Timeless Entertainment The Lord of the Rings original trilogy are epic films based on epic books. Last year the original theatric cuts of the films were released on Blu-ray disc. It had been some time since I had seen these films, so I decided to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I wanted to see if my fond memories of the film held up after so many years. I watched this film for the first time in theaters back in 2001. When it first released on home media, I purchased it and its two sequels and watched them all many times. At just under three hours, it is a long film, and it actually has an extended version as well. Film fans will be relieved to hear that the Blu-ray version impresses. The breathtaking cinematography and visual effects still rival today’s films and even overshadow some of the recent summer “blockbusters.” This version is the best for first time viewers and long-time fans. Blu-ray disc offers the highest fidelity available for home viewing, and since this version is the same “cut” as originally released, viewers will be able to enjoy this film without being overwhelmed with excessive footage. 9.5 out of 10 arbitrary units.

I already owned the 15-disk extended trilogy collection on blu-ray when I happened upon this 3-disk set at a great sale price. After watching this collection, I can honestly say I prefer these theatrical film versions to the extended versions. In my opinion, the theatrical versions are more streamlined and feel as if there is never a wasted or boring moment, and that's while still clocking in at about nine hours combined. I also didn't feel like anything important was missing. As for the picture and sound, I found both to be excellent, and it is great to again see "Fellowship" without the (in my opinion) distracting and irritating color tint applied to the extended edition! Obviously, this set does not include all the deleted scenes and special features found in the extended collection. Also, there is little to no artwork in the packaging (the disks are a simple silver with black print). However, if you're just looking for the original films as shown in theaters, you'll be very happy with this collection.

Film series consisting of three high fantasy adventure films directed by Peter Jackson. They are based on the novel The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. Set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, the films follow the hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) as he and the Fellowship embark on a quest to destroy the One Ring, and thus ensure the destruction of its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron. The Fellowship eventually splits up and Frodo continues the quest together with his loyal companion Sam (Sean Astin) and the treacherous Gollum (Andy Serkis). Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), heir in exile to the throne of Gondor, Legolas, Gimli, Merry, and Pippin, and the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) unite to rally the Free Peoples of Middle-earth in the War of the Ring.

I first saw Lord of the Rings back when I was in college. Was playing "Never Have I Ever" and was one of the few in the group that had not seen any of LoTR. Started watching The Fellowship of the Ring on VHS on a very small screen in the college library. Was instantly hooked (even on the small screen) and don't think I have ever seen a movie with more edge-of-your-seat excitement! I have seen all 3 movies 5 to 10 times each, and have read the books as well. Peter Jackson does a great job of bringing the spirit and (most) of the story of Tolkien's books to life! Already had the trilogy on DVD but definitely worth getting the BluRays of my favorite movies for better quality, especially because they were on sale.

For years after the Extended Editions first hit the scene, I said (like so many others) that those were the superior versions of the films. These days I'm not so sure. For instance, in the Two Towers, there are scenes I never really cared for that almost turned Eowyn into a very unnecessary source of comic relief ("I made some soup. It's hot!"). Regardless, I felt it was time to view these again (I got rid of my DVD copies of the theatrical editions years ago), and if I have to double-dip, $15 is a pretty low price point. Highly recommended to those who either haven't seen the films or just want to see them in their original form(s) again.

If you are at all interested in the act of making films and how they come together, this is one of the best purchases you can make. The three very entertaining, very enjoyable films that this was actually made for almost come across as an afterthought when compared to the twenty-six hours of behind the scenes footage that comes along with it. The Hobbit series has built on this even further, but this is where it all started. Being able to see the love and care that went into the set building, and the amount of effort that went into even the most basic items really takes these films to a completely different level. Whatever flaws they may have, I have to say that these are some of the greatest movies ever made, and certainly among the most well documented.

I've never read any of the books but once I started the first film I fell in love with the lore. The films do a great job on letting you know what is going on for those who are new and unaware. Cinematography in these films are awesome in all three films. I used a 4k LG HDR tv and Xbox One X and from my recent 4k movies I've watched this Blu-ray is a match. I can't wait till a 4k version releases with more clarity and the HDR goodness. For $14.99 you can't go wrong with this set.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy series is one of the most entertaining movie series that I've seen. I appreciate films that don't pass up good writing. I think everyone has raved about a good movie only to be contradicted by the person that says "well the book was so much better". Without digressing into the off topic debate of literature vs screen play I will say that my opinion is that the Rings trilogy did an amazing job accomplishing homage to the books. If you're into the fantasy realm and can appreciate a deep and detailed story full of well defined characters, your time viewing will be time adequately spent.
