Customers are saying

Customers are impressed with Pokken Tournament's smooth and deep gameplay, finding it fun and easy to pick up and play. However, some feel the game is lacking in content, particularly citing a limited roster of characters and a weak story mode. The controls are generally praised as simple and intuitive.

Pokkén Tournament is basically a Tekken clone with Pokémon characters and abilities - and that's a smashing thing. Fans of Pokémon who have wanted combat gameplay similar to seeing the animated show will very much enjoy Pokkén Tournament.

This is the pokemon game we wanted when it first came out 20 years ago. It's a fighting game, with odd camera mechanics, but nothing you won't get used to quickly. It's not really a button masher, (though you CAN play it that way) and combinations are not like Soul Calibur/Mortal Kombat, so anyone can learn them. So, with mechanics out of the way, here's what it offers. Pros: Variation in character playing style, move sets, tactics, and gameplay scenarios. Customization of your character, and fair to good online function. Online lag is often not noticeable, unlike Smash. Notes: All amiibo work with this game in the form of item unlocks, flair, etc. The only controllers compatible are Wii remote + nunchuck, classic controller, game pad, pro controller, and the pokken special controller. Cons: Limited roster of playable fighters, however it seems that after unlocking a few, there are spots for DLC. Story mode is alright, but it becomes repetitive for veterans of the fighting genre. I'm not one of those people, but I can still see this happening. All in all, it has some really fun aspects, but I don't see this game bringing much in the sense of replay value to the table.

For those of you on the fence about this title because it has Pokémon splashed across the title, rest assured it's solid. Namco and Nintendo have joined hands again, and like Sm4sh, they've created a love child that molds the pros of each and diminishes any cons. Namco is the parent of Soul Caliber, and like Soul Caliber this game is multi-faceted for a fighter. When fighting there's two types of face-offs, Duel Mode where Pokémon are fixed in X and Y axis planes, and Field Mode where Pokémon fight in XYZ. The differences between both modes is large, but the gist is that Field Mode focuses on projectiles and homing in on a target, while Duel Mode is the typical weak attack, strong attack and special attack command layout seen in most fighters like SF, SC, MK and KI. Moves vary by Pokémon, and using certain moves transitions your fighters between these two modes seamlessly, called a Phase Change. On top of these two modes there's a triad between normal attacks, grab attacks, and counter attacks (leave it to Pokémon to stick another triad in the mix!). Grabs are Super Effective! against counters, counters are strong against normal attacks, and normal attacks pop you out of grabs with destructive force. At first, this won't affect fighting the weaker CPU players, but as you move up the league difficulties and fight online players, you HAVE to understand this triad or you WILL GET CURB STOMPED!!! Naturally, there's counter breaks, guard breaks, grab stops, anti aerials, and piercing attacks, so be prepared to spend a lot of time between tutorials and practice modes to learn your favorite Pokémons' move sets. Individual Pokémon differ in performance when used; for example Pikachu is quick to get in and out of skirmishes, has multiple projectiles, and caters to quick execution with hit stuns. His counter ego, Pikachu Libre is HEAVY on grabs and hit stuns, is always in the fray, and performs best by boosting his defense and attack when executing certain moves, up close and in your face. Compare this to brutes like Garchomp and Machamp, or technical devils like Gengar, and Pokkén Tournament is ANYTHING but a button smasher. The graphics are out of site. 60 fps, no lag. Every strand of hair sticks out on Lucario's face. Charizard has individual scales over its visage. When certain players use moves, the moves become incorporated in their attacks, like blue and yellow lighting sparking all over the arena and all over Pikachu's body parts when it uses Electro Ball or Thunder. Namco went all out to slather this fighter in gratuitous amounts of flair and it doesn't disappoint. The Sound is bombastic. If you get headaches from over stimuli, I suggest turning the SFX to 70% range because they're loud. Music is OK, I'd have preferred more themes from the canon like Gym Battle Gen 1, or some of the incredible tracks from XY. Also, the redundancies in voice actors can get annoying. Garchomp's in particular will make you want to strangle the Japanese voice actor who dubbed his. 5/5 out of five is too broad. I'd have given this 9.5/10. My only big criticism is this entry caters to fan favorites heavily. Pikachu, Charizard and Mewtwo are too iconic to leave out, but Gardevoir and Suicune?... That's that fan service Pokkén it's head in (see what I did there?). With 700+ Pokémon currently, a lot of subjective favorites are going to get sidestepped in favor of general ones.

I've been looking forward to playing this game! All the playable Characters are great, and the Gameplay looks epic! I'll probably play Mewtwo, Braixen, Weavile, and, if I get the amiibo card, Shadow Mewtwo, the most of all the Pokémon! Even Better than SSB4! Best Wii U Pokémon Game EVER!!! :D

Pokken tournement is an overall really good fighter game. It's got very good online play, a great feel, and an overall interesting cast of characters. It's was very clear to me though just how much influence Namco had on this game, as I would occasionally find myself switching to a Soul Caliber mindset part way through my early matches. Oviously this wouldn't work out well for me in the end as this clearly isn't Soul Caliber but after a few matches, I stopped trying to block with the b button and began to gradually get better as I played more matches. A lot of the combos really rely on the walls and juggling, as do games like Soul Caliber and Tekken so that was really what caused muscle memory to mess things up for me. It really is a lot of fun though and the game seems mostly balanced, save for an infinite combo discovered for Shadow Mewtwo which will hopefully get patched out soon. The moves themselves are also really simple to input only requiring a single press of a button and a direction similar to Smash Bros and it was also fairly easy to get into. The online is also really good. Matches are found in seconds and I haven't run into too many bad connections. It's ranked mode is one I have played frequently. You start at E5 and through wins you will eventually reach E1 then go to D5 for the next few ranks and so on. Very similar to other Namco fighters. You can also unlock Mewtwo through the story mode and the day one edition has a Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card which unlocks the character. Besides the infinite Shadow Mewtwo isn't really all that unbalanced, it's very much a glass cannon I've beat several playing as Pikachu in some earlier matches. I've said it several times before but this is a really good game and I recommend it to any Pokemon fan, or people mildly interested in Pokemon.

