    A Lemon

Either we were unlucky to find the only 2 lemons out there, or Toshiba makes a very bad product. We purchased this computer, it crashed during the set up process. The Geek Squad would not fix it, just wanted us to return it. So we returned it, and the second computer did the set up fine, but the next time we turned it on, it would not work. 2 lemons. Needless to say, we returned the second computer and purchased a different computer from a different company. This was the computer that the floor staff recommended to us. I can't imagine how horrible the rest of the computers are!

Thank you for the review, Rosana, and sorry to hear about the trouble with your Satellite P55Ws.

I wonder if you can provide any more detail about the symptoms you experienced. Unfortunately terms like "crashed" and "would not work" don't give us a very good idea of exactly what was happening. I understand that you already returned the product but for the benefit of other Satellite P55W users reading this review who may need help with their unit, I just want to point out that Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 can assist with troubleshooting and diagnosis, and support agents there resolve the issues for most calls over the phone.

Thanks again for the feedback and sorry for the trouble. Toshiba

Great except the Intel AC Wireless card

I bought and recommended a total of 3 of these for family members over the Holidays. After sinking more than 36 hours of troubleshooting and setting up these, I kept getting complaints of sluggish performance from the family. I finally came across quite a few forums discussing the issues related to the Intel Wireless card performing well close to a hotspot and then degrading in performance as you left the vicinity of the wireless router, unless it was a specific group of AC wireless routers. Since the family had whatever Comcast decided to give them, getting a new one was not a cost effective option. I verified this over and over again in different houses compared to both phones and other laptops. Since Windows 10 connects to the internet for everything, this resulted in sluggish performance despite the specs. Too bad because everything else about this Laptop is top notch for the price. Recently they released another driver for the Wireless card but I no longer have the laptops to test. Hope this helps, also, this card is used in other laptops by other manufacturers, it is an Intel AC 7260 series. When shopping you can go to the Control Panel in Windows 10 and then click on the Blue hyperlink to take you to the Device Manager. There you can click on the Network Adapter and see if this is listed. Again, they did release an updated driver that I cannot confirm if it did fix the issue.

Thank you for the review, ooflakie and sorry to hear about the Wi-Fi problem on your Satellite P55W-C5204.

If Windows is displaying a "limited" or "no connectivity" message or indicating "no Internet access" even though you know that your Wi-Fi router is connected to the Internet, there's a fix for which is normally installed automatically by Windows Update. This may be the wireless driver to which you were referring.

Microsoft's support article at support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3114149 explains details about the symptom, cause, and how to implement the solution. Toshiba also has a Support Bulletin at www.support.toshiba.com/sscontent?contentId=4008443 with detailed instructions on how to manually implement the solution.

I was buying a computer for my nephew and the salesman recommended the Toshiba. Having never owned this brand before, we ended up buying it. My nephew got it home and it worked for an hour or so and then quit working. He ended up taking it back today and the Geek Squad looked at it and found out it was defective (a lemon in other words). I was not impressed with the Toshiba brand name, but I was extremely impressed with how The Geek Squad worked with my sister and my nephew in replacing it with another new computer. Let's hope the HP they got in its place works better.

I believe this laptop has the potential to be a great computer but there seem to be some bugs related to Windows 10 at this point. I purchased this laptop and could only get limited Internet service. The techs checked the computer and recommended that I exchange for another one. I exchanged for the exact type of computer and the same thing happened again. I guess it might be better to wait until the bugs are worked out with Windows 10.

Thank you for the review, Logan and sorry to hear about the connectivity problem on your Satellite P55W-C5204.

This model, like all of those that we ship with Windows 10, is known to work fine with Wi-Fi so I'm at a loss to understand how you got two different units with this problem. (I just happen to be using the same exact model and configuration right now.)

I wonder if you've tried resetting your Wi-Fi router or connecting to a public Wi-Fi hotspot, or used any other Windows 10 PC at the location where you were having trouble with this unit.

Please also take a look at the Toshiba Forums community knowledge base article at http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Networking-Wi-Fi-Knowledge-Base/What-can-I-do-if-my-Wi-Fi-wireless-isn-t-working-in-Windows-10/ta-p/663603 for Windows 10 Wi-Fi usage and troubleshooting tips.

I bought the laptop when the salesperson told me that it was a great laptop, I loved the computer but the downfall is whenever it went to sleep, it would reboot over and over. I even restored the computer but it did it again. I thought it was good but that bad experience. I went to get the same computer but they have rn out so I bought a different one.

Had this laptop for 2 months and it crashes. Apparently this isn't covered under the warranty. Best Buy offered to repair it for a price. I don't know if it's Toshiba or Microsoft that's the real problem but I really don't care. Really disappointed in Best Buy's lack of customer support. Can't believe i wasted $900 on this. Thank you for the review, Disgusted, and sorry to hear that you encountered some sort of issue with your Satellite P55W-C5204.

The warranty covers any defect in parts and workmanship but without more details about the nature of the "crashes" it's not clear whether or not you're experiencing a hardware problem. The best way to determine if a problem you're experiencing is caused by a hardware failure or a software installation or configuration change is to perform a Windows Reset, returning the product to factory condition.

