Great form factor
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendOk 1 regret is that I bought this at 1149(on the first day:( ) Bought this for the form factor, at 16.4 inches this will fit in a 15.4 inch laptop bag. But is actually shorter than most 15.4 inch laptop (receded hing reduces the height of the screen when opened). This had been the major reason I never went for those 17 in laptops. Screen resolution is nearly perfect for reading and movies, games and vista. Love the fact that I can keep the side bar always on top and still have a wide screen like screen real estate left. would have loved it if it were 1000 px height, but then that would sacrifice text readability. Color range is very vibrant. though the screen is bright it does not get overly bright at max brightness. this screen has no issues at any viewing angles, loved it. CPU is fast enough, you would not need a faster CPU unless u are into video encoding (you will not find the fastest CPU all that faster than this). 3 GB ram the max 32 bit vista supports. Some laptops have 4 GB 64 bit vista, but I do not understand what advantage that gets as most 64 bit software consumes more ram. GPU is a lower end discrete graphics. Its fast enough to run most games at a mid range setting. It will not be able to run the latest games at max setting at this resolution screen. They really should have gone for some thing that is twice as fast as this. No regrets for me as it plays AgeOfEmp at mid setting and racing games at near max setting. The screen resolution really helps here. Keyboard is good, but different, I liked it. Mouse pad is sensitive even if my fingers were wet. And YES IT DOES HAVE VERTICAL SCROLL. Though it takes some time getting used to not having a ridged to mark it. Sound quality was very good on the headphones, no noise detected. Would have loved to have a 5 in one, or 9 in one card reader. But given that I always transfer my files from the cameras through usb. I did not see an issue with this. Build feels sturdy, the palm rest area has a little vertical flex (not the frame, just that you can feel the flex when pushing down with the thumb). and gets warm in this region (hard drive directly beneath it). This is a good all round laptop tuned towards document reading, movies and decent gaming. I have to admit the best all round laptop rt now in bestbuy close to this price is the asus G50Vm-X1 @ $1,249.99[ 9700GPU with 2.gz CPU]. This to had a good form factor, the only reason that lost was because of the screen at 7xx X 13xx it is way too narrow for reading documents (90% of the work load)

nice
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendVista rating=4.6 This is my first laptop, so bear with me. The weight seems kind of heavy. It is right around 6 or 7 pounds. I figured it was the battery, but when removed it is not much lighter. On startup, very sssllloooww, there is about 75 processes running. It DOES NOT come with recovery disks. They are stored on a separate partition on the hard drive. There is an icon that pops up every once in a while reminding you to make the disks and there is a Vaio support shortcut on the screen. Do it as soon as possible. The screen does look very good, but when playing dvds it is washed out. When connected via hdmi cable to my hdtv, the quality on the screen drops noticeably. The picture is still nice, but the edges of objects on the screen become blurred. Sony knows of an issue when trying to play adobe flash videos, such as ones on youtube, in full screen. They say to just update your version of flash, but that doesn't work. To fix the problem, right click on the video, go to setting and turn off hardware acceleration.I really like the spacing of the keys on the keyboard. It is a lot easier to use than other laptops with there keys so close together that you press a and s at the same time. The green light looks pretty cool when turned on and it has a nice finish to it that seems to change from a silver to copperish color when rotated. A couple of leds are on the base and above the screen indicating when you are connected to the internet, if the battery is charging, and when the camera is on. Battery life is decent. There is an indicator on the taskbar. I really like how there is a switch to turn on the wireless connection. There is a program that pops up when turned on and the software included to connect to a wireless network in super easy to use; very beginner friendly. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a laptop for everyday use and the screen size makes it perfect for cad work and photoshop.

Decent Computer
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendOverall a good computer. Two things really bother me with this computer though. First, no centrino? With the huge screen and the other multimedia features, this thing really needs all the help it can get to eek out all the power it can from the battery. Which is the other thing. Why the puny battery? Battery life is only 2 1/2 hours. If you're watching a movie, you may make it to the end before the battery craps out. You could save a lot more battery if you could turn the brightness down more, but you can't. Also, while I'm on the negative, the screen is nice bright and clear, but why the 1080P resolution if there is no Blu-Ray drive? Overkill in my opinion. The other bad thing about the screen is that it flexes a lot if you try to open or close it by grasping the corners. There really needs to be a secondary cover over the screen so that you can't accidentally damage the screen by pressing on it. My last real gripe is with the power connector where you plug it into the power adapter. The plastic around it flexes quite a bit. OK, no more griping. The processor is great and the 3GB of memory make it run Vista quite well. The bluetooth is also a nice feature because I have an iPAQ and a bluetooth phone that I can swap files with. Overall for the $999 that I paid for it, it was a bargain, but if you can get the 140 version of this computer, get that because it has the centrino processor. You also might think about getting a spare battery or the larger capacity battery if you can afford the $200+ dollars that you'll have to shell out for it (Sony accessories are expensive).

