I purchased this receiver to replace an older high end unit in need of repair. I decided to go new because receiver tech. is leaps ahead of my decade old Integra. Multiple HDMI inputs, 4K pass through, wi-fi, bluetooth etc. Make this receiver ready for today and the future. The sound quality is remarkable and the set up was very user friendly. My only disappointment (and its a big one) is the fact that the dedicated zone 2 out, for my second amp and speakers, will not work with any of the HDMI inputs, only analog. So if I want to listen to music on my deck I am limited to FM or DVR. I would recommend this receiver to anyone who doesn't find zone 2 important.

Bought this to replace a dead receiver. I love the 4K inputs, the Airplay/Bluetooth audio connectivity to my devices (Mac, iPhone, iPad), and, of course, its WiFi connectivity. Wireless headphones connect like a charm. It's missing support for the latest Dolby technology (Atmos), but for my large speaker 5.1 setup, it's perfect and all encompassing, with plenty of power to spare. Oh, and I especially like the setup and options presented on the TV screen...makes adjusting settings so easy vs. the old Sony receiver that just died. Hope to have this workhorse for a long time...

I had an outdated Pioneer receiver and it finally died. This was a blessing in disguise as I would not spend the money on a new receiver when I had a working one. When I researched the current AV systems I saw that they had a lot more to offer these days with a lot more control and configuration combinations. In my opinion from the specs and reviews, this Sony system was the best bang for the buck if not buying the most intricate, state of the art system with all the options you could desire but probably not use. I am more than satisfied with this system and wish I had bought it sooner. The sound level and quality is amazing, user-friendly, and there are many configurable options. Highly recommended for an intermediate system at a great price.

I've only used it for a couple of days so far and the verdict is........ I like it, a lot! The setup was extremely simple, the user interface is appealing and friendly also. In terms of sound, it is much nicer than my previous receiver, and you can't beat having AirPlay built in! I would definitely recommend this for others!

I don't think there's a better AVR for $400

Pros: Sound! I'm blown away by the sound of this AVR after calibration. Initially I wasn't too impressed after taking back my $800 on sale Denon AVR X3300. After configuration I have to say this is the best receiver I've heard for under $1000, yet alone $400. After configuration be prepared to hear all the thumps, and clean separation between the audio channels. Playing FF 15 on the PS4 Pro, Call of Duty IW, and The last of Us was a delight to my ears. Much better than the $800 Denon X3300, but seemingly fell short of the Onkyo 757 in the sound department.
Cons: Setup, while setup is easy, auto calibration sound output is relatively low. I had to turn all speakers volume up to ten instead of the default 0. I also recommend turning on auto volume, and keeping the sound field in pure direct. My 2nd issue is some of the sound filters or applications has become utterly useless. Enhanced music mode I had to turn the volume up to 25 instead of 10. Last issue is blue tooth, my phone simply will not pair with this device, same with my tablet. It's not a big deal because of my music is also on my NAS which the receiver connected wonderfully. I didn't knock a star off because most issues were corrected within ten minutes except blue tooth which actually could be my device as well.
Conclusion: For the price I think this is the best receiver, but if you have $200 more go with the Onkyro 757. I had the Onkyro for a week, and generally was impressed, but my unit started having power problems. I picked the Denon AVR X3300 and was not impressed at all, maybe for $300, but surely not $800, yet alone $1000. I was going back to Onkyo before I spotted the Sony 1070 on sale for $400, I'm currently satisfied, this unit is a keeper.

I purchased the SONY STRDN1070 7.2CH 4K AV RECEIVER after my Onkyo TX-NR808 stopped working. We have a whole house audio system requiring multiple zones among other things. The audio quality is a tremendous jump up from the Onkyo as technology has come a long way in a relatively short period of time. We have a 5.1 surround set-up using M&K speakers. Overall set-up was a breeze except for setting up the second zone. It was a challenge to figure out how to set the volume level for the second zone and the technicians from Sony could not help either. Once we figured it out it was a pretty easy setup. The remote is pretty basic which is nice. Not back-lit, of course. VERY functional remote. Would have given it a 5 star rating but I had to return the unit to BB 28 days after buying it. The second zone stopped working and the remote would not work and the input knob would not work. Thank goodness it happened before 30 days because I did not purchase extended warranty from BB. Their exchange policy is HORRIBLE!!!! Problem occurs after 30 days and you are SOL at BB. I exchanged it for the same unit and purchased the 4 year protection plan at BB. Purchased it around Thanksgiving so the price was $160 less than it is now. Like CNET said this is a terrific product with a greater value than more expensive units. BB reviews confirmed what I had learned on CNET.

