Buy only if interested in playing music

I purchased (and will be returning) two SRSZR5 speakers. I have no issue with the sound however the setup is confusing and involves many steps. After setup it still takes several steps to send music to them depending on what you want to do. They did not work well with my Sony soundbar as satellite speakers for my TV. Because my Sony sound bar (HT ST5000) has the wireless sound built in I had to use multi room instead of wireless surround to connect all wirelessly. However I did not find this out until after the fact. Although they are listed as compatible with my system, they are not 100% compatible. When hooked up, the sound and video from my TV would not sync up and there is no way to adjust it when in multi room mode. (Note: They may work better with other Sony soundbars if they are wireless surround capable or if directly hooked to the TV, but I bought them for their wireless capability.) Now for the set up headache: This is based on set up with a Samsung S7 Edge phone (android). You are limited in that you really need to use the SongPal (Music Center App) The instruction sheet says that you can hook to your soundbar manually but it is very difficult to figure out and was not an easy process. I never did get it to fully work without using the SongPal app. I was able to play from google music using my home network after setting up my wireless multiroom in the SongPal App. Within the Song Pal app you can set up groups. I set up 3 different groups. One for multiroom wireless with the 2 speakers and my soundbar (music only). Another for multiroom wireless with just the two SRSZR5 speakers. Then in order to have the speakers play together in bluetooth mode you must pair them in stereo mode which is another wacky set up as the instructions are not very clear on how to continue setting up with your phone after pairing the speakers together. If you are a google music person it is fairly easy to cast from your phone in bluetooth mode once you figure out how. You have to set up from the Song Pal app then also set up in google play music. If you try to connect by bluetooth without using the app you will just give yourself major headaches. If you want your sound to also go through your soundbar when using bluetooth you have to go in to the soundbar settings and set the sound bar to recieve, not transmit the bluetooth signal...that is unless you have a smart TV and are broadcasting directly from the TV then the setup must be transmit. THEN, if you want to use another app, say Apple Music, you have to pair your phone to the speaker that you initially set up the stereo bluetooth on. This is the only way to play music apps other than what is compatible with Google Play Music. I suppose if you are only interested in playing music through one speaker it would be less of a set up headache. Not sure how they would work if you have Google Home with google assistant - they are supposed to be compatible. My bottom line take is that since they do not work well as surround speakers (at least on my system)..which makes them only useful for music..it makes sense to look at the many less expensive speakers that will hook up much easier to your phone and play from all apps with out going back and forth in the SongPal app AND they will sound just as good.

Currently these outstanding compact versatile speakers are on sale for $99 a piece. Which is a phenomenal deal considering their capabilities along with their original price point of $199 a piece. I had purchased these speakers specifically for use with my Sony HTNT5 Soundbar, and these versatile compact speakers exceeded my expectations exponentially!!!! The soundbar pairing/setup was easy, so long as your soundbar has the ARC feature. If so, then all there is to it is for you to run a solid high-end HDMI cable (AudioQuest Carbon in my case.) from the soundbars ARC output to the televisions ARC input. Thus making everything run through the soundbar. There are numerous other ways to accomplish this, but if your television doesn't have an ARC HDMI input than it's going to be a bit more complex to setup. Anyways.... I have these Sony speakers working hard as my back left & right speakers. And they excel at this role without a doubt. As for the Speakers themselves; they have multiple capabilities from Bluetooth to multi-room play capabilities. These Sony speakers also have great range & depth in sound output. (These speakers are not expensive high-end speakers, however they do preform as a close second to these high-end speakers.) I would highly recommend these to anyone with Sony products and especially a Sony HDTV & accompanying soundbar. These Sony products when properly combined creates an outstanding minimalist look along with the capabilities to complete the encapsulation illusion of surround sound without breaking the bank. (Like you would on an expensive high-end stereo equipment setup.) I would recommend this product to anyone! It is well built as well as being an outstanding compact speaker. And at its current sale price you honestly cannot beat this deal!...

I purchased two of these, and really like the speakers. I paired with my HT-NT5 soundbar to form a wireless surround sound set up that would be hard to achieve with wires. The sound for this is really great, and adds a nice dimension to everyday TV watching. It is not nearly as solid as true surround e.g. 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or atmos setup. The speakers also sound great standalone or in stereo mode in a Google Cast setup. In stereo, they beat Bose SoundTouch 20 head to head (I have several). The highs are phenomenal and fill a room. The main issue I have with the devices is the delay that is introduced by Sony when playing in surround mode. This may not seem like a big deal, but when creating a group of speakers in Google Cast, this makes them off by 1-2 seconds. And since it is a delay, it can’t be corrected in the Google Home app (you can’t speed other speakers up). My original plan was to use this as part of a complex home audio setup that includes throwing music to both airplay and cast devices simultaneously. The delay that Sony has introduced in surround mode (impacts Soundbar users only) has made them impractical to use with other Cast speakers — which was my intended setup. Bottom line: Very good speakers in a standalone environment, but have limitations when trying to combine in more advanced set-ups that include their sister soundbar.

