Richard Donner's big-budget blockbuster Superman: The Movie is an immensely entertaining recounting of the origin of the famous comic book character. Opening on Krypton (where Marlon Brando plays Superman's father), the film follows the Man of Steel (Christopher Reeve) as he's sent to Earth where he develops his alter-ego Clark Kent and is raised by a Midwestern family. In no time, the movie has run through his teenage years, and Clark gets a job at the Daily Planet, where he is a news reporter. It's there that he falls in love with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), who is already in love with Superman. But the love story is quickly sidetracked once the villainous Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) launches a diabolical plan to conquer the world and kill Superman. Superman: The Movie is filled with action, special effects and a surprising amount of humor.~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

I really enjoyed watching this 3 hours cut of Superman the movie on blu ray. Also, I’m a huge fan of DC Comics, Star Wars, and Marvel comics in old and new movies. Although, I still wish they would have the DVD version and 4K of 3 hour cut Superman the movie. I was very happy to see the special edition of Superman the movie with special features from 2001 DVD as a kid. Hopefully, they’ll have Superman 2, Richard Donner cut, 3, and 4.
Very much rooted in classic Americana, Superman: The Movie reflects a past of simple nostalgia from its brassy score, soft focus/norman rockwell cinematography, and the endearing (and slightly corny) performances. The movie doesn't really have a strong narrative, and personally the portrayal of Lex Luthor isn't my favorite, but it's Christopher Reeve as Superman, and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane that make this movie something truly special.
And just to say this for any current Superman film fans reading this, Reeve and Cavill are both Superman to me.
This is a required purchase for anyone who is a film fan, for anyone who is a superhero fan in order to explore the early years of the genre.
I wasn't expecting much from this release, given some of the reviews I read online, but I was pleasantly surprised by this 4K disc! The advantage of film cameras (as opposed to digital cameras) shines with this pleasant visual presentation, with details such as the weaves of Superman's suit and the pores of his skin being much clearer in 4K. The HDR grading makes the classic film pop more, with the blues and reds of Superman standing out more than before (while still preserving a classic look). The Dolby Atmos track is held back by the older tech but height effects do occur in the title sequence and various action bits. If you love Christopher Reeve's Superman, definitely pick this up!
This is not a review of the movie but rather a personal review of the 4k restoration. When Superman: The Movie was first made the green screen technology did not exist to correct the shift in colors. Hence, Superman's costume varied through the movie. For the 4k restoration Donner painstakingly supervised the color correcting of the problem areas and enhanced the audio. This is the best Superman has ever looked or sound. While the image is slightly sharper, it retains the soft film grain look of all previous formats.
Two Disc collection of the original Superman Movie. Original theatrical version plus a second version that shows most of the film that was deleted to make the two hour theatre requirement. The extended version was originally put together for a two night TV Superman Special. This is a must for Superman fans.
A:AnswerYes, it is the original theatrical cut on both discs. It states it in tiny red letters on the back of the box. The only version that has the extended 8 minutes (if that's what you're referring to) is the DVD that was released years ago. I don't know if there was a bluray disc that had the extended cut though.
