I'll start by saying that this controller is a must-have for Gear VR owners. If you were on the fence about getting a Gear VR, then this controller will more than make it worth your while. Now here's a more detailed breakdown.. The Good: This controller makes navigating through menus much more convenient since it acts like a laser pointer or wii remote. Having virtual models of the controller or what it represents in a game is also super cool. Games that use the controller are made much the better for it, as the natural "point and shoot" mechanics feel so immersive, and there are new apps arriving pretty much daily. The Bad: There is no positional tracking of the controller, only rotational and tilt tracking. Also there is no vibration at all to simulate actions in VR (i.e. shooting a gun). Together, these limit the final immersive feeling of the VR controller. The batteries are also not rechargeable, which I would normally expect from an official Samsung accessory. Finally, you will have to recenter your controller a lot in-app, but it's a single button press process, so you can pretty much ignore this problem. Final Verdict: (See above) Although this controller is not perfect, I'd rate it a 10/10 for what it is, and the fact that mobile VR is still a new and limited technology at the moment. For $40 this is a no-brainer purchase

Adds a fun dynamic, but dissappointing

I've had my Gear VR for about a month before the controller launched, so I've been playing with a GameSir console style controller (similar to PS3) until I picked up my Samsung Gear VR Controller yesterday. The Gear VR Controller adds a point and shoot mechanism to games, which adds greatly to the level of fun and immersion. There is great potential here, especially with shooting games. Unfortunately, the controller is not based on absolute positioning. It's all relative to its starting position, and it gets out of sync quickly. I can't even finish a level without re-syncing several times in the middle of the game. Ergonomics are also lacking. There's not enough to hold on to. I've got what I consider average sized hands (I wear a large glove, not XXL or something) and my hand hurts after playing an exciting shooting game for about 45 minutes. Buttons... (plural, not singular!) why can't Gear VR have a joystick and buttons? I understand that they want to maintain the possibility of playing games without a controller, but the games will never evolve beyond shooters on rails without a thumbstick and buttons.

This controller is great for navigation and burning through videos. It feels great in your hand and the buttons and touch pad work great. It doesn't work with all the games, so if you're going to buy games, you better makes sure it's compatible first. Takes (2) - AAA batteries and is made specifically for Samsung compatible phones and the gear vr headset. All in all, it's a pretty neat little motion controller, I'll give it 4 stars. Seems like it would be a better fit at $19.99 though. But if you can afford it for what it is...go for it, I did.

I was expecting a hand control identical to the side control on the Gear VR headset. This is that and more. With the Gear VR and controller on, you see a laser pointer-like beam that moves with your hand. Pointer with your hand not quite right? Not a problem! Press and hold the return button on the Gear VR Controller and it recalibrates it's position. I bought a console type controller for my Gear VR, and thought this would be a nice option when the battery ran low on the Matrix controller. Instead this will be my primary choice! Iit's powered by two AAA batteries, so when power runs low, just replace them (I'll be using rechargeable batteries, but not having to plug a cord into this is very handy considering the size). The Gear VR Controller is a must have for any Gear VR user!

I have a 2nd Gen. headset that didn't come with a controller so, I had to go out and buy one. I bought a Steel Series Stratus XL which works great but has more features than I need. When I saw that the 3rd Gen. headset came with a controller, I knew that I just had to get one. I was out at my local BestBuy so I asked if they had the controller. Without checking the computer, which was right there, the Blue shirt told me no, they didn't carry it. I went home, checked my email and saw that I had an email from BB, I checked for the controller and there it was, in stock at the store that I had just left. So what did I do?? I bought it online from Target. So far this thing has handled everything I've thrown at it. My Stratus has now replaced my XBox controller on my PC.

I have the 2015 version of the Gear VR and have gone through about 3 different android controllers that claim to work with Gear VR. I was disappointed with each and every one of them. When Samsung announced that they were building a native controller I couldn't wait to be first in line. Upon receipt I jumped back into my Gear VR, which I must say was collecting a bit of dust, and am totally blown away by now having a controller that works the way it's supposed to (No more touching the side of the headset). The setup and use of the controller is intuitive and well thought out. This add on device has further cemented my love for my Samsung products and has reignited the flame between myself and my Gear VR....Thanks Samsung.

Anyone with a Gear VR needs this controller. The price is excellent, and it works great. The reason that it is not 5 stars is because the connection process is sometimes an issue. I have to attempt to connect every time and it does not allow this process to occur while you are using the VR, it must be done prior. Additionally, it usually takes 2 or 3 attempts to get it to connect. But once connected it works great and makes using the Gear VR so much easier.

I originally bought this more my gf for her gear vr (2016 version). She use to use a gamp pad but this work so much better. It acts as essentially a pointer in vr ‌space. Unfortunately it doesn't have positional tracking, so you have an object that floats next to you that can mimic any rotational tracking. Have only had a few hickups with it picking up gestures. Other than that works great! (We reccomend AltSpace for social interactions)
