Q: Will this system actually work as a router or do I need to buy a wireless router also?

A: The TCL LinkHub WiFi Mesh does not work as a router. You would have to get your own router and just expand it with the WiFi Mesh. We have the TCL Linkhub WifI router, which is an actual router - Cintya

Q: Do you need like a plan or anything with these or you hook them up and go?

A: We just decided where to place in the house and then just hooked them up which was super simple
