Synopsis

The Last Legion
Co-adapted by Tom Butterworth and Jez Butterworth from Valerio Massimo Manfredi's best-selling historical adventure novel, Doug Lefler's period epic The Last Legion unfurls in 470 A.D., just prior to the fall of the colossal Roman Empire. As the most recent in a long line of caesars, a young Roman child, Romulus (Thomas Sangster), is poised to inherit the throne -- until Germanic forces invade, lay siege to the city, and brutally murder his parents. At the last second, with his life hanging by a thread, Romulus receives the protection of military commander Aurelius (Colin Firth), who assembles a cadre of rebels, including Romulus, the boy's magician instructor, Ambrosinus (Sir Ben Kingsley), and the Indian female warrior Mira (Aishwarya Rai). After Romulus discovers an enchanted sword once claimed by Julius Caesar, the troupe heads out to the province of Britannia and Hadrian's Wall. There, the men will regroup with the Ninth Legion and plan one final triumphant stand against the barbarian invaders of Rome. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

    Thoroughly enjoyable movie!

I was originally drawn to this movie because of the actors and the connection to King Arthur. As a fan of Arthurian legend, I have continuously been disappointed by recent movies' ways of retelling the legend. However, I thoroughly enjoy watching the Last Legion again and again! As a rather low-budget film, I was not expecting anything near the quality and intellectual impact of this film. The special effects are very believable, even better than some blockbusters made only a few years ago. The battle sequences are intense, one reminiscent of the Battle of Helm's Deep from Lord of the Rings. The locations are beautiful, capturing the foggy mystique of Britain and the splendorous majesty of Italy's Ancient Rome. The all-star cast brings dynamic and emotion to the story where it lacked in budget. Thomas Sangster, a fairly young actor, does a fantastic job playing the 12 year old newly-crowned emperor and effectively captures the mixture between the child and the Caesar. Patrick Doyle, best known for HP:GOF, Sense and Sensibility, and Secondhand Lions, creates a spectacular score utilizing especially the trumpet for both dramatic and haunting melodies. The ending of the movie is satisfying both emotionally and visually. I recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys a well rounded movie that satisfies both the heart and head. In fact, the only thing that could be improved on in this movie is that is could have been twice as long!

The movie is definitely underrated. The movie gives an interesting twist to the Arthurian legend with this movie focusing on the transition from Roman Britain to the post-Roman period. It has a lot of action, but also a good story line that keeps you engaged. A good cast with Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley. If you enjoyed the movie King Arthur then you will most likely enjoy this movie as well.

This movie is average at best & thats being kind because I love period piece movies but this one should have been made for TV because with a script that looks like they were writing it as they went along & obviously a VERY limited budget, dont get this movie. So those wanting to see a good Excalibur movie go back a few years & get Clive Owens "KING ARTHUR" or Sean Connery in "First Knight"

I love movies about the ancient past and this one fits the bill. I waited awhile to buy this movie but I was not disappointed. It had good cinematography and a good plot . The acting was good too. It won't compare to the other greats like Gladiator and 300 but it is still fun to watch.

My wife and I enjoyed the premise of this film. Very interesting story line about the ending days of ancient Rome. A good action story as well. It's not on the top of my list of action dramas but it's still worth owning. We will watch it again and will no doubt like it even more.

I really enjoyed this movie. A neat new view of the story of King Arthur with a bit of true history thrown in. Also some great fight scenes, they didn't cheap out on them. And a background story of one of the dark times of Rome, when they briefly had a barbarian king in history.

I only wish that the story was totally true - It is true that the very basic characters have some basis in, perhaps, historical figures BUT it was a very nice and easy movie to watch and wonder.............

This film fits great with other films about the mighty Excalibur sword. Creates great characters and lots of fun. Colin Firth as I've never seen him as he tries the save the Roman Empire.
