Review of 4K Ultra HD Steelbook

Having not seen this movie in a theatre and being an ardent fan of Steven Spielberg, I was anxious for the blu-ray release of his latest film. I was not disappointed in the slightest. It is a seamless and well proportioned blend of live action and CG and the sound editing is flawless. The sound effects and Silvestri soundtrack were restrained as to not overpower the movie’s visuals and story telling, but richly layered to enhance the watching experience.
The steelbook version contains both 4K Ultra HD and blu-ray discs (stacked - I prefer that the discs are located on either side of the case - see photo). It also included digital copy (more on that later). I watched the 4K version and the visual quality is superb with English Dolby Atmos and English DTS HD Master along with a plethora of additional languages and descriptive audio for the hearing impaired. As is typical, special features (of which there are approx. 97 min.) are located on the blu-ray disk. There are no commentary tracks.
Upon registering the disc through Vudu, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the digital copy included the featurettes contained on the blu-ray disc. Vudu included (7) featurettes. In addition to the featurettes, Movies Anywhere and iTunes also included “Trivia” (20 still panels of misc. information) and a photo gallery. Amazon Prime does not include any extras.
Lastly, putting aside the high caliber of filmmaking and a captivating storyline (tip-of-the-hat to “Willy Wonka”) the numerous references to 1980’s arcade/video games, television, films and social cultural influences contained in the film will make this a movie that I will watch again and again. And without giving much away with a spoiler, the extended nod to Kubrick was simply put… extraordinary in it’s execution.

A fun look at virtual reality life while taking us back to everything that was awesome about 80's pop culture. A lot of fun. One movie with so many memories of why I fell in love with movies in the first place.

Ready Player One is a must to experience in 3D. It's too bad this wasn't offered in a 4k bundle or steelbook edition. The packaging could have been better for this edition. Pretty much a standard Blu-ray box, which is different from the box pictured on Best Buy (at least at the time of this writing). I have a 4k, but opted for the 3D edition because it is a better experience for me. Worth getting if you have a 3d display! Love the movie.

just like Tesla is changing the ways automobiles are made, Samsung is changing refrigerators.
Highlights:
-checking the inside of fridge to see if we need more milk is awesome.
-having ability to change freezer to fridge.
-the apps are great-weather, Pandora, recipes. Manynof the other ones I don’t think I’ll use.
-Great to be able to “personalize,” your fridge with family pictures.
-we can bribe the kids by saying,”you get to play with the fridge only if you help in the kitchen!:-)
What I don’t like:
-ice maker. Not enough!

I loved the fact that they used the Easter Egg plain. it is a little thing that is known only to those of us of older gaming world truly understand the meaning of the Easter eggs in games. Most of this newer generation needs that knowledge because finding them makes for a more enjoyable game play .

This movie surprised me. I was expecting it to be good, however, I wasn't expecting it to be great. It is an instant classic in my opinion. Probably due to all the nostalgia it brings.

One of Steven Spielberg's best. A convergence of the 80's and the future of Virtual Reality with a sprinkle of disco in the club.

This review is just for the Ready Player One [4K Ultra HD Blu-ray] case. The case is so thin and lightweight that it easily bends in your hands and both discs had come free during shipping. I ordered over 100 4k/blu-ray discs that i got today and this was the worst.
The cover photo is so dark its hard to view. I can recommend movie, but not the case.

I went into this movie expecting to be let down. Not that I set the bar low, there is a certain production value one expects from a Steven Spielberg project but, as a big fan of the book, I knew that there was no way they could cram the whole story into one two hour and twenty-minute movie. BUT if there was one man out there that would be able to get it right AND be able to gather the insane amount of intellectual properties to pull it off (because he is associated with a major amount of them) it's Spielberg.
The story is set in the near future, humanity has continued on our path of self-destruction and the world is going down the tubes. Most people now live in the virtual world of the Oasis. The creator of this world, James Halliday, has died and left his legacy – the Oasis – to the first player that can complete a series of challenges that he had set up before his death. Naturally there is an evil internet corporation that is throwing everything they have into solving the clues in order to gain control of the Oasis and monetize it for everything it is worth. It’s up to Parzival and the friends he makes along the way to beat the evil corporation and save the digital world.
So, this movie is not the book. BUT luckily it doesn’t try to be. A good adaptation doesn’t have to be exactly the same as the source material, in fact, sometimes it’s better for it. Let’s take Jurassic Park for example, if you have ever read the book you’ll find that it is way WAY different than the movie that everybody knows and loves. Both versions can exist and be good because people took the time to reimagine it. Like Jurassic Park Spielberg has worked with the author (Michael Crichton helped with the JP adaptation) to reimagine his world to make it more screen friendly and I think they pulled it off nicely.
Was there anything wrong with the movie? Yeah, I had some minor issues, the love story was accelerated to the point where you’re like: Yeah guys, it’s only been like a week and you’re madly in love *eyeroll*. And I thought I-Rok was a little more goofy than his character should have been- if you’ve read the book I-Rok as you know him is no more, he’s a ultra-buffed player killer in the Oasis—honestly kind of an improvement as his character was pretty pointless in the book anyway. But the overall tone of the film was kind of playful – there was a few times where my internal monologue went *Womp womp* at whatever had just happened – but I feel like they were trying to keep the tone of the movie light so I’m letting it slide.
My theater audience was really into it, people yelling and cheering at various points, one lady started clapping after the initial race scene. Overall a great movie going experience. And with no physical constraints – all the Oasis stuff is CG – Spielberg and his cinematographer Janusz Kaminski really went to town with the camera work. I can’t wait to go back and see this thing in 3-D because it looks like it will be a crazy ride. But at this point these guys are masters of plotting camera movement and it shows.
To wrap up, if you can divorce yourself from the source material (or if you’ve never read the book) you should enjoy this one.

When books are adapted into movies, I think it's best to look at them as two separate works of art rather than comparing them. It's very difficult to translate one art form into another without making changes. Most novels of any length would require a movie of several hours for a literal transfer.
Ready Player One's movie version has the same basic premise, same characters, and to my surprise, the same messages. Having Ernest Cline cowrite the script was definitely a good move in that regard, a way to preserve the essence of the book in the midst of a remarkable number of changes. Major events in the book are often omitted from the movie. New events are added, and order of events is often different. Despite that, I had a lot of the same reactions to the movie as I did to the book.
The movie is a visual feast, but it also does a great job of addressing issues like the danger posed by corporate greed and the need for balance in one's life.
The movie appeals to the nerd in all of us in much the same way the book did, though interestingly a lot of the pop culture references have been swapped for others, I assume in some cases because of rights issues.
The relationship between Wade and Samantha is well handled. There is also an implicit comment on the problems of relationships that exist only online.