See the Toshiba Forums community knowledge base article and its embedded video at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-do-I-reset-my-Windows-10-computer-to-factory-defaults/ta-p/657990 for detailed instructions on how to perform a Windows Reset.

Got it home went thru registration process and had problems right away. Screen went blank so i had to reset it and start over. It seemed to be o.k. and so i shut it down and booted back up and it was stuck in the dreaded preparing to repair mode. Took it to best buy and they had it 3 days before diagnosing it with a bad operating system. Thank god i purchased the protection plan they swapped it out no questions asked.

Thank you for the review, chill, and sorry to hear about the "command not recognized" message you encountered while using your Satellite P55W-C5204.

I wonder if you can share more details about the circumstances under which you experienced that error message. Were you at a command prompt at the time, or were you trying to execute an app by clicking its icon? If the latter, which app(s) and have you uninstalled any software since initially setting up the system?

If the problem persists, I recommend performing a Windows Reset, putting the software back to factory condition to clarify whether or not the problem you are experiencing was introduced by software installation or a configuration change. See the Toshiba Forums community knowledge base article and its embedded video at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-Refresh-Reset-and-Recovery/ta-p/342690 for detailed instructions on how to perform a Windows Reset.

Thank you for the review, Dougthepug, and sorry to hear about the issues with your Satellite P55W.

Since you listed three different and apparently unrelated symptoms, I recommend doing a Windows Reset to restore the laptop to its factory settings. That will eliminate any symptom caused by software installations or updates. The Toshiba Forums community knowledge base article at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-Refresh-Reset-and-Recovery/ta-p/342690 has more details and step-by-step instructions for that process.

Thank you for the review, kykart, and sorry to hear that you're not happy with the initial performance of your Satellite P55W-C5204.

It's possible that Windows Update has been busy downloading & installing updates. That's typically the case with brand new systems, and if so it will tax initial performance until the updating process is completed. The impact of that initial updating process would normally pass within a few days, but the updating process would start over from scratch every time a full system recovery is executed.

I wonder what symptom you were trying to address by performing the system restore, whether or not it was resolved, and if there are any ongoing issues at this time.

If any problem persists please visit support.toshiba.com or contact Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 for troubleshooting help.

Thank you for the review, Fred, and sorry to hear that you ran into some sort of a "black out" problem with your Satellite P55W-C5204.

I'm not clear on exactly what you're experiencing but I believe you're saying that that it's some kind of situation involving a black screen.

If you still have the unit I recommend performing a Windows Reset to restore Windows to its default configuration, since black screens can indicate corruption of critical drivers or Windows itself.

We tried this computer two times and had problems with both. The first one we had problems with from the beginning, during set-up it froze and we had to force shut down (and no we didn't connect to the internet during set-up so the windows updates are not to blame like the Toshiba responses to people's reviews say); we had problems with the keyboard; the computer screen kept freezing, it would drop the wifi connection all the time (we have two other computers and a tablet connected to the wifi with no issues, so it's not the internet connection); when you place youtube videos on full screen it would freeze and you can't exit the full screen, you have to force shut down; it would just turn off by itself (we would be using it and bang the computer screen turns black and restarts); it's a piece of rubbish that doesn't even last past it's first day. We thought that maybe we had a defected computer and exchanged it for another after having problems with it for a week; the second one is just as bad with the same problems, unless by some weird odds two factory defected computers landed on us, this computer has some serious issues and should be recalled by Toshiba; we plan on returning the second one for a refund this time and looking for something else, we are disappointed in Toshiba for selling such a defected product.

I bought this computer to take it to college but after using it for a month I think I need to buy a different laptop. I can't connect to the Internet first off. Apparently it's a pretty common problem with this specific model and it has to do with the wifi chip inside the computer. Not every laptop has this problem but it's the luck of the draw. Secondly the battery life is awful and dies with no notice after about an hour of use. It also gets painfully hot after about half an hour. Also the touchpad stopped working all of a sudden and I can only use the laptop as a touchscreen. I really want to love this computer but it keeps letting me down.

Thank you for the review, throwaway, and sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your Satellite P55W-C5204.

The touchpad can be toggled ON and OFF by using the 'F5' function key. If inadvertently pressed, it will disable the touchpad. The good news is that now that you know this you will be able to toggle the touchpad back on by pressing the F5 again to re-enable it.

Please see the Toshiba Forums knowledge base article at http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Networking-Wi-Fi-Knowledge-Base/What-can-I-do-if-my-Wi-Fi-wireless-isn-t-working-in-Windows-10/ta-p/663603 for help troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in Windows 10.

The unexpected and without warning shutdown of the system is concerning, since Windows should always warn you if it needs to shut down due to a low battery charge condition. I wonder if you've confirmed that the battery has actually died by trying to turn it back on after one of these shutdowns occurs. Since you're also reporting excessive heat, I recommend leaving it off for 5-10 minutes before turning it back to, to give it an opportunity to cool down a bit. If it turns back on and continues to operate for any significant period of time that would indicate that it may be strictly an overheating problem, rather than a battery problem.

In either case, I recommend reporting the details to Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 for further troubleshooting help and, if needed, to make warranty repair arrangements.

Thanks again for the feedback and sorry for the trouble. Toshiba
