I had some problems with Roku 4 about playing videos with subtitles. I opened a case in the Roku's support more than 3 weeks ago, and until now, I didn't receive an answers. The chat support is also very bad, and the people that work there didn't know about technology and how a video streaming works or even the codecs or subtitles.

I needed a 4K streaming device and having used android TV and the older LG Smart TV UI i found out that even though the UI on Roku is outdated (u guys need to hire a younger UI Design Engineer, no offense to anyone) it is still way stable than the other platforms.
I do have to say though that I bought the first device from Best Buy and it had heating and fan noise issues so Roku did end up sending a second unit which had a horrible fan noise, like something was obstructing the free flow of the fan blades, this obviously resulted in another RMA, received the unit yesterday and it has a slight noise but it is bearable.
My observations,
1st unit: Streaming 4k Netflix takes a toll and the fan just starts to go outta control, it doesn't seem to have the problem when streaming, Fraiser from Amazon which I believe is either SD or HD.
2nd unit: Initial plugin without registering the product itself was way to noisy
3rd unit: Has a constant sound but bearable, going to test it for 1 more day.
All units though heat up and the only exception was the first unit which was around 85 at one time.
Something that I did notice is that to reach the support team it takes quiet a while that I hope that they fix atleast during an new product release.
Suggestions
- The buttons on the remote for each channel needs to be configurable
- UI is long pending a change
- Faster customer support especially for people who pay full retail initially that need product support
- I would really love it if they had an option like Xbox to snap (PIP) to the side that also helps me choose which windows should give out audio. I know that there are apps like TWC but it doesn't stream all, I prefer having an HDMI in or even if Roku had an second product that would act as a cable box so that I wouldn't have to Pay TWC a ridiculous ~$12 every month for a HD box that probably cost $30 that has a terrible UI. Imaging having a guide in 480p format on a 4K TV.
- Have a look at the gaming laptop that Asus had come out with, i believe it was the Asus GS51 something.. They had two fans on the back pulling out heat towards the back that made no noise, till date that is the only product that I know that doesn't heat up as much as it should and the best part for a gaming laptop you would expect the fans to make a lot of noise but it was super quiet/bearable quiet.
- Whats with the micro SD option, I believe everyone would still prefer the USB 3.0 or people like me since SSD are getting cheaper had a slot to pop one in.

There is nothing that Roku didn't think of with this set top media player except an easy to use power button to turn it off. :-) The remote works great for playing back audio when you insert headphones, the quality of video playback is spot on, and we have never had a video playback hiccup or lag. We had another older set top media player that went on the fritz. I would warn everyone that these do get hot and I recommend just keeping them unplugged when not in use, less you want your cat warming its bum on it.

I love Roku, I have had one of the first couple models ever made and a few in between, I purchased this on the release date and happy with the development. The remote control finder button is priceless and happy with the speed of the device.
Down to the problems....
1. The Sling TV app is horrible, Sling officially states that it is not yet compatible with the Roku 4 (however they have their own dedicated button on the remote) no problems exist on Roku 3, but horrible buffering and lag and errors on Roku 4, it is not an uncommon problem.
2. There is a dedicated button on the remote for Rdio, however Rdio just filed bankruptcy and there is no way to change this buttons feature, so now I have a useless button on the remote.
3. There is a fan in this model. Several people have complained about this making tons of noise which Roku claims is a manufacturing defect, but I don't see why it affects some and not others. The Roku 3 and many other Roku's before it had NO FAN and work perfectly fine. The Roku 4 does get hot unlike the Roku 3 ( I don't suggest putting it in a tight confined space, as it may shorten the life of the device)
All in all, if you don't absolutely need 4k, I suggest you stick with the Roku 3 which is rock solid, and cheaper. Just let the company work out these issues and soon an amazing 4k device will be ready for primetime.

