I got one of these because I moved and the new house's electrical grid didn't work with powerline adapters. I've had good experience with the powerlines, so I hoped these would be comparable.
I have to use these because I rent my house and run a home server so instead of trying to run a long ethernet cable from the router to the closet I keep the server in, these kinds of devices help out a ton. That said, I chose this model for the ethernet port. I don't need the range extension at all, just the port.
I set the device up with the OneMesh, which my router supported. Devices see it as the router, not as being connected to an extender, so it's hard to say if there was any difference with or without it. You manage the extender from the app and in there, you can switch the network ID to something else and connect to it directly like a separate router. Since I was only in this for the ethernet port, the OneMesh setup was fine.
As far as how they compare to the powerline adapters, the kind of don't... at least for the ethernet. It's better than nothing, but I'm still tempted to run a cable instead. Speeds will be ok for a while, but eventually they get really dismal. Gets a little hot, but it doesn't seem so hot that it would cause problems. There is also nothing electronic between the router and the extender... just a couple of walls.
Unplugging it for a minute will sometimes kick it back up a little, but in general, it's sluggish. Accessing files on the server while the extender is being iffy is very slow and painful. I can't really say whether the WiFi extender works well because I didn't have bad coverage to begin with.
So my current opinion of this (for the ethernet port, at least) is that if your electrical wiring can handle it, go with the powerline. I can't really say much on the Wi-Fi extension.

The range extender is used to reach a part of our home where there is no computer cable, but where it is needed. It works! The Extender found the router as soon as it was extended, and has continued to work flawlessly, even recovering from power outages without any intervention. Highly recommended.

We needed this because our cable companies rotor box was not reaching our back porch area. We plug it into our kitchen beside our porch and it works well.

Great product, easy to set up. My expectations weren’t high because of the low price but this little guy is amazing! Set up took 5 minutes and it expanded the reach of our WiFi through our home. We’ve had multiple extenders from our internet carrier and none have worked as well as this.

Easy to install and fixed the problem. The app is nice. Wi-Fi signal wasn't getting to an outside bedroom. Everything streams perfectly now. Signal strength in that room is like it was in the room with the router.