Very good sound quality, great OSD, lots of sound options and input selection, all HDMI inputs 4K and 2.2 compliant. Only problem I've had is with the CATV pass through. Every once in a while when turning on the cable box and TV (receiver turned off) the TV will say HDMI cable not connected and so no picture or sound. Need to turn on receiver and cycle through the HDMI outputs and then it will send signal to TV. You DO NEED to have the receiver set to CATV when you turn it off (if cable connected to that input) no matter if pass through is set to ON or Auto, in order for it to pass through to work at all. therefore only 4 stars, otherwise it would definently be a 5 Star rating.

Wanted to replace an older receiver with newer model. Features are wonderful, and easy to set up. You can make custom adjustments easily or use the included the east set up microphone. The on screen display is easy to navigate through for custom settings. Sound quality is very good, paired with the correct speakers. Nice deep bass, and crisp clear highs. The remote is also very user friendly and straightforward. Once paired with your Bluetooth devices it even makes it a better. Also airplay feature is a nice feature with on screen display.

Hooking up the speakers, TV and DVD player was easy. Getting the right sound for what you are listening to can be a chore. If everything is set right you will get fantastic sounds. The front panel read out is extremely hard to see. You may have to get out a telescope to see. Directions, functions of settings in the manual need to be vastly improved! This seems to be the weakest part of the amp.

This sony str-dn1070 receiver is an excellent performing sound machine that operates all of its functions perfectly and sounds great!!
the wireless music from iTunes on my pc transferred & performed smoothly and without a glitch
I did have a little trouble getting used to the on screen menu but I chalk that up to them not including a complete operators manual like the good ole days, every operation and sound field of this amp is able to be downloaded from their website but I am old school and prefer to have it in a manual to start with

I have a Sony HD TV I bought back in 2009 from Best Buy and the promo at the time was to get a free home theater system to go with the TV. I loved the system because even in a smaller room, and with the budgetary constraints I still had an awesome experience every time I used it.
Fast forward to 2016, and my Sony TV is still going strong, but my home theater system died. I tried a few other Sony models before settling on this model. I have thoroughly enjoyed many of the features of this system, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
1. Airplay - Airplay is Apple's proprietary screen mirroring technology. The receiver is Airplay capable, however, buyer be ware, you are not going to get Video Airplay functionality. Sony does not license that feature (not sure if other brands do) so unless you have an Apple TV, I do not believe you will be able to avoid also purchasing an Apple TV to do full screen mirroring of your Macs, or iOS devices. Also keep in mind the requirements for Airplay Screen mirroring, you need to have a Mac that is newer than 2011 I believe. Most Macs in the wild fit that category, but there are a few of us who have older Macs and the screen mirroring is not going to happen simply because the video cards in the older Macs were not meant for the load intensive activities you see in today's devices. My '09 Macbook Pro was just one of those cases. Trying to connect my Macbook Pro to the home theater system was a challenge, and the resolution was a pain to get right. If screen mirroring is something you are looking to have, save yourself the despair, and upgrade your Mac
2. The alternatives for screen mirroring technologies are Chromecast, and Miracast. The beauty of this receiver is Chromecast. Like many others, I plunked down for a Chromecast, and was hopeful I'd be able to do screen mirroring with it. My old home theater system was released prior to Chromecast, so the technology was simply not available.Given my '09 Macbook Pro was my workhorse, I used Chrome to do screen mirroring. My Macbook Pro was too old to be able to carry that load so Chromecast was painful and would disconnect, have latency issues, etc. I have not had a PC in many years so I cannot speak to Miracasting, but I do have an Android tablet which has Chromecasting abilities. This receiver is AWESOME for Android tablet screen mirroring. I find it is just as stable as a newer Mac connecting to an Apple TV. Definitely a way to go.
3. Sound Effects/Fields are interesting because of the potential for having those environments change the sound of what you are watching. I am not exactly a big fan of watching or listening to content using the sound effects or sound fields that a lot of devices offer. This is no different with this receiver, and often times I find it takes a bit of adjusting to get it right. I am trying to relax and enjoy myself, and the thought of having to try different sound fields before I get to enjoy a movie, show, event, etc, gets old and I find if you leave it on your basic non-filtered sounds, you don't always get a great experience so you're often times forced to try things out, and I find I settle on a setting in the end. This is further challenged by the fact that this is a receiver which is capable of 7.2, and I have a 5.1 system. One thing Sony does which is good though is they sell the receiver with a microphone to help calibrate the sound field in your environment. I have used this feature a few times even after setting it up the first time. The reason being you can adjust the size, distance, and volume of each speaker. Sony also has some other features on the audio side like Pure Direct, Sound Optimizer, etc. I have played with these some, but again, I bought this system to enjoy it, not make another chore of it. Perhaps if I had Geek Squad set it up, I might have a different experience on the sound side of things, but it is what it is and I have found settings that work for me.
4. HDMI Connect/Bravia Sync/HDMI CEC - These are all the same thing which means you can have your Sony receiver control other items in your environment which have one of those HDMI related services available. This can be a great feature because you can eliminate the clutter of other remotes. Whenever I used Bravia Sync, it would work for some items, but not for others. One particular issue is if I used Bravia Sync and screen mirroring to my Apple TV, I would get audio through the receiver which showed a visualizer screen indicating track number, artist, time, etc, but the Video content was on a different channel altogether. I tried this many different ways and eventually realized I had more important things to do and gave up on it to some extent. Sony does have this iOS app called Songpal. It is a bit misleading because who would associate "Song" with video? Be that as it may, there are some features available which can be useful through the app. You can add certain 3rd party apps to Songpal and gain some new features like displaying lyrics for audio playback. Programming the HDMI Inputs and associated settings is available, but the UI is poor in my opinion. I say this because for something which is connected via HDMI, things like Game systems, or CD Players, etc, show up as either connected via co-axial, or digital SDIF/Toslink, etc. It is an HDMI device, you should be able to list it as such. This receiver does have (1) HDMI ARC channel which is nice because you can connect something up to the receiver like an HTPC, and have the audio play through the receiver without having to run an additional connection to your TV. With HDMI ARC, you connect the device via HDMI and the receiver splits the signal automatically sending the audio to the speakers and the video to your TV.
The remaining features are plentiful, and the receiver can run multiple speaker configurations spanning two rooms at the same time. I do not have a need for that nor tested it so I have no insights I can offer. The video upscaling is a great feature to have and this receiver in my experience has exceeded my expectations in that regard. I never thought an HD TV would have HD content that could be displayed better than HD. With all the 4k content the absence of a 4k TV could be a real downer, but the upscaling feature has been amazing. At times I have to stop and really look at the picture because for a TV this old, and with as many hours as I have used it, the picture still looks amazing to me, even in 3D. The receiver enhances the signal and to me makes it even better. So, if you're waiting till your 1080p HD TV fails before you upgrade, this receiver gives you a nice incremental improvement.
I think this is a great receiver for the price, and I have not regretted it. I just think there are some things to keep in mind which may or may not be an issue for you. It is definitely a Sony product, and it like all Sony products it can be great if they use industry standard features, or it can be a pain if they are using their own proprietary technology. I think all in all, it is great addition and you won't be sorry.