    Had Some Issues

My initial surprise was the fact that the speaker is not totally "wireless". There is a power cord that must be plugged into a wall outlet. I did not see this requirement advertised on the Best Buy web site or in any of the information I looked at on the Sony web site prior to my purchase. This made set-up in my living room awkward for me due to how the room is arranged. Just be prepared to deal with this issue. I also had issues setting it up with my sound bar. When I called Sony customer support I was informed that given the serial number I provided the speaker was out of warranty. (I guess it must has sat on Best Buy's shelf to long). Given the fact I had just purchased it, Sony agreed to help me and I did get it working. The speaker itself performs well and the sound quality is good. The speaker also sets up on my home WiFi network and can be used with other devices. Overall, after my initial frustration, I am satisfied.

Not worthy of a network speaker

Its MSRP is $ 199 and yet most of the times you can get it for $ 99. I bought 2 ofthese open box for $140. They are ok and sound good as long as you want to use them as standalone speakers or a stereo pair. However I needed a wireless multi room setup and for that Sony’s app Songpal sucks ( they still call it Songpal everywhere but on app store it has different name! The app is slow to load all the profilesthat you created, even after setting up these speakers, they keep showing up in the app to set them up again. and by the time the app loads the multi room/ wireless surround sound profile that I want to listen my interest vannishes. All in all, it was not worthy of a network speaker for even at the price that I paid ($140 for two) forget about full retail price. And if you needed a standalone bookshelf speakers, then there are much better options in the market. Looks like Sony couldnt inprove the shortcomings of this speaker so they discontinued this piece of crap!

I love how clear this product is. You have to have two and sync them to a compatible Sony Soundbar. Turn this speaker all the way up to get the true surround sound effect, and then watch Gothem, Stand up comedy on Netflix. It blew my mind. I was going to get the HI DEF speakers but they were too rich for my blood. I'm glade I didnt get them because these little guys work well enough to make me feel like I'm in a movie or in the front seats at the comdey shows. They're amazing. I cant really speak on the music side, but I would imagine that they are just great. The power is strong and can get loud. It lacks the level of bass that I am a custom to, but thats not a deal breaker. Depending on the situation, they can shine bighter than the sun. This thing shines as a pair. they are amazing for the PS4 PRO, Youtube, 4K MOVIES, and especially Netflix.

Speaker works well on stereo mode for music works well in pairs of 2. The whole concept behind it adding them to additional rooms like the Sonos systems is cool and a lot cheaper. However the sound quality is so so this model don't offer the hi res up scaling feature like my sound bar has the Sony HTNT5. The surround sound features with the wonky HTNT5 are where these speakers fall off terribly the audio is low and isn't the quality I'd expect it to be for a setup for a surround sound especially for the price it lacks depth and clarity and volume. And there is only basic settings to adjust those features. I've added the details into the review of the HTNT5 as it pertains to a surround sound system already see that review. But if your using it on music it's a winner it'll give you what you need and you add as many of these as you like to different rooms through out your home to give it a real nice vibe I hope to see a subwoofer add on soon so you can place one in a different location that would be an awesome addition cmon Sony make that for us enthusiasts. Those on the fence get them cause they are cheaper then the Sonos systems and offer hdmi outputs on all the speakers something Sonos don't

Although Sonos is the 'gold standard' for WiFi speakers, I've been hesitant to buy Sonos because it is so proprietary. You can only connect to Sonos via WiFi, and only using specific services/apps that it supports. So I've tried out several of the more 'open' brands, looking for WiFi speakers that also support bluetooth and, ideally, Google Cast. But I've found most of them lacking in features, unreliable, or half-baked and not-ready-for-primetime. These Sony speakers, on the other hand, are great. Easy to pair in stereo. Reliably stay connected to network and one another. Surprisingly big sound in a very small package. Easily switch between WiFi and bluetooth modes, and can be hooked up to most televisions with an HDMI cable. Where some other Sonos competitors fall flat, Sony really did their homework and built well-designed, functional speakers.
