"I've never played any of the previous Civilization installments but gave this one a try based on the demo. The game itself is incredible. The graphics are cartoonish and the "dialog" (which consists of nothing more than spoken jibberish whenever you highlight an action) is incessant and aggrivating, but the actual gameplay is very addictive. It is a turn-based strategy game and the basic premise is to dominate the world through technological advancement, cultural superiority, financial gain, or just plain brute force. The levels of difficulty range from too simple to nearly impossible and everything in between. The AI is fair for the most part except that as the difficulty rises, the computer tends to compensate for skill by giving itself unfair advantages, like expanding it's cities quicker than is normally possible. Also, the AI has the ability to demand money and technologies from you in exchange for peace while the player does not, something that will hopefully be addressed in a future patch.
For anyone that is a fan of strategy games, turn-based or even real time, this game is a must have."

If you like Axis and Allies or Risk, you will enjoy this game. You can pick one of many historical leaders from many different civilizations or countries. There are 5 different levels ranging from easy/tutorial to hard. Each level has 4 different ways to win the game. The game doesn't take very long (compared to video games) to play. You can play the tutorial level in about 2 to 3 hours. As you progress to each level, it gets harder and more challenging.
I would say the thing that is not so great is that there are only about 4 levels and about 4 different ways to win. You can only play this game 16 times. However, you can replay each level and try to win each way with many different people. Another feature that isn't so great is this is only a 1 player game. There is an online feature to play with multi-players.
If you have a limited budget for video games, this is a good game!

This is a good game. Love the strategy and thought behind it but it is WAY too short. It would have been nice if they had more to it because within a couple hours this game is complete.
The game is basically like Risk. The goal is global domnination and you are like God to the citizens. You tell them what to do, what to build, who to fight and they do it. You have the options of changing the way you want to rule i.e. democracy, monarchy, diety, etc.
One good point with the game being so short is that you can replay in different modes with different characters, strengths, etc.., and you can keep changing things up to find out new ways for global domination.
All it all, we are enjoying playing this game and hope that Sid Meier will come up with a longer version for the gaming consoles soon.

I have never played any of the civilization games and to tell the truth I never know anything about Sid. I downloaded the game off the Playstation network and was hooked once I finished my first turn.
The concept is simple, the game play is simple, but in some odd way it gives some entertaining goals. The games offer four different ways to win and all four will take some good thinking on your part. You can make money, or get all of the greatest people in history, or lead your civilization to space, or just beat up every one until you’re the last man standing.
I do not want to say to much but I do believe if you want something different, this is a game that should be added to your collection.

If you love history and games that you start from scratch you need this game. World domination and rewriting history while you play. I give this game 4 stars because the cons in this game is the game is too short and you only battle against 4 enemys. I love that the game has a different map every time you play and the all difficulties are great and challenging, they need to come out with another one that has more enemys during game play or give you the choice of 4-16 that would be awesome. And add more historical leaders!

I was probably the first person to buy this game, being a big fan of the Civilization series. I popped the game in and was eager to start playing. At first, I was very impressed. The concept of the army has finally hit home and there is no limit to your armed forces. The controls were intuitive and easy...but by the time I got to the end game, I had found some major issues with the game.
In past games, you could upgrade old military units, for a price, to get modern units; not so in this game. The ONLY way to upgrade is if you build Leonardo's Workshop and then you can only upgrade those units you already have with the technology that you have already researched. If you fail to build this first, your Riflemen are stuck to share their Barracks with old Warriors and Horsemen. A second big problem I had was when I finally achieved nuclear technology and built the Manhattan project, I was able to have just a single nuclear device. Just one? To that end, it is more of a passive defensive decision than an offensive one. And finally, I was peeved when yet another installment of this game only permits a limited number of turns. By 2050, if you haven't won yet, the game decided it for you.
There are many things that have improved in this version of Civilizations, but there are many more that are needed to get close to its potential. I would not recommend a friend to pay $60 for this game....just wait for the inevitable next one. As for me....I've already been trying to resell it.

I've played every Civilization since the first one. In fact I believe it should be in every Middle School classroom. That said:
There are things I don't like about this one. I can't customize the game as I'd like. The maps are uniformally too small. And the showing of the building of the Wonders has been eliminated. The new gifts from the Phoneicians is OK. But kind of silly.
Fireaxis has promised a weekly game. I did the first one and didn't like the fact that I couldn't save it. It took me several hours to complete and I don't really always have hours to play a game.
In previous versions each of the advisors actually spoke in the language of the leader. This all seems gibberish. And some of the cartoon advisors, and leaders are a bit, well, cartoony.
Overall it's a good port. I realize there are limitations with the graphics of the PS3 system. It takes a lot of memory. But if games like Assassins Creed can make Kirsten Bell recognizeable, then so should a game like this. Yes it's memory consuming for each character to speak in language and the game systems have limited hard drive space for this type of file.
It's Civ. It's replayable. Hopefully the scenarios will add some life. And hopefully updates will allow for different resolution maps with more players.
