    Synopsis

    Sinister
A struggling true-crime novelist stumbles into a grim supernatural mystery that threatens the lives of his entire family in this nightmarish horror yarn from director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still). Ellison (Ethan Hawke) is seeking inspiration for his latest book when he moves his wife and children into a home where an entire family perished under gruesome circumstances. Terror soon hits closer to home, however, when the writer discovers a box of old family movies in the attic of his new house, and watches in horror as images of various families being murdered flicker before his eyes. Now the deeper Ellison investigates the disturbing case, the more he begins to fear he has stirred an ancient evil that won't rest until it has claimed his entire family. Vincent D'Onofrio and James Ransone co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The best horror movie in years

I'm not a real big fan of horror movies. Of late I've found them all to be boring and predictable. I heard some buzz about Sinister so I thought I would check it out just to see what all the fuss was about. I will come right out and say this, Sinister is the scariest movie I have ever seen. Granted I have not seen every single horror movie, but I've seen a good few. This movie is effective on many levels and is just flat out creepy and disturbing. It has it's jump scares, but they aren't gimmicky, they are actually scary. The acting is fantastic, the imagery is amazing, the score on it's own part is scary. I was really refreshed (and scared to death) after watching this movie because I finally watched a horror movie that did what horror movies are supposed to do, make me scared. PQ: Nothing to complain about here, everything looked top notch, black levels were great, blu-ray in top form AQ: AMAZING. The audio in this movie really contributes to the film and it all sounds amazing. My room was literally shacking, this movie will test the limits of your sound system Extras: There are two audio commentary tracks and two features as well as some deleted scenes. While the features were a fun quick watch, I wish that they would have included more on the making of the movie itself. But, there are features here and they are worth watching Verdict: If you like horror movies, get this movie. This is the best movie of that genre that I've seen in a long time. I really wish more movies would take new and different approaches like this one. The blu-ray supports great audio and picture quality and gives you a nice medium pizza of extras. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

      A family styled fright film.

I enjoyed this film. It did have a couple of well resolved characters and that was a plus. But except for sepia toned children, and unusual aspects of those children with regard to the house and a "swing out back", I was hoping for more. To me, it was as though the same scene was being played over and over. While the struggle with his writing and the lead character's lack of clarity regarding his experiencing strange events at the home seemed to me to be at times nearly tactile, this alone does not a horror movie make. This was more of a spooky character study with mysteries and questions. Questions like: how does an item that is destroyed and/or engulfed in flames suddenly reappear? But does it really happen or is it all a product of the overworked author's alcohol soaked brain? Still, a question and still a mystery. So the viewer is enticed to find out more. I will submit that having child aged actors in a "dark" film containing imagery of implied violence that may or may not have involved those young characters is likely the aspect that crossed the PG-13/R line. That aspect leaves a tough row to hoe in search of the magical PG-13 rating. But from an adult point of view, the film as a whole is PG-13 fare. If the studios are still trying to output PG-13 material in order to "gain a larger audience", then I would wager that there was much disappointment with the R rating. Just my opinion, folks.

It's gotten quite tiresome with the mass-run of supernatural, stuck-in-a-house films over the past 15 years. (In fact, I had heard Sinister was good, but when I went to purchase, I could only think of Insidious for the first 15 minutes). In the age of Sinister, Insidious, Oculus, Conjuring, and Hauntings in... The original Sinister is quite good. It plays more on tension than actual gore (although there are a few "quick flash" scenes). It lets you form your own opinions along the way, feeding trickles of information to you on its trip to guide you to the ending, increasing your anxiousness along the way. To ensure it never gets too far out of hand, it adds one deputy who brings along some mild comedic relief- note that this comedic relief in no way detracts from the film, but rather, it's played honestly- a man using humor/ his nervousness being humorous in a very realistic manner, as a real person might do in such circumstances. While the reviews of Sinister 2 gives me little hope for the franchise, it's wonderful to see the original takes a lot of care to set itself apart from the rest of the supernatural/ house (done to death as studios attempt to limit budgets on the always risky horror genre) themed movies out there. Care was put into Sinister, not a cash-grab.

I first watched this by renting it, then months later, i bought it on bluray. The reason i bought this is because, i fell asleep in a few parts. the only problem was is that, they took long pauses between the suspense scenes. And plus, it was midnight when i watched my rental. But, this movie is really fun, there are a few jump scenes, and, the ghoul dude really scared me just by looking at it. If you see it on bluray, there is alot of bass you will definitely like while the suspense is going on. I liked the music they put in the movie, and it just fit right into the plot. and the scene, which is in the trailer, when he held the picture of the ghoul in front of the window, and put it down, you could see the ghoul in the bushes where he was holding it in front of. and, its funny because, i already knew that that was going to happen, and i still jumped because of the beautiful loud sound it made when you saw it. If you haven't bought this, I'd buy it on bluray because of the sharp sounds.

I'm one of those people who does not think any movies are scary. I scoff at most horror films, but I was genuinely creeped out / anxious with this one. The movie itself is set in the 1960ish era, or around that time period. The opening on the disc is actually super creepy and weird, I knew it was going to be a great movie! It keeps you on the edge, and makes you want to continue watching. It has some jump scares, and some morbid scenes, but all in all its a great movie! This will definitely be one of my favorites, and I'm glad I snagged it with the sale price! Watching the movie, you'll have the same scary thoughts as I will! LOL.

My girlfriend at the time and me really enjoyed this movie. I liked it enough after renting it to buy it. It is a very spooky movie. I even loved the music score throughout. You will be sucked in by an interesting plot, yet a but far fetched. I must warn you that it is VERY graphic. Without giving anything away, there are videos of murder scenes that were filmed by the killer. These scenes are very realistic and graphic. I found some hard to watch and I don't get uneasy by horror movies often. I would NOt recommend for younger viewers, though I don't remember seeing any nudity and bad language was low I believe. Enjoy!

I'm a huge Supernatural movie fan. Ghosts and biblical horror movies I really enjoy with the occasional UFO ones too. But I really look for the movies that have a good story that makes sense and not only the "jump scare" type. SINISTER was this type of movie. From the very opening scene the director sets the tone of creepiness. Honestly, it dropped my jaws and gave me the feeling that I was in for a movie that was going to tug at strings that weren't tugged at before in a horror film. I loved this movie and recommend it to those who like the mystery/horror genre. Love it love it love it

Nice breath of fresh air for the horror genre. It didn't have much in your face scare tactics. This movie used a very subtle sound track, and often silence, then they frequently put you in compete dark. And you can get creeped out, just by what your imagination does to you. Good story, not entirely original, but it still certainly entertained me. Excellent acting. Cool antagonist, although he looks like the "Saw" doll without his makeup. Not the best horror movie ever, but it's certainly close to the top especially by today's standards.
