This game is boatloads of fun! Although it's still fairly new, the content that is given as of now is great with more to come in the future! If you are a third person shooter, paint and competitive kind of person AND own a Wii U, this is the game to get!

When Nintenfo first announced Splatoon, I didn't care. I was skeptical to say the least. How could they pull off a family friendly shooter game? Later though, I saw gameplay footage and I instantly got it. In the months prior to release, I found myself becoming increasingly hyped for the game and in the end was not disappointed. Sure, it's bright, colorful and not your average shooter, but that's what makes it so great. The game is crazy addictive, I have lost entires days into this game! I've been a Nintendo fan since the late 1980s and I can honestly tell you this is their best new IP in years. Now, I hope this review has helped, I'm going to get back into the game!

Splatoon takes an old idea and warps it into something new and fresh. I enjoy going around, spreading ink everywhere and chilling in the hub world, Inkopolis, as a squid. I say this game deserves to be a modern "classic" alongside the likes of Pikmin, Rhythm Heaven and Golden Sun. Maybe even a spot next to the old classics of Mario, Zelda and Metroid.

I can honesty say I have no problems with it at all. Simply a great game produced by Nintendo . I would totally recommend this to any shooter fan. Oh and BTW it beats COD by a long shot .

Splatoon is a fast-paced and fun shooter in which the characters shoot ink, not bullets. Gameplay takes place in several different modes, which I'll detail below. Online Turf War: The online modes are the meat of the game. In Turf War, players face off in two randomly assigned 4-player teams. Both teams have their own color ink. The goal is to mark as much territory in your team's ink as possible in three minutes. Online Splat Zone: This is one of the online Ranked modes, where you work to raise your rank from C- to A+ over the course of winning matches. The goal is to mark a certain area of a map with your team's ink and maintain control while a timer runs down. Single player: This is a quick and fun single-player mission which focuses on platforming. I didn't keep track of how long it took to complete this, but it didn't take more than a couple of hours. Offline two player match: One player uses the Wii U gamepad, the other plays on the television. I honestly haven't played this version completely. The frame rate and graphics quality takes a considerable hit, which was a bit of a turn-off for me. Amiibo Challenges: If you were lucky enough to grab one of the few sets of Splatoon Amiibo, you can play this mode to unlock new goodies and mini-games. As you play through single player mode, you'll unlock new stages to play here, which are basically stages from that mode with special rules applied depending on the Amiibo you scan. The girl and boy Amiibo challenges give you a specific weapon to clear the stage with. The squid Amiibo alternates between time-attack stages and stages in which you have a limited supply of ink. As a side note, while I was fortunate to find a three-pack of Splatoon Amiibo (thanks, Best Buy!), I wish Nintendo would release larger numbers of the Amiibo so more players can use this mode. The weapons, clothing, and minigames you unlock in this mode can't be obtained in the game any other way so far. It seems unfair to many people who buy the game that an entire mode is off-limits to them just because they weren't lucky enough to buy one of the few sets of Amiibo. Anyway, I digress. There are a few things that are really refreshing about Splatoon that make it so enjoyable for me. First of all, Nintendo is continuing to release new content for the game, free of charge. Just yesterday a new online ranked mode was released (Tower Control, which I haven't had the chance to play yet). There's at least one more new mode that will be released in the future, and new weapons come out regularly. Secondly, while you gain points by 'splatting' your opponents in the online modes, winning the online games require your team to fulfill other challenges. There isn't a stereotypical 'deathmatch' mode. Finally, I come to the controversial lack of voice chat. I actually really appreciate this aspect of the game. I've had too many experiences with other online games where the voice chat is used to just taunt and insult other players. Splatoon online matches are three minutes long in small arenas with clearly defined goals. I don't think they suffer too much from the lack of voice chat. All said, Splatoon is my new favorite game on the Wii U. I've already played for close to one hundred hours, and I still come back for more.

Splatoon does a lot of things right. The art style and presentation are top notch. Matchmaking is incredibly streamlined and you can be playing a match within seconds of booting the game. The rounds are short and sweet, with minimal downtime in between. Makes it a great game to pick up and play for short sessions. While the gameplay is fairly simple, there are a ton of different weapons and customizations to unlock that help keep the experience fresh. They are also adding new modes, maps and weapons at frequent intervals for no additional cost, which is nice. On the downside, there are only 2 game modes at the moment and only 2 maps per game mode are playable at a time, which rotate every 4 hours. This can result in playing the same map several times in a row, which can be a bit of a downer. Would have been nice to have all the maps included in the playlist since there aren't that many to begin with. Maybe this will happen eventually once they finish adding content to the game. With that said, Splatoon is one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had this year and a must own title for Wii U owners.

