This movie is set in the worst possible human conditions: a civil war in a west African country. Cruelty, suffering, violence, and poverty fill the scenes. Into this setting comes a group of dedicated medical doctors who want to relieve the suffering as much as they can. Two of them fall in love and have to navigate that relationship in an environment in which love is hard to maintain. If director Sean Penn's purpose was to bring attention to the awful conditions in the civil war and the difficulties of having good human relationships in those situations, he succeeds, perhaps too well. You get the feeling that you're watching a raging wild fire that won't allow for positive human intervention. I don't think this was Penn's intension, but you might conclude that there's nothing to do except to let the fire rage until it burns itself out, destroying everything, even loving relationships.

This is a wild love story. Set right in the middle of war torn Liberia. Great special effects.
