So far I have been extremely pleased with the quality, power, ease of setup, ergonomics of the display, remote, etc. - it is replacing a still excellent and powerful Sony receiver whose only issue was it is old enough it can't pass a 4K signal, so it's going to be moved to the secondary system. I wish the remote were backlit, but that's a minor quibble. I found it simpler to just manually balance the speaker adjustments than use the YPAO microphone analysis, and it all sounds terrific. There were many good choices at this price point, and I've usually gone with Sony units with SACD capabilities, but in the living room setup, that wasn't necessary in this case, and I'm counting (fingers crossed) on the long term reliability of Yamaha this receiver based on past experience. I did buy the service protection plan since it was an open box item, but it was in seemingly perfect condition upon opening it as reflected in the open box description.

Moving up from a Sony, to a Pioneer, to a denon, and then to this is a whole new world of sound. The difference in sound this has compared to the others I've had is immense. Clearer, sharper, less noise, better highs, tighter bass and better response all around..... On the same speakers. Even the surround effects work better, better stage, better movement, more accurate spacing, and more accurate timing. The voice tones are much better and there is zero need to boost the voice on the center channel compared to what I had before. The auto sound setup and calibration actually works! I haven't need to do a single tweaking on any of the channels. I would suggest this Yamaha over ANY of the other brands I've tried in the past. Also, easy set up, works exceptionally well for blue ray HD pass-through, no issues on the video, no issues getting the TV, Blue ray, and receiver talking. Just flawless setup.

Only complaint is that the online specs are a little bit off (which I knew before buying). It claims an RMS of 160W 2 channel driven, which is misleading, if not flat out incorrect. RMS is actually 100W, 2 channel driven. Also the listed depth accounts for the front control knobs and the rear antennas. Listed depth is 15 inches but it actually fits very nicely on my 11.5 inch shelf. Otherwise improved sound quality and connectivity was apparent compared to my old sony STR-DH750. I love musiccast and the ability to play sirius xm, pandora and digital music from my phone via wi-fi.

Yamaha RX A880: Music to my ears!

This AV was not actually my first choice, but is my second Yamaha AV, preceded by a Pioneer Elite SC-25. I bot a Pioneer Elite VSX LX 303 ( eBay) before buying the Yamaha A880, but it was defective and it back to the seller. It was a powerful amp and had a bigger power supply than the A880. Starting from scratch, the LX 303 was my reference AV and I narrowed my choice to the Pioneer LX 303, the Onkyo TX NR 696 and the Yamaha RX A680. All three were in my budget of $400-600. When I went to BB to listen to the amps, they only had the LX 303 and the Yamaha's. Even tho the Pioneer had the bigger power supply, the Yamaha blew me away. The realism, dynamics, resolution just floored me! My local BB had an open box A880 at 40% off which put it into my price range and i jumped on it! I Have Def Tech BP6b's, a Velodyne 150 watt sub, a Sony UPB-X800 UHD Disc player, a Cambridge Center and Mirage rears. I've taken my system into the stratosphere! Highly recommend this amp. Setup was a breeze, and the sound will envelope you regardless if its 2-channel or Blu-rays

This is a great AV receiver for under $1k. This Yamaha Rx-A880 really brought life back my music and made my Old Polk speakers come alive. Lots of connectivity and the built in wifi and bluetooth made connecting devices and streaming apps very easy. The set up of this receiver was pretty simple with a remote & using the ARC connection to my TV. But nearly impossible to do without a remote. Unlike some of my older stereos which allowed for setup without a remote. I like using the smart phone app to run it. My favorite things about the RX-A880 is the sound. It has great imaging and very clear production. It has the ability to bypass the digital processing if desired and deliver the pure sound source. I bought this to to replace my home theater and movies have never sounded so good. My preferred use is for music and I have found myself listening all my favorite music again because it has brought new life to it. Overall, I can’t complain much about this receiver. It preforms great & is very tune able. I wish I could have the Stereo send signal to the Sub while using 2 channel stereo, But it won’t unless you adjust your crossover as using small speakers. Which I eventually did even though I have large speakers producing bass at 28hz. So it seems silly to not let my large speakers receive full range and add the sub in as a sprinkle to enhance the music. In the end, my stereo sounds better with my crossover set at 120 for my large front speakers and use my SVS sub to carry the lows. This receiver has plenty of power and gets loud. But if I was to buy again. I would go a mode up for a little more headroom.

This receiver has more power than I expected, I had a top of the line Pioneer Elite receiver which was 7 years old and was a great product that I had a hard time replacing. I bought another Elite Pioneer which died within 6 months of purchase and it was not even close to the performance of my old unit. Since my unit was under warranty my BestBuy associate was able to land me the Yamaha, wow was I impressed first off it has a much smaller footprint compared to other receivers I have had in the past. Great sound, all of the latest codecs and good looks. This is a must buy, if your looking for a receiver in this price range, this is hands down the best product out there. Go out and buy this thing you wont be sorry!