No doubt you've seen mixed reviews about the value of a game like Splatoon on a Nintendo platform. It's a different genre for them (an online-focused multiplayer "shooter"), a new IP, and like other games of this nature that have been released on other platforms (at least initially), it's lacking modes/features. Like most Nintendo games, it's incredibly polished with refined mechanics. Controls are simple, made even more simple with the motion control of the GamePad, and while there is a slight learning curve, after an hour or so with the game new players should feel competent enough to be competitive online. You level up and unlock new weapons with each level, and every day you can purchase new items for your head/body/feet, with each item also having different perks and leveling capabilities. New players level up quickly, and even though it can be tempting to use currency earned through playing on all of the weapons, the starting weapon is surprisingly well-balanced for any player. Unfortunately, there is no off TV play with this game, and that's one of the bigger disappointments for me. Online itself is a mixed bag. There's no voice chat, an oversight many will lament. It hasn't impacted me, but I can see why others are bothered by it. Most of the matches are smooth and lag-free, but there are times with lag creeps up, and over the first week or so, I have been disconnected from matches (as I would gather so have others with whom I am playing). This hasn't been a huge deal, and it happens with other online games as well, but why it matters is that all games are 4v4. In other words, if someone is disconnected from your team, 25% of your team is gone. On the plus side, even though you will most always lose these matches when they're 4v3, the matches (so far) are all only 3 minutes long. Currently, there are only two modes. Unranked and Ranked Turf Wars, with the goal being to cover as much horizontal ground in ink as you can in unranked, and control a certain section of the map over a period of time in ranked. Additionally, there are only six maps, with only two in play in both modes at any given time (with the maps being swapped around every 4 hours). This is kind of limiting, but it does help the players get used to the different maps, which I believe is the end goal of limiting the map pool. If you can break away from the frantic and fun online multiplayer, the single player campaign is a mix of platforming/shooting enemies, and offers a hopeful insight to future maps/content updates that are scheduled to roll out over the course of the summer. Despite any shortcomings the game has, Nintendo has shown a willingness to adjust and refine their titles even months after the initial release. As Splatoon is in the infancy of its lifespan (hopefully), many of the issues listed may eventually be patched out in the future. Whatever reservations I have about the state of the game at the moment, one thing is for certain: it's undeniably fun.

Great game for pickup and go, single player gaming

I'm in college full-time, so many of my RPG games, I don't play because they require too much thought, effort, strategy, and the games are quit long to complete a mission or a task. So, Splatoon as well as Hyrule Warriors have been my go to games. Splatoon games range from 3-5 minutes between regular/splatzone battles, and ranked battles (which has various modes, like a capture the flag like mode). One cool thing about splatoon is it's very personalizable. You can pick all your own gear. Each piece of gear has various effects that boost stats and effects. Splatoon allows you to have a full range of skin tones, which is relevant for me being African American and not always having a skin tone or a close skin tone when creating an avatar. In addition to weapons of fashion that have added bonuses, you have various types of wearons that fit to your playing style. Once you level up, you get access to more weapons, as well as gear. You're even given the option to test our each weapon, quickly after scrolling over it. Therefore, you're not wasting points buying weapons that aren't as effective or suitible for you as you thought. Splatoon is a game that I believe wasn't built fully upon release. There were very few options upon release. So the level of entertainment and gameplay has only really been reached and realized, months after release. Splatoon comes with a lot of free DLC, that will be given up until January 2016. DLC features new weapons, new gear (clothes, armor, fashion pieces, shoes, etc), new maps, and even new modes. So, my love for the game has grown upon release. There are always Splatfest that happens about once or twice a month, that are themed. You basically take a poll of a side, like cat vs dogs. And on a Saturday, you'll be on that time and will have a splatfest (which I believe are splatzone games), that ranks each member, and team, for an overall score. The side that wins get the most Super Sea Snails. You can use these snails to add a slot to your gear, or order items that you've pinned from people around the Splatoon city. There's also Amiibo support. This allows you to scan an Amiibo for single player missions that challenges you to do the story mode task with a particular weapon only, for exclusive gear and/or weapons. SIngle player mode was fun. I think it took me about 12-20 hours. But honestly, it was quite short, wish there was more to it. The golden core of this game is the online mode in the lobby, playing against other players worldwide. There is a two-player mode called Battle Dojo, but it sucks. For a game like this, using the Wiimote by itself, would've been perfect, especially with accessories lke the shooter accessory that you put your wiimote in. Either that, or with the nunchuck, or once again without it. Nintendo has seemed to drop the WiiMote functionality and controls in lots of games, sadly in the games that it would make most sense to use them in, like sports games, and shooting games like this. Additionally, you have no teams on Battle Dojo. It's just you vs. your friend in local player. It gets old very fast. There should have been 4 players or more, or 2-4 players and the rest an onine time, allowing you to have a local teammate and the rest online, or something of that stature. They could've also used the Octosquid girls as CPU teammates, as well, but they just said forget that. So the local player and single player/story are the weakest on the game. But it can be quite fun, especially if you want to jump into a game, and don't have to worry about not having time to get through anytime. I rate it about a B-.

