unit was dead easy to install. NOTE you must be very careful in what HDMI port you use and make sure that you plug it into the correct HDCP 2.2 capable port on the TV. This is a MUST or you will not get 4K! Google this topic if you are unsure!

If you are looking for a basic 4K Blu-ray player, the Philips may be the one to get.
For about $250 you get a player that will produce a great picture on your TV. However, if you are connecting to a receiver it may not be so easy.
I hooked up my player to a Pioneer Elite receiver and could not get a digital sound output--only analog. I actually called Philips that told me to connect to a digital out or optical out port. The problem was that this Philips player only had an HDMI port--no other digital ports were on the device.
If you have a simple connection with your 4K TV, you may not have this problem, but anything more complicated could be a problem.
This Philips player does operate flawlessly, but do not select this unit if you have a complicated system.

I understand it's all about perspective and the 'director's vision', but I'm not a fan of the fixed letterbox display. I read all the reviews and was familiar with hdr and adjustments that had to be made on my Sony 4k tv prior to purchase. The player does what it's suppose to - play 4k disks well. Best price available for this type of product. Loved the ease of setup. Still no way to eliminate the large letterbox. Good chance I'll be returning this and accept the 1080 blue ray as a more acceptable full screen viewing experience.

For the price, this player is great. With 4k fast becoming the new standard adoption has been slow on the player front. I see the companies now making the players affordable to the point everyone can now savor a piece of the 4k pie. This player delivers great playback. I've had so called 4k upconverting players and they can't touch what this player can do. They just don't seem to have the on board technology this player does. It truly unleashes your bluray collection. I've been very impressed with this player and what I've seen it display.