The Roku 4 is my first device from Roku. I also have a 1st generation Apple TV. There is no comparison. The Roku is lightning fast and is plain fun to tinker with. I like the voice search using the remote. It seems only to apply from the main page. I wish that worked within individual channels such as YouTube. I don't have a loud fan noise as some report. But I have not used the optional setting to run the fan either. I enjoy being able to customize the channels I want on my Home page. I wish there was an internet browser channel available. But it's probably faster just to mirror my iPad and use Safari to type and browse. The earphone/headphone in the remote is nice, but seems to get a little staticky at the outer range of the remote. Otherwise, I like it, but haven't used it much. Picture quality is outstanding on my HD TV. If you're thinking about getting a Roku 3, don't pass Go, don't collect $200. Pay the extra and get the Roku 4. You won't look back.

The main reason I get this unit is because I need the optical digital output to feed it into my old surround sound processor that does not have HDMI. Now, my initial thought about the unit itself. t's easy to set it up. All I have to do is following the on screen instructions and within 10 minutes I can watch Netflix. I have not tested the voice function, so i can't comment on it, however I do not have success with listening to audio through the headphone plugged into the remote control. Don't know why but the sound is being cut every few seconds, and when i can hear, the sound is rather stuffy as if sound transmitting is not at all working. Other than that, the unit, although being somewhat warmer and a bit noisier than I would like, does not bother me, really. I am happy with the unit and would recommend it to anyone who does not yet have one.

I read many of the early negative reviews about the fan noise and heat generated by the Roku4. I can say that I have bought two of these and neither one had an issue with fan noise. They do run hot, especially if you're streaming 4k. I initially had mine resting on carpet and that was a mistake. It would freeze up. I ended up mounting that one vertically with both sides open to the air and have had no issues. The other one sits horizontally but sits on two rests so that the bottom is open to the air. I have had no heat issues since.
The unit has performed exactly as advertised. The biggest problem is deciding which of the many channels you want. I think there are close to 3,000 of them. I bought this as a way to get 4k content and it has not disappointed. There is not an overwhelming amount of 4k content, yet, but there are plenty of movies and documentaries. My one installation has an internet download speed of 35 mbps and runs fine. The other is 170mbps so... I have both units hard wired to avoid overwhelming my wireless units.
The search ability was a selling point for me. It allows you to search ALL content for an actor, director, title, etc. It shows you every service offering a given title and what the price is for each. The remote has a microphone and you can use voice to enter a search term. It is not Siri, but I don't miss that. You can also type in a search.
One surprise: my one installation can handle Dolby Atmos which is incredible. The Roku does not claim to be able to download Atmos, but it does! I have only done it through Vudu both with the Atmos demo there and on the Mad Max Fury road sound track. The receiver definitely indicates that it is decoding Atmos and, particularly on the demo, you cannot mistake it. Haven't tried it on Netflix or other channels, but it doesn't work on Youtube. Go figure. I asked customer service about and was told they don't support it period. But VUDU does.
Customer support: this has been an incredible disappointment. Thank goodness the product is good enough I haven't needed it. Just asking the question about decoding Atmos was very frustrating. If it's not in their response book, they don't have a clue. And the book does not appear to be that thick. I called them twice and was ready to puind my head on the desk both times. When will companies learn that putting your customer service off-shore where English is a second language is a sure fire way to annoy your customers. Cutting corners here is a huge mistake.
That is my one complaint and it's not enough to lower a five star rating. I tell everyone about the Roku and encourage them to get one.

Coming from the Roku 3 this unit is much faster. I love the sleep/power off after 30mins not being in use. I'm currently using the 5ghz and it streams perfectly. I don't personally own a 4K tv yet but I've given a roku 4 to a friend that has a 4K tv and the looks amazing. Netflix looks great so does Youtube 4k videos. Netflix, Amazon and other streaming services are still limited on their 4K content. I would recommend anyone to get the roku 4.

