Synopsis

Super Mario Bros.
The huge success of the video games featuring animated Italian plumbers the Mario Brothers led to this $42 million live action movie. The two brothers (Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo) live in Manhattan and are chasing Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis), who wears a necklace made from a meteor fragment. Its powers can free a race of reptilian creatures from the city's sewers. The villainous ruler of the creatures, who are descendants of dinosaurs, is King Koopa (Dennis Hopper). Koopa has kidnapped Daisy and taken her to the underworld of Dinohattan, which is rat-infested and strewn with garbage. The Mario Brothers must overcome many obstacles, just as they do in video games, to free the princess. The film spares no expense with its use of animatronic monsters and high-tech special effects. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Super Mario Brothers = Super Purchase

I know this movie received bad feedback from the critics, but it's actually a great film. It's not bright and colorful like other children movies. It's dark, adventurous, with a fantastical element. I loved this movie when I first saw it in the theaters at age 7, and I still think it's a great movie. It doesn't resemble the video game franchise at all, but I don't think people would want to see grown men in bright suits, simply stomping on Goombas in order to save the Princess. That would be silly and boring. Imagine an actor playing Mario touching a mushroom in order to get bigger. Would you really take that seriously? What if he ran around with a racoon tail? As a child, I loved that it was dark and Yoshi was a little sticky and creepy. But he was still cute, and needed more camera time. Instead of making it cartoonish and childish, they attempted to make it as realistic as they possibly could. I mean, a real Yoshi is not going to be smooth and bright green. There's going to be some scales. The movie is unique, you have to give it that. So, if you want something that's original and different, then definitely see this movie. Is it a little cheesy? At times yes, but of course I would think that. I'm an adult!

This film gets a lot of negative reviews but it's fantastic. I first saw this when I was pretty small so my taste in film was not developed. However, since I'm becoming nostalgic, I bought this for the cost of renting it and it's wild, wacky and nothing really like Super Mario except with it's allusions. Besides Tank Girl, I can't think of too many film that were this wacky and based on media that was seen as low brow at the time. If you haven't seen this, but you are curious, come at it with an open mind. I think there is something here that's more about how we interpret games and the culture of escapism which the game is all about escaping the real world, rather than a faithful adaptation to the source material. The "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" to "Blade Runner" version of a game.

I picked this up for $3.99 in a bargain bin since it is not available at the library or free on Amazon Prime, so as far as disk cost, I think it was a deal. My 9yo is into Super Mario Brothers and was intrigued when I told him about it. We were both pretty disappointed in the movie. In it's defense though, I don't know how (back in 1993) Hollywood could produce a movie that features walking, talking toadstools, monstrous turtles and all the other characters of Super Mario Bros that we all enjoy. With today's CGI tech it would be a breeze! They could make a movie that mirrors the levels of gameplay.

This movie is notoriously bad. When pressed, Bob Hoskins used to wish it didn't exist. The whole thing is a train wreck, and is about as far from what you would expect a Mario movie to be while still using the appropriate names. And that's why it's fantastic. OK movies are imminently forgettable, but a truly bad movie will stay with you, and be a memory you can cherish. Invite some friends over and start making memories!

This was one of my favorite movies growing up and I have never seen it on DVD. On the way to checkout in best buy I saw it in the bin for $3.99! I'm so happy about my purchase because I got to share a super special movie to me with my family! And it was digitally remastered too and so it doesn't look as old as it is.

Let's be honest, finding a good quality classic film like the Mario Brothers is nearly impossible nowdays. Yet, the DVD was available with just a few at the store and ready for pick up. Another great turnout about this deal was the competitive price if compared to the online competitors markets.

This movie lacked alot needed to bring in more familar mario games elements and story needed work, but the main cause for flop was this the unrecognizable feel to mario until may near the end of the movie if that it just big disappointment it couldve been done way better

Do not go into this movie thinking you are about to watch a legitimate Oscar contender during its time. This is a stupid, fun movie. I watched this movie every other week as a child and still have fun watching it as an adult.
