    Synopsis

    Seven
Director David Fincher's dark, stylish thriller ranks as one of the decade's most influential box-office successes. Set in a hellish vision of a New York-like city, where it is always raining and the air crackles with impending death, the film concerns Det. William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), a homicide specialist just one week from a well-deserved retirement. Every minute of his 32 years on the job is evident in Somerset's worn, exhausted face, and his soul aches with the pain that can only come from having seen and felt far too much. But Somerset's retirement must wait for one last case, for which he is teamed with young hotshot David Mills (Brad Pitt), the fiery detective set to replace him at the end of the week. Mills has talked his reluctant wife, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), into moving to the big city so that he can tackle important cases, but his first and Somerset's last are more than either man has bargained for. A diabolical serial killer is staging grisly murders, choosing victims representing the seven deadly sins. First, an obese man is forced to eat until his stomach ruptures to represent gluttony, then a wealthy defense lawyer is made to cut off a pound of his own flesh as penance for greed. Somerset initially refuses to take the case, realizing that there will be five more murders, ghastly sermons about lust, sloth, pride, wrath, and envy presented by a madman to a sinful world. Somerset is correct, and something within him cannot let the case go, forcing the weary detective to team with Mills and see the case to its almost unspeakably horrible conclusion. The moody photography is by Darius Khondji; the nauseatingly vivid special effects are by makeup artist Rob Bottin, best known for more fantasy-oriented work in films like The Howling (1981). ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Seven has been around for many years, so I'll spare you the movie review and focus on the disc itself. In my opinion, this Blu-ray upgrade is well worth the price. Lines are crisp and clear, color is well saturated and everything just looks richer than on DVD. Of course, this is a dark and bleak film; the cinematography reflects that so don't expect colors to "pop" the way some films do. I have too many movies to upgrade my entire collection to Blu-ray, but some are worthy of the re-dip and this is surely one of them. So go pop some popcorn, grab a soda, and settle in for movie night!

Fincher's first film may have been the forgettable "Alien 3," but I've always considered this to be his first real film. The film was his from beginning to end. The dark story is helped by great cinematography and acting, and from beginning to end this film draws you in. It's tough to say what Fincher's best work is, but this film holds up after nearly 20 years, and I know it will live up to another 20. The Blu-ray transfer looks great, and the extras are doable for a disc I paid $7.99 for. Overall, a good buy.

I bought a copy from Best Buy last week. Opened it up, put it in the Blu Ray player, it didn't load, just a black screen. I have the latest firmware on my Samsung. I let it sit there for 10 minutes...still didn't load. Put it in my PS3 and it displays "Invalid Disc". Figured..."Oh ok, maybe it's just a bad copy?" Exchanged it for another one, brought it home...guess what...same thing. Tried it in another Blu Ray player and no go. I hope they will take this back for a full refund since it's been opened.

This here is probably my favorite movie all-time, if I really had to choose. Not only does the film keep you on the edge of your seat, it is a deep and symbolic as any movie you'll come across. It captures Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey at their best, especially Spacey who turns in his greatest acting performance as the troubled, clandestine antagonist. He is everything you want in a villain. Perfect choice for a Halloween movie watch and you cannot beat the 3.99 price tag!

This is a movie that deals with the bad side of humanity. This is a well written & executed film. Morgan Freeman is superb in this movie, backed up by Brad Pitt. The movie is about a killer of people, who he believes have committed on of the Bibles seven deadly sins. Morgan & Brad are on the trail of this psychopath. The ending is totally unexpected & gut wrenching. The Blu-Ray transfer of this movie blows the DVD away. This is a definite worthwhile upgrade.

Superior acting. Thrilling suspense. True to life effects. This is hands down in a class of its own. Ultra realistic scenes & the accompanying score make this flick an edge of your seat watch......even if you've seen it a dozen times!! This movie should be required watching for all filmmakers & actors. It'd be hard to top this movie, but would love someone to pick up the challenge. I'm still waiting for a sequel or a spin off

I've owned several previous incantations of this movie, but NEVER has the picture and sound been brought to full and complete life as it has been with the superb Blu-Ray release. By itself, SEVEN is hands-down easily one of the very best deviant crime dramas ever put on celluloid... but this new Digibook version is something that belongs on EVERY serious film collector's list!

Just re-watched this thriller with our teenage children. It had been long enough that neither my wife nor I had a clear memory of the film so it was quite suspenseful for everyone. Some of the scenes were filmed in very low light so you really need to pay attention to catch some of the important details even when watched in a dark room on a plasma. We have found that given enough time between viewings, an old movie can seem new again.