After researching multiple receivers, I upgraded to the Yamaha RXA880 and an happy with my decision. This receiver is easy to setup and configure, has 8 sets of presets and can be controlled via the Yamaha Controller application. We can turn the receiver on and off, change input sources, change settings and the volume from our iPhones and iPads, The inputs and presets (called Scenes) can be easily renamed, which allows you to switch to input sources using a name (i.e. BD, Cable, Game, Apple TV) rather than a number (1-8.) The documentation in the box is brief and I recommend downloading the complete manual from Yamaha which includes information on the Yamaha applications and more setting information. https://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/rx-a880_u/downloads.html

Purchased to replace an older receiver and have been very pleased with it. Pushes my Bowers and Wilkins 600 series fronts, rear surrounds, center channel and sub as well as two presence speakers very well. Plenty of HDMI input ports. More than enough to connect all of my home theater components. The Bluetooth feature is a big plus and the wi-fi connectivity to my home network is solid. Airplay works flawlessly over this connection. The overall sound quality exceeded my expectations. Using the included YPAO speaker calibration microphone it was simple to optimize my sound stage. This receiver has great features and the result in my home environment is awesome.

I had an Elite and then the 670 Aventage (hit by lightning after just a year) when the Elite has the infamous error that Pioneer didn’t step up to cover. Decided to step up to this one to replace it the lightning damaged unit and couldn’t be happier. Not much of a music audiophile so can’t really vouch for that side but the movie/gaming sound is excellent even on my 5.1 speaker system. Only thing that I think is a drawback is the remote. Can’t select an input directly - have to scroll. Also a little work on setup trying to change connections (one gaming system still was a component hook up - assigning audio and video to that channel was a bit of a hassle). Minimal complaints compared to the quality sound.

I got this receiver to upgrade the old one that I've had for about 12 years which was also a Yamaha, that old receiver started to have issues after all these years so I'd say it last a reasonable time. In my case installing the new receiver was easy since I only had to reconnect the existing wiring, set it up took about 3 hours including unpacking and testing all speakers. I was expecting the unit to have like an app to play Spotify directly, but instead, you need to play Spotify on your phone and connect it wirelessly to the receiver to play music. Sor far, no problems with this unit.

Under $1000. You wont be disappointed. Im running 2 sets of Mtx floor standing speakers. 15's and 12's. Run it in biamp. Both zones come on together. Wow incredible sound. The Bluetooth connects with anything. I have HDMI out going to a 82' Samsung tv. I have barely scratch the surface of this receiver. But I'm happy with it. Best buy did everything right on the Purchase. Had it shipped right to my front door. Free.

Bought this unit to replace a 7-year old Sony A/V receiver that had only 2 HDMI inputs. This was quite limiting when trying to run a TV, VCR/DVD, BluRay, WII, Xbox, Switch through a common receiver. This Yamaha really fit the bill well with 7 HDMI inputs (and 2 outs), plus has the bonus of MusicCast, and control via a smartphone app (in addition to standard remote). Sound is awesome, and configuration was easy.

I purchased this for the audio processing for voice. Often TV shows and movies have sound tracks that are difficult to hear the voice track. This system not only allows you to separate and increase dB on voice track but has presence speakers that allow voice tracks to either go to higher placed speakers (facing audience) OR overhead. Treehis dramatically helps hearing challenge people. In addition, this model allows up to 8 locations to be sampled ro fine tune how the speaker system works. So common viewing positions are optimized. Many systems only sample for 1 location, sub optimizing the audience's experience. Rhis also provides 8 programmed settings for source, speakers, erc for single click accessing. Great system, a little pricy but after using for a month well worth it

This receiver does everything I could want. My system is set up with a projector in the middle with 2 32 in on each side. This receiver allows me to run 5 speaker surround with Dolby atoms and up to 2 subwoofers, as well as 2 secondary speakers in another room. I have both my small tv on digital optical cords and can flip between the three of them. I can also play music with airplay/Bluetooth/etc and switch the video outputs to play whichever output I would like weather that’s cable, video games, or my fire stick. The system works perfectly and I love it.

This was an upgrade from an older non 4k capable model. It has all of the great features Yamaha is known for, along with ease of use and sound that just makes you want to listen to great music all day, along with thew Dolby Atmos sound, that makes it feel like you are in the middle of the action yourself.

So far I am using my receiver as a hdmi switcher between all of my devices. The harmony elite works wonderful with it. Only speakers I have attached are outdoor defted speakers which are extremely loud and powerful. Knowing can only go 3/4 volume or less because they will wake all of the neighbors I know Themis receiver packs a punch.

This was my second yamaha receiver. After upgrading to a 4k tv, I did a lot of research and was looking for one to pass 4k content to my tv. Connections:TIVO DVR, Roku, FireTv. When all were connected to the receiver I had issues of needing to switch from either the Roku or the Firestick to just watch programming through the Tivo. Then sometimes the receiver would auto switch to another device while watching. Very frustrating. The second thing is the remote design. No dedicated input buttons like my older model. Had a cheap feel to it. The Pros: I did enjoy the yamaha app to control the sound outputs. There was a definite increase of sound to my speakers that sounded amazing. Have 7.1 set up of mixed speakers as I am gradually upgrading to Klipsch. Currently running 3 klipsch, 2 cerwin vega, 2 sony bookshelf and 1 yamaha sub. Because of my connection issues, I decided to connect all my hdmi connections directly to my tv and I was able to enjoy without the auto switching. Because of the high ticket cost I did not see this worth keeping. So I returned it and resumed using my older model with no problems.
