Rushmore [DVD] [1998]

  • SKU: 3651195
  • Release Date: 06/29/1999
  • Rating: R
Wes Anderson's sophomore effort, Rushmore, comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are neither subtitles nor closed-captions on this release, and supplemental materials are limited to a theatrical trailer. This disc does a fine job presenting the film, but anyone wishing to take a deeper look at the film would do well with the more expensive, extras-laden Criterion version.

Synopsis

Rushmore
After the highly acclaimed independent film Bottle Rocket, director Wes Anderson followed up with a quirky Touchstone Studios film entitled Rushmore. Written by Anderson and friend Owen Wilson (an actor in Armageddon and Anaconda), they created the story of Max Fischer, a highly eccentric 15-year-old boy who attends the tenth grade at Rushmore Academy. Played by Jason Schwartzman (Talia Shire's son and Francis Ford Coppola's nephew), Max is a poor student with big dreams and a love of extracurricular activities. Max is editor of the school newspaper and yearbook, president of the chess, astronomy, French, and German clubs, captain of the fencing team, and director of the school play. Max is also a compulsive liar, telling everyone that his barber father (Seymour Cassel) is really a brain surgeon. Suddenly Max falls in love with Miss Cross (Olivia Williams), a first-grade teacher at the school. He also makes a new friend in business tycoon Mr. Blume (Bill Murray), an eccentric millionaire who also loves Miss Cross. The love triangle heats up as Max refuses to believe that his age has anything to do with Miss Cross refusing his romantic advances. Also Max's scheme to erect an aquarium on the school baseball diamond gets him booted out of Rushmore Academy. As his life crumbles around him, he is forced to grow up and accept the consequences of his actions and his lies. He throws himself more into his extracurricular activities, hoping to redeem himself by staging the most ambitious school play ever attempted. ~ Arthur Borman, Rovi

If you don't already know, this film is a masterpiece. The second film from director WES ANDERSON has been praised by critics and hundreds of new moviemakers for almost a decade. CRITERION COLLECTION brings this favorite comedy home. Criterion incorporates perfect pakaging, abundant extra features and the library of work from some of the most inspired and creative director's speaks for itself. I highly recomend this two-disc set but with an added heads up. 1998 was the year this movie was released. 2008 marks the 10th anniversary. It has'nt been announced but there could be a commemerative release that could include cast reunion interviews or a follow up documentary. If you love RUSHMORE you'll want this version. I own this dvd and I'm still waiting for the 10th anniversary edition.

If you have any kind of sense of humor, you will love this movie. If you haven't seen it, don't even bother renting it. Just go ahead and buy it. The only problem is that the Blu Ray disc won't play on all PS3s. My boyfriend and I both have PS3 Slims; his a newer model, and mine is an older one that I bought refurbished. One of us has more GB than the other, but I forget which is which and I'm not sure that's even related. For whatever reason, mine will play the Blu Ray and his won't. If the Playstation 3 is your only source for a Blu Ray player, you might want to get the DVD instead. Or, better yet, just go ahead and buy a cheap Blu Ray player because there are a lot of discs that won't play on a PS3 for some reason.

Just so you know, this isn't just the widescreen version, it's the Criterion Edition and has a lot of bonuses and that's why it's so expensive (although it is still to expensive even for the special edition). Rushmore is one of the greatest comedies and could be the greatest Indie Comedy. Great acting, great writing, great cinematography, and one of the best soundtracks ever. The Criterion Edition gives a lot of great extras and is worth the extra money if you love Wes Anderson movies.

Max Fischer is a student at Rushmore Academy who cares far more about his endless extra-cirricular activites than he does his grades. His life is turned upside down when both he and a friend (an adult father of his classmate) fall in love with a new teacher at the school and find themselves a battle for the woman's affections. Hilarious and heartfelt, Rushmore is definitely a winner.

The transfer isn't always perfect, but the movie, features, and artwork are. I love collecting Wes Anderson films as even the case looks like something that belongs on a book shelf for classic books. Sic Transit Gloria!

Great movie. Very dry but very funny humor. Jason Schwartzman does an excellent job portraying his characters eccentric, caring, ambitious but not bright qualities.

I really enjoyed this early Wes Anderson film. It is fun to watch Bill Murray in this one.