People may say this game is lacking content at $60 but if you look at any other online game like CS:GO or League of Legends you'll know that in the long run, a small selection of maps/stages get played over and over. If the game is fun and keeps you coming back that's what matters. Anyway, this is a family-friendly shooter for all ages that allows you to contribute no matter how badly you are doing and Nintendo is slowly introducing more DLC through August for free (maps, weapons, gear). It has a single-player campaign that is about 6 - 10 hours long, a 1v1 local multiplayer option, and single-player online with teams of 4v4. The online has 2 modes: turf war (unranked) where you try to cover everything in your color and splat zones (ranked) which is essentially king of the hill. Both are tons of fun! However, there is no voice chat (doesn't matter to me), you can't change weapons between rounds - you have to drop the group, change your gear, and then rejoin matchmaking, and there's an annoying announcement every time you boot up the game or when maps cycle (every 4 hours) that you simply cannot skip. Oh yeah, can't forget the fact that group queue with friends will be introduced in August so for now you can join your friends' games but there's no guarantee you will be on the same team. Oh well. Overall, Splatoon gets 2 thumbs up and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Splatoon is an awesomely unique game. Its style, music, and gameplay are all refreshingly different, highly addictive, and tons of fun. For those who don't know, Splatoon is kind of an online shooter, but it's not about shooting other players. The goal is to claim as much ground as possible for you team, using everything from super soaker-esque guns to giant paint rollers or even just buckets. The pace of the game is very fast, but it's easy to get into. The controls, which use motion by default (you can change that if you want), are well-suited to the high speed action. They take a while to get used to, but when you get them, they're perfect. One complaint a lot of people had was the lack of voice chat. While I would have preferred friend-only voice chat as an option, I prefer none to the constant harassment often found in other online games. For anyone considering buying this for a family, it should be noted that it is primarily a one player per system game. While there is a small 2 player versus mode, that's as far as the local multiplayer goes.

Best third-person shooter from Nintendo. Basis of the game is that you are Squid Kid. Turn into a squid to reload your ink and swim through the ink. Be a kid to shoot and spread ink. Really simple concepts, but in depth strategy, equipment, and weapons. The weapons have a set loadout with have different pro/cons which really helps diversify what everyone is using. (Example: One weapon is really good at spreading ink, but not good at killing. Another is great for tracking people down.). Equipment has a main ability and up to 3 sub ability (can pay to upgrade everything to 3 sub abilities at level 20). The main ability is set, but the sub ability is randomly chosen. I suggest playing the single player to get a feel on how to control the character and the ending boss is amusing. Been playing it non-stop and highly recommend it to everyone.

This game is a little lacking in some areas: no voice chat, limited map usage (only 2 are used every hour and on rotation), no way to change loadouts between matches without leaving the lobby. However, the game is pure fun. Even though it's flawed, this is a truly unique "shooter" experience that no one can deliver like Nintendo does. I've had tons of fun with this game (hence the 4.0), but I can see why others might be deterred. Perhaps wait until August when the first "big" update comes. Note - the developers have promised to continue releasing content (maps, weapons, clothing, etc) consistently and continuously; so far they've delivered on that promise, already releasing two more weapons for free since the May 29 launch date. I'm having a blast playing this game! It is a different approach to a shooter, but it is quick and fun! The game did not launch with much, but they have continuously updated the game and now there are tons of weapons to unlock and use in battle. The single player was a lot of fun. You've got to play it just for the final boss battle. There is multiplayer but no voice chat or split-screen online. The split-screen is a bummer, but I'm okay with no voice chat because the matches are only 3 minutes long. Overall, it's a great game!

Splatoon is one of the best and newest games on the Nintendo Wii U. it is Nintendo's take on the shooter. It is a very colorful game where you shoot ink and attempt to cover the ground with your team's ink. Each match is 4 verses 4 online. There is no voice chat so parents don't need to worry about that. The game also features an awesome single player mode that will help you learn a lot of useful tricks. Splatoon also features a very good soundtrack and is a game that is full of life, I recommend it to pretty much anyone.

