I was looking for an alternative for data storage, since I tend to use portable hard disk. I needed a desktop solution, fast and cost effective. And I found it in the WD My Book. With 8TB, I can easily storage my documents, the photos from both my camera and my cellphone, and the transfer speed is amazing. Totally recommended.

I purchased two of these to help with home movies and pictures and so far they've performed flawlessly. Setup was extremely easy and the speed across my network has been great. I got these on sale, which made it even a better deal. I've had WD products before and have been impressed with their reliability.

Spend that extra $20 and get a Western digital. I've had lots of failed or failing seagates that never happens on wd.

The hardware is great, were designed and ready to use out of the box. However, Having it ready to use out of the box also presents issues: my intent was to attach it to the router as a media server for the network. But the router doesn't work with ex-FAT formatting; which given the router is running a version of Linux (Linksys WRT 1900 ACS) is not surprising. It would have been much more convenient to have a setup option to select the format or (better yet) read the system characteristics and recommend a format. So, the router didn't work in native format. I found o format it wanted and reformatted the drive to EXT2 and it will work OK but I can't place it behind the firewall. So I attach it to the Win10 Pro box via USB3 after reformatting it to NTSF exFAT and now the system cycles through the reboot cycle infinitely: clearly Win10 is not happy with an NTSF exFAT 8TB USB drive. I managed to fix that, but it required another reformat into Fat32 which Win10 then mounts as GPT. Really a bit much to set the thing up. I'd still recommend it but a caveat that Win10 might get a bit snarky about it depending on your BIOS and other drive configurations. Also, don't expect to be plug 'n play into a router or a NAS system: they probably want something other than the default formatting.

The WD - My Book 8TB Hard Drive has massive storage and transfer of files is very fast and easy. Comes with a power cord and USB 3.0 cable to connect to your PC. There’s no software required and comes with a set of simple utilities for backing up your PC and setting up some rudimentary security. Great product.

I really prefer the WD HDD product line. They hold up for years and never have had problems with it. This hard drive has great capacity and a sturdy encasing. However the downside of this item is that it has no Led (light) indicator. How would I know if it is on or operating correctly, before looking at a screen (TV, monitor).

This external hard drive not only is large (8TB) but it is fast as well. Our film production company used it to store our film footage and ship it to our editor. The drive is fast enough that our editor could work directly off the drive despite the huge file sizes of our footage.

Great storage addition with easy set up. I really only like this external storage unit group from WD because they have the ability to set up password protection with software that comes as part of the drive. Best Buy matched B&H Photo price which reduced the price $30 and made it an easy decision to purchase here.

pretty good external 8tb hdd for backup with low price

My first impression of this drive was not good, since the first one was DOA. I returned it to Best Buy and the replacement works as advertised. It is a no frills unit which doesn’t even have a “power on” LED, but , for the money it has a lot of storage space and works well. Good bargain drive.

I believe in redundancy. I back up to my back up to my back up. When this came on sale I snapped it up. WD hard drives are the best. All my others are also WD. And at 8 TB there’s plenty of room to back up for an average user.

Purchased this because I needed to make room on my Powerbook drive. Connection and setup easy, transferred all my movies to it and now have lots of room on my computer and all of my movies in one easy to access place on MyBook. Great purchase.

This is the second one we have bought. The first is our main storage for everything on a couple of computers accumulated over the years. The second is to back up all of our photos which is a lot as our main hobby is photography.

I have been using the WD 8 tb external drive for a few days now, but I have no complaints. Has worked well with my PS4 and has been great to use. Setting it up was super fast and easy and with the space available means that I will have the space for more games.

What can I say, Western Digital pretty much specializes in hard drives and this one is no different. This works well, has good consistent speeds and a suitable amount of storage space. If you need an external non-SSD HDD, you might be able to pick one of these up for a reasonable price.

Games are becoming so large it’s impossible to know when you could run out of storage space. With as little as 5 games you can fill a 500GB hard drive and have to shuffle games out of rotation. Fingers crossed this will have enough storage to last me more tha. A year.

Solid and Sturdy. Works like a charm and an excellent back up. However, make sure you place it in an open area as it can get a little hot. For example, it can get really hot if left on a carpeted floor, but not so much sitting on a desk.

It didn't require anything special on my computer to use and you can just navigate though the file explorer in Windows, create folders and use the copy/paste functions. I don't like the fact that needs to be plugged in to the power to be used, so consider to have a connection available.

An excellent product. Exceeds my expectations for speed (both throughput and internal operations)
