Drive is loud, hot, and slow.

The drive is just OK overall. The drive gets really hot during transfers. I actually keep a laptop cooler under it since I'm constantly using the drive for media. It takes several seconds after idle just to start spinning up and loading what you want. Lastly, the drive is loud. You can hear the movement from the mechanism inside. Overall I'd recommend looking at a different drive if that's an option.

WD internal and external drives have always been very reliable for me. I have two WD My Book external drives that are used for image backups from several Windows PC's. One is attached to a WD My Cloud drive on the network, the other is disconnected. By alternating the two drives periodically, there are always backups that are safely off the network in case of a ransomware attack. Kind of like an insurance policy you hope to never need to use.

I have had the best luck with WD drives. They seem to have less failures than other brands. This is the 4th of these that I have and works perfect for primary or back up drive.

I needed an external HD that would hold a lot of data. This is perfect for my back ups. I won't fill this anytime soon. Easy to use software.

Easy to shuck if you search for online guides and can buy enterprise quality drive at significant savings vs buying NAS ready drives of the same size.

I need to house some file (pre-server) and 8TB was the best I could find off the shelf. The only down side is that if I wish the edit video from them they are not the fastest and can also be a little loud when hung up

After only a couple of weeks of using this drive, it started clicking consistently. It sounded like the drive was failing. I bought a second drive, and that one lagged and had connection issues. This seems to only happen with the WD 8TB drives. I have used the WD My Book 4TB drives for years with no problems. I returned to those and will stick with those!

This is my preferred external drive for all my (Mac) computers. I have a few streaming servers and the 8TB is sufficiently large enough to hold hundreds of videos and thousands of songs. It will transfer data fast enough to support the streaming servers and is easy to install (just power and USB connection) and is very quiet. It also doesn't have a power switch or on light - if it's connected to the computer and the computer is on the drive will be operational - it will come back on automatically after a power outage without having to flip a switch.

This is a good bit of storage for the price. Not the fastest drive, but great bang for the buck. I find WD drives last a good while too. Several years on avg.

I have 2 of these drives. Primary use is as a main back up for smaller portable drives that I take on location with me for big weekend photo shoots. They work but are slow and clumsy when attempting to save large amounts of data to them and slow to retrieve images. I am in the process of replacing them with a better, faster and more reliable drive.

Huge Storage for a small price! I've been buying the 3 and 4 TB backups for a while. When this one went on sale for $199, I couldn't pass it up! USB 3.0, fast, quiet and LOTS of room for picture/video storage!

OK, so Ive already transferred 62Tbs of Data from this little 8Tb external HDD and I have No complains. While hoked up via USB 3.0 I average about 175mbs transfer speed and Ive literally used this to collect the .mkv files from ripping my home Blu-Rays onto my home server. Its been handling so much data transfer and running at an average of 16-18 ours a day for 2 weeks straight to achieve this.. I’m impressed and its the biggest bang for the buck at 8tbs external HHD standalone period!

Set up was a snap. It was plug and play with Windows 7. I deleted the software that came on the drive. I use SyncToy (from Micro$oft) to backup my data
