Super Smash Bros is my all-time favorite fighting game franchise, and finally having one I can play on the go is amazing. The stages are diverse and generally fun to fight on, and the massive roster is another huge plus. I won't always have access to a Wii U, so having the 3DS version makes it easier to play when I get the urge. Even if you only care about the Wii U version, get this one anyway, and register both on Club Nintendo. You'll be glad you did.

This Smash definitely goes back to the routes of the original. Good old fashion multiplayer madness. It really is top notch and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Smash Bros series.

The 3DS controls are what ruin this game. It can't tell up from right or left. The large, boxy shape gets to be awkward as the time wears on and I see the 3DS version taking a complete backseat to the WiiU one once it comes out. It's like this is just to tide us over.

The game plays well even on a small handheld console. There are many fun characters you can choose to play as and lots of different modes you can play for hours. Highly recommend.

    Portable SMASH!

If you enjoyed previous Smash games, this is more of the same game you love. The added portability of the 3ds allows for Smash whenever you want. The new characters are interesting and varied with Little Mac being a standout for my preferences. I'm not sure how I feel about splitting known characters like Samus/Zero Suit Samus or Zelda/Sheik, since it was pretty rad to effectively bring two characters to a match when selecting one of them. The new stages are fun, though, I appreciated how previous Smash games separated the selection to new stages and previous Smash stages. Smash Run is fun and frenetic but I really liked the insane story of Subspace Emissary from Brawl. Control is what you'd expect from the little 3ds analog nub and no C-Stick. It takes some getting used to and the New 3ds is coming that will address the C-Stick issues, but that might be a high barrier to entry for owners of the original 3ds. Multiplayer is a little hit or miss depending on how deep you go online. For Glory is for the competitive players and For Fun is for everyone else (myself). Though the most fun I've had playing Smash is with a room full of people yelling at the television. I think the 3ds XL screen is still a bit too small for Smash, though perfectly playable, and I don't know anyone with both 3ds and Smash, so couch co-op is out for me. The Wii U version will be more up my alley when it releases in November, but the added portability makes this version a stand out. Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone that has a 3ds though. It is extremely impressive what they've accomplished on a 3ds title, though it does make me yearn for playing with friends on a large television.

I originally planned to only get the game on Wii U, but a Club Nintendo promotion for a soundtrack and Best Buy promotion for a collector coin, plus the fact that the 3DS version was releasing first, convinced me to just get both. When I tried the demo a week before release I panicked. The controls made the game almost completely unplayable for me. I kept my preorder anyway (REALLY want that soundtrack) but expected I would probably trade the game in shortly after release. After spending about 4 hours on my first night with the game, I've decided to keep it. The full version of the game allows you to customize the controls, which helps a lot... but any long-time Smash player will tell you that the GameCube controller is still the best setup for this game. There's a reason Nintendo is releasing a GameCube>Wii U controller adapter that works with JUST THIS GAME. Even for new players, the controls are much easier to learn that way - the giant round button in the middle is for your main attacks, the smaller round button next to it is for your special attacks and the kidney shaped buttons above are for jumps. The identical round buttons in a diamond arrangement have become a standard setup on controllers now, but the GameCube controller just feels like it was designed perfectly for this series. Beyond that, the game has everything the old ones did and more - more characters, more options, more customizations, more game modes - and all of it makes the game feel wonderfully fresh while still also being perfectly familiar and easy for long time players to jump into and feel right at home. The only other gripe I would add is one I've heard from many other people... when the action spreads out too much (common in 4 player match-ups) the characters get way too tiny, and identifying items becomes nearly impossible. I'm playing on an XL... I can't imagine how bad it must be on an original 3DS or 2DS. All that being said, it's still an amazingly fun game and definitely a success for the first portable outing of the series. A couple minor gripes but they're small sacrifices to make in order to be able to SMASH on the go.

Ok. This game is great. The only thing keeping it from being awesome is the fact that it's on a handheld system. I'm not knocking the 3DS at all; I love it. It just takes getting used to playing such a big game on a not so big screen. I might have to get a 3DS XL in the future. As for the game, it's wonderful. Nintendo did a great job packing everything Super Smash Bros. related into this little package. All the modes are available, the additional characters are cool and I totally enjoy the gameplay. I'm looking forward to the interactivity of this game with the Wii U version when it comes out. Anybody wanting to have a little fun should get this game. You'll be in for a "smashing" good time!

The game does so much right that you can overlook it's flaws. Most are hardware related. Pros - Full Smash Bros experience on a handheld - Beautiful graphics at 60 frames - Tons of content - Controls great even with the 3DS limitations - Better gameplay than Brawl. Less floaty physics and more balance. Cons - Online is terrible if not played with friends with good connections - Some new modes fall flat on their face - Less songs than Brawl and WiiU versions (Cart size an issue I presume) - At times hard to keep track of the action Even with the cons this game is still extremely fun and impressive for the system it's on. The Online sucking is the biggest con here and again I might contribute this to the hardware more than anything else. In fact things like cart space, controls, online, screen size are hardware related and not so much faults of the game so i'll cheat and give the game a pass here. Especially since it's really the full on smash experience in handheld and not watered down.

I've been excited to play a portable version of super smash since the creation of the series and it's finally become a reality! It works best in local multiplayer, but unfortunately is still a little slow online. However, once you are use to the controls on the DS (a difference experience for someone whose experienced the whole series with a console controller) it's a great experience. An additional benefit to owning this game is that it allows you to use your 3DS as an extra controller when playing on the console version! I definitely recommend it to any Smash lover or to anyone who doesn't yet own the WiiU.

If you've been looking for a portable way to play super smash brothers, there's not better remedy than Smash 3DS. With a full array of fighters, the game plays just as well as the WiiU version. That being said, the game feels far more barren than the WiiU version, with fewer features and fewer modes to choose from. If you'll have the opportunity to play the WiiU version regularly, it may be worth skipping this portable iteration. But, if you're likely to be playing this with friends out and about, I can't recommend this enough, as it gives the full multiplayer experience of smash right in your pocket.

Gameplay: The classical smash bros gameplay in a portable package, what more could you want? Graphics/Art Style: Nintendo did a wonderful job with the art style given the 3ds graphical limitations. They even allow you to customize line depth for the perfect look. Music: All the classic tunes and stages that you would expect and then some. Fun: This is hands down one of the most fun-filled games for the 3ds. Whether you pick up to play up a bot match for a few minutes or play online you will have a blast. This is a must-buy for any 3ds owner because there is something for everyone.

While the 3DS screen size is much smaller than the WiiU console version, it still offers up a similar Smash Bros experience on your handheld 3DS. The obvious downside is that if you want to play against someone else you would either have to go online, or local wifi against another 3DS player. You can use the 3DS as a controller for the WiiU Smash Bros but there isn't cross platform play. While the "New 3DS" can already read amiibos. Nintendo is releasing an 3DS amiibo reader, which you can even use for older versions of the 3DS.

You can never go wrong with the Super Smash Bros. series and this version doesn't disappoint. Gameplay is on par with it's Wii U twin and the graphics are nothing to laugh at either. The online is also surprisingly great when you take into account that there are many people playing on the servers every day. The only gripes I have with this game is the fact that it is very hard to keep track on your character during 4 player smashes considering that the screen zooms out for a view of every characters.