I'm not sure why my original review didn't show up with my BB account info, but so I get the points on my account I'll post it again.
I'm sure my requirements are different from most, but we all have our requirements. I needed the following:
Optical out - I have an older (ok it's old) Pioneer Elite receiver that only has optical in (no HDMI). I can't justify replacing as it sounds great. When I replace it, I'll buy another Pioneer Elite.
Must have apps for Sling, Tablo (OTA DVR) and Amazon Prime - we use these primarily. We don't use Netflix.
IR Remote - I use a Harmony remote to turn on my "home theater". I use the term home theater loosely, as it's our primary/only viewing source. I hate having multiple remote controls to turn devices on/off and support different functions.
It must be EASY to use - for my wife and for people who come visit. I can deal with quirky electronics (although as I age, my acceptance for this is dwindling), but explaining to others why things do/don't work is annoying.
So...I have a Roku 4. It checked all the boxes. I've been fortunate and haven't had some of the issues that others have had. I have had some quirks, but it's technology. Setup was easy. Adding channels is easy. Navigation is easy.
If I had to do it again, I'd probably go with a new AppleTV as it fits well into my Mac and iOS world, but them I'd also have to upgrade my receiver AND Amazon wasn't supported AND there still isn't a Tablo app for tvOS.

Works very well over Wireless AC network, and has a gigabit ethernet interface (which I would recommend using if you can for maximum home network stability). The interface is very easy to navigate, and very responsive as well. I haven't had a chance to try out the 4K, but will certainly do once I get a 4K TV.
The remote is very nice as well, and it has built in speaker for locating it. Alternatively, you can use your smartphone/tablet to control the box.

Great choice if you're considering cutting the cord. Has all the services needed expect iTunes of course. Has Sling Tv which is only available on a few devices; this is one of them. Very fast and easy to use. Voice search is fun to use. I love being able to keep a external hard drive plugged in to view additional media.

I've been using Roku devices since the Roku 2. I also have a Roku 3 and a Roku TV. If you're used to previous Roku devices the first thing you will notice is the size! The Roku 4 has a much larger footprint and overall seems a lot more hefty than previous models. Considering the price, this seems a lot more high quality. Another difference you may notice between previous Roku devices is that the Roku 4 actually hibernates. After a certain amount of inactivity the screen saver itself turns off and any output to the screen stops. A simple push of a button and its back on the home screen. The Roku experience on this device is pretty much the same as the Roku 3 with the added benefit of 4k resolution (if your TV can handle it) and the latest in WiFi technology. Great product with content selections that can't be beat!

For the most part, I like the Roku 4, it's easy to setup, easy to use and has a lot of channels to help cutting cable. My biggest gripe is that it seems to become unresponsive quite often requiring us to power fail the device. I honestly think that once Amazon and Google are done with their little temper tantrums with each other and Amazon Prime is available on the Nvidia Shield, we'll be getting 3 of those to replace the Roku's and even our HTPC's (we use the HTPC with Kodi and Kodi is not available on the Roku but is available on the Shield). The price difference makes this a no-brainer over the Shield when we decided to cut cable as we needed 3 of these, antenna, cable amp and two tuners, cable, etc. If you are just cutting cable, this is a great choice due to the features and price.

I have owned several Roku models and this one ranks right up with the Roku 3. Even better even. The menu is the same, which is no surprise as Roku standardizes everything across the platforms. But everything runs faster and smoother. A couple pointers. No, the fan is not really that loud. I have it with my stereo, xbox one, dish receiver, etc. I do not notice it over the usual hum of electronics. Also, be sure to upgrade your HDMI cable to one that can handle the 4k. If you use a stereo in the loop, as I do, the stereo needs to be 4k for pass through and the HDMI to the TV needs to be the newest standard as well.

This is a great device and it is so easy to setup. I love the fact that you can download all of your channels online and then have them show up on the device. Setup is a breeze and using the device is very intuitive. Remote control is well laid out and even though I haven't used it yet, I love the fact that I can plug in headphones to the remote and listen to what is playing on the TV. I would recommend this device because it has access to so many different channels and it is content neutral (unlike Apple, Amazon, etc.).