I upgraded my TV system to enjoy the full capabilities of the Samsung 4K 60” hanging in my family room. New cables to deliver top of the line resolution and audio sound. With the new Sony receiver if the program or movie has it within itself, my Sony receiver will deliver it. Very pleased with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone desiring true theater sound. Again, you have to start with the proper quality from your service provider, the proper updated cables, etc.. If it’s there this system will deliver.

While I've always been a Sony fan, I never liked their multi-channel receivers until recently. This unit sounds very good, better then a Yamaha AS-501 integrated amp which it replaced.
It has most of the features I want in a receiver. The user interface is well laid out and fairly easy to navigate once you figure out where everything is. I especially like how the front panel display can be completely turned off. My only complaint is there is not a button on the remote that can turn off the display, you have to do it on the unit itself but once you have your custom presets set it does it by memory.
Sadly, the owners manuals they include with these things these days does not tell you everything you need to know about this units features and how to operate it so you will have to go on Sony's website to learn more. a
The STR-DN1070 does not have the new Dolby Atmos, which is why I got it at such a good price so if you need that you will have to get the new STR-DN1080, otherwise both units appear to be identical in every way.

I was surprised to see that you can set this up via your tv screen. By having the HDMI line connected, you can use the screen to see all of your settings, making it much easier then previous somi receivers. Also the Wi-Fi is a good touch, allowing me to make this part of my DLNA Network. I appreciate the fact that this has both Arc, and CEC, allowing for full integration across devices that support both.

I do like this receiver. It powers my media room and the 2nd zone powers the customer speakers around the house and outdoors. Can get a little tricky with the sound type selected when watching movies and other features. Switches at times to certain speakers. My only drawback is the mobile app to control the receiver. It is not very user friendly and I have not established comfort with it just yet.

A couple of months ago I bought a pair of original drive-in movie speakers to polish up and display. After seeing how nice & shiny the aluminum castings were getting, I decided they should not only be seen, but be heard -- as side-surround speakers -- perfect!
My existing Sony amp was not up to the task, being a 5.1 model, but served well for 10+ years. THIS was the answer as a 7.2, which along with HDMI, wireless network connection, on-screen programming/setup, and all the other goodies introduced since 2007. Output is the expected Sony quality, and 40 watts/channel more than it's predecessor. My only riff on the thing would be the speaker terminals -- post & thumbscrew design -- was a bit of a chore getting some if the wires 'home'. I preferred my old unit's spring loaded lever & cram it in terminals.
Price was quite reasonable, as it was 'on-sale' when I went hunting for it.
