I've had a 2TB WD nas for last 4yrs but outgrew it. I could use it to stream and backup at the same time no problem. Also the firmware was not so demanding on the unit and user friendly. For backups you did not need to assign a user to it.
Now I decided to get the 6TB WD my cloud to allow me to add all new computers and smartphones. First thing I did was update firmware. Then I setup users and shares. The interface is more of a fancier GUI Than older one but very bloated.
Anyway, I started backing up 1 computer with multiple partitions and drive at a time and was have issues where it would just sit there and drop off the network and then come back ... Repeat. I called WD and was Told to reset to factory defaults to clear it up. Tried again setting all up. Still failed. Tried 1 partition at time. Still failed.
Did some research and found Trick was turning off all media sharing for the shares and backups as that was taking up all the nas processor bandwidth and causing the nas to drop off-line.
Once all the backups from 6 computers were done, I turned on the sharing. All good but crazy it cannot do what it was built to do which is backup and share.
Here are some other tips you can thank me later for.
For ensuring long life, I have strapped a 60mm fan to back side of the nas to give it forced airflow. it reduced case temperature from 100F+down to steady 80F
Other recommendation is to have it connected to a ups so if power drops out, you don't stress the electronics.

This is a good personal cloud product for personal and group storage, has good amount of space for storage on this drive, it's very quiet while running and is very accessible over the net for a NAS device.

A Better Alternative for Cloud Backup

I was torn between using an Internet Cloud service for backup versus having my own external hard drive connected to my router. I looked at the pluses and minuses of Internet Cloud versus personal Cloud. I decided that the pluses of a personal Cloud outweighed the pluses of Internet Cloud, while its negatives were not great enough to outweigh that decision. What I liked about the WD MyCloud was that I could directly connect the MyCloud to my router via an Ethernet cord so that it could handle backup of all of my wireless devices, be accessible by everything on my home network, and could also be accessed via the Internet when I was traveling.
I chose the 6TB version simply because I didn't want to decide I needed a larger capacity later. I certainly don't need that much at this time, but the extra cost for the additional capacity wasn't a problem.
It was easy to install, and I had no problems with setting up its backup software on the two laptops and one Surface Pro 3 that I am currently backing up. I will say that the setup process wasn't quite as simple as the instructions leads you to believe, but it isn't not so involved that I needed to rely on outside help.
It has been functioning fine since I installed it. And it is exactly what I was desiring to add to my home network, and I am glad I purchased and installed it.

This lovely gadget is easy to install. It takes a minute or two to understand how to the best way to navigate (dashboard shortcut VS digging in the network for the folder), but once you're over that hump you're in the clear. I've already tested it out an was able to play music/videos directly from the drive remotely using my phone. The user interface on the desktop software is super simple and user-friendly. The app is as well, but they could improve on it a little bit when it comes to managing viewed VS downloaded items. I feel that there are just too many steps and sub menus to find what you want to see.
I'm almost completely filled on this one and considering getting another!!
There is a little glitch with the drive: if you accidentally misspell your email during the registration process there is no way to correct it without a quick format, but WD's customer support was very helpful.

Purchased 5 of these for a project at work to backup data off of our network. The unit was easy to setup on wired network we didn't use the wireless or cloud function so I can't comment on that. The units worked fine the data transfer speed was OK just wish it was a bit faster.

My pics. still looking different if I open them from MyCloud. It looks like there is a different way to do that, I'm still working on it. Other than this, the product is working fine. I woul need more time to give more information and advise about it. Work in progress .....

Bought this to enable online access from various sites. Set up was initially easy but THERE ARE TOO MANY OPTIONS available on the WD site which do NOT integrate appropriately. Had to work with help desk, which took a full hour while they logged into my pc to set it up (it would not recognize the WD drive as a back up source - only the iCloud). Anyway, we worked through it but NEVER GOT IT TO DO ALL IT CLAIMED. Even the tech rep said there was no reason the WD backup would not work but to use the Windows 7 backup (which is not fast at all - but at least it worked).

