    Synopsis

    Star Trek
Mission: Impossible III director and Alias creator J.J. Abrams resurrects the classic science fiction franchise created by Gene Roddenberry with this feature film that embraces the rich history of the influential television and film series while also exploring some uncharted territory. Heroes star Zachary Quinto assumes the role of the Federation Starfleet lieutenant and Vulcan made famous in the original series by Leonard Nimoy (who also appears in an older incarnation of his original role), Spock, with Anton Yelchin stepping into the role of USS Enterprise navigator Pavel Chekov, Zoe Saldana assuming the role of communications officer Uhura, Simon Pegg keeping the ship in top shape as chief engineer Montgomery Scott (aka "Scotty"), and Eric Bana tormenting the benevolent space explorers as the villainous Nero. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle co-star John Cho also boards the Enterprise as Hikaru Sulu, with Chris Pine and Karl Urban assuming the legendary roles of Captain Kirk and Leonard "Bones" McCoy, respectively. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

    Star Trek Into Darkness
The Star Trek franchise continues with this follow-up to 2009's J.J. Abrams-directed reboot. Abrams returns to direct from a script by Damon Lindelof and the writing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The crew of the Enterprise engages in an epic battle of good versus evil after being summoned home, only to discover Starfleet in ruins, and they venture into a war zone to find the powerful villain (Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch) responsible for the devastation. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars for a couple reasons. The packaging is really bad for this and I know that's a minor complaint. The main thing is that they are forcing us to rebuy the first movie which is already identical to what is included in this set. It was really only necessary to re-release the first movie with the IMAX and all the special features. Overall though, I say this is great for people that didn't previously own either of the movies. Just don't expect my for the packaging. It's quite flimsy.

This was released as an apology to serious Trekkies who practically rioted online over Paramount's parceling out of special features on individual releases across vendors. And then what did they do on Star Trek Beyond? Parceled them out again! But whatever. As a product unto itself it's a great little set. But the repackaged version of this set is superior. Sleeker thinner case. The first release (which I have) is unnecessarily space consuming.

What separates this set apart is IMAX aspect ratio on select scenes in the "Into Darkness" film, and the bonus features on that title that were previously spread out across multiple retail exclusives. Either you like the new Trek films or you don't, but the new release may not be enough for those who bought the prior versions of the two films. Shame they didn't include a 3D version of "Into Darkness" in this set.

For many when Star Trek (2009) was originally released the adoption of BluRay wasn't yet a sure thing so many opted for the DVD version. The compendium provides the movie and all the now hard to find special features. This is also the definitive collection for Star Trek Into Darkness as it was released over multiple store specific special packages and this release combines them all.

Though the transfer for Star Trek is identical to its basic release, the presentation for Into Darkness contains a number of large-format IMAX shots, scenes and sequences, running anywhere from a matter of moments to several minutes. Only downside Is the packaging feels cheap and I don't feel it will hold up over time

I was bummed that the Paramount didn't offer all special features and the IMAX version of Into Darkness, but they have made up for it by offering fans the Compedium (Although it is bundled with the first Star Trek movie) the extra special features and the IMAX scenes are immersive and the extra resolution does make a difference.

Held back one star because Star Trek Into Darkness should have been released in this iteration the first time. This release now has all of the special features that were split amongst several retailers as exclusives the first time it was released. It is a plus to have the IMAX version as well. Great looking and sounding Blu-ray.

This version includes the IMAX version of the movie that should have been issued originally. Yes, you have to buy the first reboot - again - but companies deserve support when they correct errors. Just don't support them when they don't put out every-single-special-feature-and-correct-aspect-ratio complete packages.