I was waiting for a game like this or another Pokemon Colosseum spin-off like title. This game has its uniqueness with its fighting style with how they incorporated a Field Phase battle where you can view the environment and focus on projectile attacks, as well as the Dual Phase battle where it focuses on the characters close up similar to Tekken. You could perform different attacks during both of those phases as well. The campaign mode can get boring for a while since you have to go through tons of trainers with the very little roster of characters they have. Hoping for DLC plans to bring more characters and stages like Castle N, the Elite 4 Arenas. Would love to see Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Lickitung, Pangoro among others as characters.

Well for a Pokeman game that is. As with other fighting games, you have your different type of attacks, basic block, and leveling of Pokemans. You build up your syneragy power and once build you can unleash it for extended damage, and destruction. You have assist Pokeman that will come out to help add some minor damage, provide some HP or etc. Visually it looked great and that was not even in HD as we took the system with us to relatives house. Gameplay is fun for Pokeman fans and non Pokeman fans. I enjoy this better than Super Smash as I always hated the jump being on the direction instead of a button.

Beautiful graphics. Very unique fighting system. Plays like an arena fighting game but shifts phases to play like 2D Tekken style gameplay. Simple to pick up for casual players but also very deep fighting mechanics with cool combo strings and rock, paper, scissors fighting system. Cool unlockables to customize your avatar but lacking in the single player aspect. Can finish story in a few hours. Fun if you play with friends or online. Online match making is amazing! Super quick match making less than 10 seconds.

The game is easy to learn and has depth to it. Attack are easy to do with just a direction on the d-pad plus a button causing a specific attack. There's no quarter circle, z, or charge motions to do like in Street Fighter, but there are combos and you need to learn when to use each kind of attack to do well against human players. Each Pokemon has a unique play style. Even the two Pikachu and Mewtwo play differently from each other. The game is light on single player content though. There's just the tutorial, a few leagues (just matches with almost no dialogue or story), and free battles against the AI. You'll breeze through the single player leagues in a few hours and the AI doesn't put up much of a fight even on hard. The local multiplayer with one Wii U console makes the game run at 30 fps and one player must use the gamepad screen. This is because each player is given their own camera view. You can LAN together two Wii Us each with a copy of the game to play in 60 fps locally though, and the online runs at 60 fps as well. In any case, when playing with friends, the 30 fps isn't that noticeable or a big deal. The online play works well and it's quick to find a match.

Pokken Tournament is a fun and interesting 2d/3d two player fighting game. Pokken features many of popular Pokemon in it. The graphics look great in the single player mode but can take a dip in local co-op. The tutorial does a really good job explaining the finer points of the game. The online play works very well. Pokken Tournament is a fun simple fighting game for the wii u.

I've never been the biggest fan of fighting games, but I'm a big fan of Pokémon. First off, the game is gorgeous. It's awesome seeing the Pokémon you know and love in a way you never have been able to before. I only wish the roster was much larger. While you can unlock more support characters to use, what you see for your main choices are what you get. It's honestly kind of lackluster and my one complaint with the game. The combat is extremely fun as it goes from a 3d fighting game like Naruto to a 2d one like Street Fighter all dependent on attacking your opponent a particular way or doing enough damage. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase. Even if you aren't the biggest fan of fighting games, this one can be a lot of fun, even if it's just to see some of your favorite Pokémon in a whole new light.

A fighting game based on Pokemon, something you'd never think Nintendo would release is finally real. The game looks great graphically. Maybe a little confusing with the controls at the beginning(as someone not into fighting games much) but once you've practiced and played a bit, it'll become easier.

If you like Pokémon or Tekken then you’ll like this hybrid. It’s a new battle style but if you’ve played fighting games you’ll pick up quickly. If not there is a training mode which is easier than most fighting games. It feels like Tekken and Super Smash combined. Two thumbs up!!

Had a lot of fun playing this game, the controls are simple enough and the tutorials are well designed. The problem for me lies in execution of the games controls. Its the very definition of easy to learn hard to master in my opinion. the fighting is deep enough to be very rewarding, a button masher this is not, but the difficulty spikes can be very frustrating if you havent mastered it. One other thing htat bothered me was the wierd texture choices when they modeled the pokemon. Most of them look fuzzy when they have 0 fur (charizard and gengar) I still look forward to the competitive scene for this game, i just hope i can get good enough to be relevant

Pokken Tournament is not your typical Pokemon game, since it was developed with the Tekken producers. The fighting style is very easy to get used to, and the graphics are beautiful. The single player campaign is fun but the multiplayer keeps the game fresh.

It seems to have great single player mode, as well as "dual player mode" (my husband and I like to battle each other!) It is really neat to "battle" your Pokemon like they do in the anime. The graphics are great and it is fun all around, for two-person fighter fans and Pokemon fans alike. It would be great for younger players or those with less video game skills, as the controls are easy and in-game instructions are thorough. However, it is also fun for those of us who play games often as there is a lot of room for improvement/fun at more difficult levels. Highly recommend!!
