Q: Does this case automatically put the iPad asleep on closure?
A: Yes it does!
Q: Does the stand swivel so the iPad can stand alone vertically?
A: What stand? There is no swivel. Just a cover that has a couple of folds manufactured in it to create a bit of lift at the top edge along horizontal orientation, for better angle on lap or desk. For a vertical stand, yes you can position the folds to allow your iPad to stand vertically, straight up and down on a solid surface. Don't let your cat rub against it though because it tips easily so the glass of your ipad would fall forward. Fortunately the corners of the iPad plastic frame have plenty of depth to keep the glass from cracking in that event.