Defect
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendAs mentioned, the unit came with a defective wireless card. After hitting 3000ms ping with WoW and 30% Packet loss on other games I figured something was up (tested at multiple locations on multiple networks). After running diagnostics on the computer, the wireless card AND the motherboard Failed several tests. Will be exchanging this 2 week old laptop at bestbuy for a replacement. Overall Game performance wasn't what I expected it to be. It seemed to have framerate issues on all games such as WC3 and wow even when not running at high settings. This could be due to the awkward(rare) resolution of 1600x900 (or the failing motherboard...). After spending about 4 months tossing around the ones I felt really excelled in quality and power (gateway FX, Asus GS1-2, HP SE, etc) I chose this one. This one was not only a very well designed laptop it was priced very well it has a stunning CPU paired with a decent mobile GPU and a beautiful 1600x900 screen. I still have yet to decide if i will buy this one again and risk the chance that the poor game performance was a fluke or if I should just upgrade to the new Gateway FX with the 9800gts. A note to buyers: This laptop is End Of Life in the public BBY stores and is not on display. It has been replaced with the sony fw140 model. It is identical (case, cpu, screen, hdd) EXCEPT the 140 model does NOT have the hd 3470 GPU as It has been downgraded to an intel 4500.

This thing truly rocks!
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI bought this machine after seeing a great sale price of $999.99 and two screwed up orders and terrible customer service trying to buy a Dell Studio 17 direct from Dell. That brought me to doing some more research and I am glad things went the way did, otherwise I wouldn't have found this. This machine is very fast, as I am a freelance designer and desktop audio producer and I always push my machines to their limits. The VAIO has no problems keeping up at all. The screen is crisp and offers nicely saturated colors. A unique thing about this machine is that it is considered a "big" laptop given it's 16.4" screen, but let me tell you, the way this things is built (both in weight and body construction) makes it feel extremely compact. (Very similar to my MacBook actually) Another great thing is that it actually can be used as a "laptop" meaning that it won't burn you. The machine does warm up, as all laptops well, but it is more than tolerable. As far as the keys go, they are nice and responsive and the touchpad is very sensitive and works better then a lot of others I've used. The only things about this machine I would change are the dated shortcut buttons (yes..the problems is that they are literally buttons!) and the slot load drive. In the end, these are negligible issues, as the rest of the machine is so great. The speakers do the trick, although they are a little weak and don't have as much of a spatial quality that I've found in other laptops. All in all, GET THIS MACHINE! It's worth every penny.

Awesome Laptop
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendIf you need a easy to use and light enough to carry around all day if necessary, this is the computer you should get. Also, if you basically need the computer for everyday uses and not really gaming, this is great. I know this product isn't the newest one out but it does the job. The only thing that I may want to change would be the blu-ray, what I mean by this is that it doesn't have blue-ray in the computer but I can work without it. While I was attending school, this was perfect for me. Since i'm pretty petite, I knew that I wouldn't be able to carry a big laptop with books. But this one fit me perfectly, not only was I able to carry this laptop in its lightweight case, I was able to carry my books at the same time without getting a back strain. Also, I was able to get online easily at school with the built in wireless and complete my projects which were on excel and papers on word. In summary, this would be a perfect gift or buy for someone who doesnt want to be lugging around a 20lbs of computer and who would be frequently carrying it around to places. Its easy to store and although it has a small screen, it really isnt bad. Its not like I'm squinting.

Not Bad But...
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI’ve always been happy with many of the VAIO line because they always seem to have just what I’m look for in terms of size, speed and quality. The screen size in terms of resolution [1600 x 900] gives me much needed space for graphic and design work and this has to be the best keyboard I’ve ever used with nicely spaced keys and a good feel and breaking point. The overall size and weight make the 16 inch plus screen just as portable as my 15 inch 1280 x 800. It runs cool and with relatively low fan noise. The only problem I have with this computer is the screen calibration or lack of. Blacks look dark gray. The screen has a very washed out look which is very disappointing to me because my VAIO 15 and 17 inch laptops had some of, if not the best out of the box screens that I’ve ever seen. I’m going to use a screen calibration tool to see if I can make this good laptop better but if you are graphic artist or work with photo and video to any real degree the screen may cause you to go elsewhere. Good for basic computing.
