The price may be high but it is part and parcel in step with the PC SSD market. You’ll be glad you added the space.

1TB NVMe SSD expansion for Xbox Series X

Even though this NVMe SSD is priced at about double the price of a 1TB SATA SSD, the enhancement, ease of installation and configuration are mostly worth it. I think the performance enhancement between NVMe and SATA/USB3 connectivity makes this worthwhile. Don't get me wrong, a 1TB external SATA SSD would work just fine, so this is more a personal and convenience difference.