I love this game. There's plenty of weapons to choose from, content is being added every week, and the overall style of the game is very refreshing. The online play is very fun, but lag from playing with people overseas is a bit of drag at times. The single player is well designed and enjoyable although rather short. The local multiplayer is only 1vs1 and nowhere near as good as the online play. If you have a good internet connection, I think this is a must buy for the Wii U.

Splatoon in a shooter for the WiiU where you play as a squid-kid humanoid and use ink-based weapons to cover the ground. The game features an online mode where players compete to cover the most territory in a 4v4, and a single player campaign. The neat thing about this game, is that you transform between the kid and squid modes. As a kid you can use your ink to shoot territory your color, and in squid form, you can move through that ink much faster and replenish your ink supply. I'm writing this review 4 hours into the game (Level 6, first 6-7 weapons unlocked), and the online play is fantastic. The games are fast paced an strategic, which is something I feel the shooter genre has been lacking for awhile. The combination of being able to tilt the gamepad for slight camera changes alongside the right joystick to turn the entire pad makes for precise aiming; I've never seen anything quite like it. Overall there appears to be 20-ish different weapons, and I've enjoined every one I've tried out. There have been some people who have complained about lack of voice chat (The gamepad has a built in mic), but the game is simplistic enough with it's overall premise that this isn't necessary. There is a natural indication to work as a team when moving/defending that makes this point moot. The single player campaign focuses on a battle against the Octarians, who all look like a tentacle of an octopus. I've played the first 2 levels, and it's design reminds me of Super Mario Galaxy, in the sense that there are lots of floaty sections that you jump between. The enemy variety is lacking but I believe that is because I didn't play far enough (I didn't reach a boss yet, cannot write about that). The Amiibos focused around the game allow for a replaying of the campaign levels, but with a twist (Time Trial, or using a different weapon). These missions reward you with the game's currency and Amiibo -exclusive Items. The game's customization allows for headgear, an outfit, and shoes, which each come with abilities (Save ink, faster respawn times, less damage taken, etc). There is a lot of abilities and I have yet to fully experiment, but it looks like there is a lot of customization that you can do to try and find a set of abilities that works for you. Before I get to things I don't like, I want to reiterate that I have has a blast playing this game so far. However, I have run into a few minor things that i didn't like about the game: --Only online 5 maps (There will be more coming out in the future, see the Splatoon Nintendo Direct). --If you want to switch gear, you have to leave the online queue, switch, and then re-enter the queue. --Lack of starting weapons (You only have 1 option at the start of the game, but less than 30 minutes of gameplay changes that). I would give this game a 9/10 on launch, but I suspect that with the amount of free additional content planned (Again, look into the Splatoon Nintendo Direct from May for more information) this game would move up to a 10 in my mind. This review is a first impression, and I don't want to rate based on content that I have not personally seen. Overall Splatoon is a fantastic strategic shooter that focuses on territory over kills, and is a very colorful addition to a genre that is dominated by dull browns and greys.

Splatoon takes the basic idea of team shooters, and replaces it with ink. And squids. And kids. (Which you're one of, by the way) Of the two game-play elements, Single Player is good for the neophyte Inkling, in order to comfortably get used to the game's mechanics before leaping into the Online Multiplayer. You have the option to use the GamePad's gyroscope for motion controlled camera/turning, it's VERY responsive, but you can also turn that off and use the GamePad's control sticks if that suits you better. NOTE: The three amiibo that were sold for a very short while, each unlock challenges that reflect how far you've gotten in the Single Player story. You have conditions that must be adhered to in order to pass a challenge. Such as a time limit, or a finite supply of ink you can use. Or you can just jump right into Multiplayer and wing it. To become the freshest squidkid on the block, you have to rank up. And to rank up, you gotta play online with pretty much anyone that you encounter. Ranked Battle is unlocked after you reach Level 10 from playing Turf Wars for a bit. Making the bigger mess than the other team is the focus of Turf Wars, in which a time limit of 3 minutes is placed. You earn the in-game multiplayer 'currency' by playing online, the better you do, the more you earn. And using that to upgrade/buy gear, and by ranking up enough, you get access to more gear with better stats. (Think Team Fortress 2 with all the hats, but throw in clothes, too) Recently(August 5th), a big update released for the US, bringing Splatoon up to v2.0 Adds Squad Battles & Private Battles. Level cap raised to 50.