The MyCloud comes with very little setup instructions, however the Western Digital MyCloud web site provides additional information for setup options. It only took minutes to get started. The device can not be remotely managed, but I find this as a security plus. The users that are provided accounts can easily assess the MyCloud device with an internet connected computer or cell phone using the MyCloud app. If power is disrupted to the MyCloud, you will receive an email alert. Performance for accessing your data is restricted by internet, home network and cell network speeds. I have not found any performance issues unless I have a bad cell connection. Users easily access the device from any internet connection after accepting the MyCloud certificate. The MyCloud app is easier to use. Shared folder rules determine what your users are permitted to do and what they can see. Options are also provided for automatic backups. I recommend you take the time to review the Western Digital's MyCloud web site to determine if the features meet your needs.

The device in itself is good and reliable. The website for interface with it needs improvement in functionality. The initial setup is good but modifying it later is a bit cumbersome. They also need to improve their encryption.

This is my first personal Cloud, I opted for the larger TB size because I like movies and large file programs. So far the unit is great, backs up my programs and files perfectly, accessing them is simple and easy from anywhere, including my smartphone, nice for work documents and prints.

Haven't had any real problems with this NAS. Am able to pull up files, photos or whatever else I have stored on it with ease from any device I have connected, including my iPhone and iPad. Besides basic storage and retrieval, I haven't played around with the extra features as of yet.

While I thought I had a problem with the setup it was just the fact that this massive storage device take a bit of time to be recognized by the system. Once recognized the setup and operation were and are a breeze.

this unit has a large amount of space to store photos, videos and documents.. However the user interface is not that easy to navigate. I exported all of my photos from my devices "automatically" and then realized it would have been better to import them manually so I could sort them into organized files. Now I have twice the data on my device and need to edit the duplicates and triplicates off. The aps are soso.. Lots of search issues. The screen captures from my ipad do not show thumbnails on the device either.. So locating them is time consuming because you have to open each one to see what it is.. As it only assigns it a number file name. I still have not figured out how to rename the files.. But I suspect that option is available.. However its not easy to find those types of options. There are also two different aps you need to install.. One does the downloads and the other is for organization. Again... Fairly complicated.
My biggest pro would be the fact that this unit has a large amount of storage.. Con would be that its not very user friendly.

I bought this mainly to serve as a media server for my various Rokus throughout the house. It does this very well. It doesn't transcode video, but all my videos are in a compatible format already so that's not a problem. So, as a media server if you've already got files in the correct format (most MP4s are fine) then it's actually really good.
Backing up the data on it is where it falls down. It advertises a USB 3.0 port. Not sure how true that is. I plugged my 4TB usb 3.0 drive into it to backup the data on it, as I like to have a separate backup and proceeded to start backing up about 3TB of data. 3TB is a lot but after it took over 30 hours to get to 75% complete I gave up on it.
Instead I plugged the external drive into my personal system and setup a backup process to backup the files from the NAS over the network (I have a wired gigabit network). Took 10 hours flat. Much better.
So, it doesn't transcode, not a problem for me, but maybe for some, and the USB port is a joke. Otherwise, though, for just storage and media serving, it works well enough.

Works great: running for about 3 weeks now. WD Smartware software on all 3 our local intranet workstations need to be running for backups functions to work. All 3 workstations are off for the night. Next day all 3 are running.. but I need to start up the Smartware software each day manually. Need to figure out how to automatically start the Smartware on boot. Need to configure your computer to load the Smartware on loading Win 8.1.
We found that Smartware does after a few days actually get around to moving updated files from our local C:\ drive and external 3TB WD My Book Essentials to the NAS drive. I placed a dummy .txt file on the external drive and waited for few days for it to be transferred to the NAS drive. Finally it showed up on the NAS drive. Our local Intranet network is running at gigabit speed so it has to be a slow Smartware issue.

After taking a little bit to get it setup and move all my files over, then configure all of the users and shares, this unit has been great. Streaming video/photos/music works well. The admin interface is decent enough although a little slow changing pages/settings. All in all I think it's worth the money. Gets my files off my main machine and makes them accessible to all on my network.
