Synopsis

Superman: The Movie
Richard Donner's big-budget blockbuster Superman: The Movie is an immensely entertaining recounting of the origin of the famous comic book character. Opening on Krypton (where Marlon Brando plays Superman's father), the film follows the Man of Steel (Christopher Reeve) as he's sent to Earth where he develops his alter-ego Clark Kent and is raised by a Midwestern family. In no time, the movie has run through his teenage years, and Clark gets a job at the Daily Planet, where he is a news reporter. It's there that he falls in love with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), who is already in love with Superman. But the love story is quickly sidetracked once the villainous Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) launches a diabolical plan to conquer the world and kill Superman. Superman: The Movie is filled with action, special effects and a surprising amount of humor. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

And the saga begins with Superman The Movie

5 of 5 stars for the comic book based movie Superman The Movie. This movie starts the franchise with the destruction of Krypton following sending of its last survivor to Earth. From the landing of his ice craft in the fields to his experiences in high school to his moving to Metropolis and working at the Daily Planet, this movies sets the basic history and story of Superman. An all star cast includes: Reeve, Hackman, Brando, Ford, Perine and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. This movie has the sequence with Lane in a long gown going flying with Superman. Once Superman is established as a character, we enter the meat of the movie where Superman fights against Lex Luther (Hackman). Helped by Perine & Beatty's characters, Luther learns to use Kryptonite to neutralize Superman. Then he steals a nuke for purposes of setting off a major Earthquake on the west coast to move "ocean-front property" to the east. A grand movie with sweeping music and visuals, this is a really fun movie and worth watching several times!

Should be a requirement in Blu-ray

This review is coming from someone who has seen this film in the theater, vhs, dvd, and now blu-ray. Seeing it in blu-ray was like watching it all over again. The resolution is amazing !!! Between the clarity of the background shots and the clean up of where Superman is optically added to the shot, this is a must have in any movie collection. The sound clarity was awesome too, with good balance. I've noticed with a lot of older movies converted to surround sound, the rear channels get overloaded with what should be heard with the front channels. Not so in this case, the sound was rich and full and never sounded metallic or faint. At the end, when Superman turns back time, you can actually hear the sound go from left to right and right to left depending on what direction he was flying. It's nice to see that someone took the time to remaster the sound correctly. I noticed a lot of different things when I watch movies, and I discovered a few things due to the clarity that I had never noticed before, but I won't post spoilers. Anyways, I'd recommend this blu-ray copy !!!

This is my favorite movie of all time and this upgrade to the Blu Ray format makes this old favorite brand new all over again. There is a timeless quality to this film and the Blu Ray format makes it all the more enjoyable and desire to introduce to a whole new generation of people. The picture and the sound are phenomenal and the overall quality of the DVD is awesome. Very highly recommended. Do yourself and your family a favor and be sure to add this classic masterpiece to your collection. All current successful comic book movies a great debt to Superman The Movie and director Richard Donner. Blu Ray all the way and this is a great example of why!

    The best superhero movie ever!

The tread of turning comic book heroes into movie franchises which still continues to this day began with Richard Donner's sublime take on the Man of Steel (which, appropriately, was released when Superman turned 40). Christopher Reeve was, in the minds of many, heavensent to play the title role and its his work which brings much of the picture's emotion and humor to the fore. However, the other roles are also letter perfect, including Gene Hackman's funny & serious Lex Luthor, Margot Kidder's spunky Lois, & Marlon Brando's sympathetic and commanding Jor-El. The great SFX & John Williams music are the icing on this delicious cake.

Superman: The Movie is an amazing movie for 1978. The effects are great for 1978. Christopher Reeve is an awesome Superman actor. Richard Donner did an astonishing job making this movie. Marlon Brando as Jor-El has great acting in the part where Jor-El says his goodbyes to his infant son. The Superman theme by John Williams is awesome. I love the sound of the theme. It's very heroic. If you want to show your friends some superhero stuff, you got to show them this movie. If you're a die hard Superman fan or casual movie goer, you must own it.

I am a big superhero genre fan. I've read 1000s of comics as a kid and I've seen every superhero movie made; this one is a classic obviously. I love Gene Hackman is this role and his version of Luther. What can I say, its more of a comedy action superhero movie and is a great one if you are introducing this genre to small kids. Definitely would put this under family friendly. Worth it for any blue ray superohero collection.

If you love Superman comics you'll love this movie. Many talented people and even more money came together to make this Superman movie special. Christopher Reeves is perfect in the lead role and the special effects were ahead of their time, winning many adwards. The Blu-Ray transfer looks great and the sound is better than I expected. Highly recommended for any Superman fan.

Worth It For Die Hard Fans

One of very few Blue-Ray titles that really excels, as the format should, in comparison to its standard dvd counterpart. Beautiful image quality and loads of bonus features make it worth every penny to a die-hard fan. For those who like the movie, but aren't crazy about it, I would recommend the standard dvd to save money or wait until the price on this one drops.
