With special effects light years ahead of the 1982 movie it's based on this could have been a chilling thrill ride but clearly this was not set up to be nearly as frightening as the original. Plenty of satire and jokes throughout prevent the movie from ever establishing a mood of foreboding and unease which was a bit disappointing as I was expecting more of a psychological thriller and scare fest like the movies namesake. I do like the update in technology to drones flying through the netherworld with elements of the stereotypical ghost hunting equipment being used to analyze the paranormal occurences as in many "ghost hunter" style shows popular today. The 3d was underutilized and didn't really add much to the film in my opinion. Final verdict: if you want a scary movie, watch the original but if you want a lighter mood with modern day special effects and mannerisms; this movie isn't bad.

So I was skeptical because the original is one of my favorite movies of all time. After seeing the previews though i was kind of intrigued. When I was going to watch it i kept an open mind to base what i thought on it being its own movie. Does it have the heart of the original ? No. But it doesnt try to be the original and it works. The 3-d really draws you into the movie and I think really helps set the movie apart. Not a bad movie.

The original Poltergeist is one of my favorite movies because I thought that it mixed humor with some scary parts, a good story, some pretty good special effects , and a great musical score by Jerry Goldsmith. I saw the original Poltergeist in a packed theater where everyone seemed to be laughing and screaming and enjoying the movie. When we saw the remake in the theater, there was only one other person in the audience and he kept talking to himself. I liked this movie more than I thought I would. I liked how the story was similar but not the same. I liked the family as much as I liked the family in the original and the differences between the two families are interesting. I feel that the original is much better, but I have watched this newer version more than once and I actually liked it better the second time.

I didn't dislike this film and, on it's own, it might have been held with higher regard. The original Poltergiest was my first foray into horror and as a 9 year old. I had many a rough night after watching it (my adult fear of clowns and creepy trees is solely due to seeing the original before turning 10). The adult characters, though acted well enough, just don't generate the same sympathy as Craig T Nelson and Jobeth Williams did in the original. I feel like the kids are just running through the motions in most scenes. I generally felt the terror that the original family and the investigators felt in the 80s version. The remake is not nearly as bad as I expected, but it's just missing something that original captured. Worth checking out, just don't expect the same movie as the original.

Yes for you new kids on the block my summary will mean nothing. For those of you who saw the original in the theatre. ..keep reading. .. I decided when I saw this remake on blu ray at such a low price that I would hate myself for not getting it and trying to watch it with an open mind. I read the slanted critic reviews and decided that the children that give such reviews are not to be trusted, what with there fresh out of college big words that don't translate into a real review only showing that they know how to use a thesaurus as well as trying to show off those big words and trash an otherwise good, fun, jump scare movie for the sake of their careers ( sorry I digress..ie big word lol). I watched this movie in the words of captain kirk. ."young minds, new ideas" and I didn't look for anything else. They took a premise from the 80s and made it their own with their own spin. Sure there were a few knods to the first which I found funny but as a whole I feel the director took this and put a new spin on it. It was fun and very entertaining and I would highly recommend it to any of my peers. So like I said "don't knock it till you've tried it"

Though it is not as good as the original film, Poltergeist is not a bad film in its own right. The Blu Ray combo pack was a great value for the price. I was a little put off that the cardboard sleeve was damaged and even though it was the last copy in the store the manager said "no damage was done to the disc so we will not do a discount." At any rate still a value.

Not quite as good as the original in my opinion. But the special effects was much better than the original. Do to the fact that I have the 3D format, made it even more entertaining. All fans of the original, should see this movie! Weather 3D or 2D!

It's hard to follow a classic like the poltergeist movie that originally hit the big screen. This version is not bad at all and updates with technology made the scenes really come to life. If you have watched the original this I still a new movie for sure. There is very little that is the same so your heart rate can still get going

I love the steelbook but I jumped the Gun with buying this one. I thought it was the original and not the remake. I've never seen the remake so I'm glad I can watch something new but I really wanted to watch the original hahahaha.

I am generally not a fan of remakes, or even the idea of remakes, so going into this my positive reception to this even existing as a movie was tenuous at best. ...then i watched it... and wow... I know many of my fellow horror fiends didnt like the movie due to, what i found to be ridiculously stupid reasons (such as changing the name of characters?! REALLY?! who cares!) - the movie was absolutely incredible, and dare i say it, holds up STRONG to the original movie. The story line is great, the effects are incredible, especially in 3D - i havent watched the directors cut/extended edition (i wish THAT was in 3D) but the theatrical version was amazing and ill be re-watching it over and over as time goes on. dont listen to the naysayers, this movie is amazing and stands up strong to the original. though they do vary, as they should, I like this movie as much as i like the original, and i LOVE the original. worth getting! go get it!

Surprised a little in that I enjoyed this remake. The "scares" might escalate too quickly after movies like The Conjuring and the like, but it is still solid. Some of the effects are too hokey (the tree, that's never going to look right). Rockwell and DeWitt bring at least better than average performances. I think for a lot of people, the enjoyment of the movie will come down to how much they buy Kyle Catlett's performance. Luckily for myself, I did buy it. Basically the main character, the young actor gives a very solid performance, and most importantly, doesn't capsize the movie, which could have easily happened.

Great movie, and a must have. Also the new case. I’m a sucker

Great 3D with depth and out of the screen effects.

After seeing this film, it reminded me more of other modern films, but not so much the old Poltergeist film. It had a few easter eggs from the old film, but had some changes. The CGI kind of made it more cheezy and less of a drama. Overall, it was fun to watch and good effects. I give it an 8 out of 10.

I watched the original at a time in my life where it made a big impression - helped me become of a lover of the genre. I watch it now and its kind of hokey, but I personally think it is better than the updated remake. This version does a good job of refactoring the story to the "modern age" and the visuals are fantastic. I was still scared because it IS scary - there were just enough differences that while predictable, it still made my heart race. Maybe I would have liked it more if I had never watched the original - but it is just too hard for me to not compare them.

Ok this doesn't happen very often some of the recent remakes have been really bad but not this scary creepy shocker. OMG it was awesome and the 3D was all up in your mug. You gotta see this and I'm saving the unrated bonus disc for Halloween night but see the 3D if you can its great.
