Synopsis

Treasure Planet
Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale of adventure Treasure Island gets a science fiction update in this animated feature from Walt Disney Pictures. Jim (voice of Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a young man who grew up reading tales of pirates and adventures on the high seas, and longs for similar excitement in his own life. One day, Jim happens upon a dying man who hands him a map and warns him to "Beware the cyborg" shortly before he passes on. Upon careful examination, Jim realizes the map charts the course to Treasure Planet, a distant world where hundreds of space pirates have stashed their loot. Jim is certain this is the adventure he's been dreaming of, and joins the crew of the spaceship R.L.S. Legacy and Captain Amelia (Emma Thompson) as they set out to find the fabled Treasure Planet. While Jim signs on along with his friend Dr. Doppler (voice of David Hyde Pierce), he soon becomes close friends with John Silver (voice of Brian Murray), who works in the galley but has big plans. Jim discovers just how big his plans are when Silver reveals he's part cyborg and all pirate, instigating a mutiny and attempting to take control of the ship. Despite his friendship with Silver, Jim refuses to take part in the mutiny, and soon finds himself attempting to defend law and order against a spacecraft full of reckless men. Treasure Planet's voice cast also includes Michael Wincott and Martin Short; Johnny Rzeznik from the rock group The Goo Goo Dolls contributed new music for the soundtrack. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I kinda bought this thing on a lark without really understanding it. I kinda figured it had to be some kind of adaptation of Treasure Island, only y'know... set in space. With space pirates and all kinds of 'PEW, PEW, PEW!" I have a kid and that kid has some kinda complex I think 'cause he's totally obsessed with pirates. I mean, he eats, breathes and sleeps pirates. I tried getting him to watch Star Wars and he wasn't into it. 'Cause there wasn't any pirates. I told him Han Solo was kind of like a pirate but he wasn't fooled. Though Han is kind of like a pirate, in a way, if you think about it. Anyway, I saw this gem of a film sitting around the store aisles, in beautiful Blu-Ray format. And I had a thought; if I could make the kid watch a movie about pirates, but pirates in SPACE then I could maybe build a bridge towards getting him to like Star Wars and I'll have no longer failed as a parent. So I got this, put it on... the kid liked it and now... safe to say he warmed up to spacey space adventures and watched Star Wars (the original trilogy - he's not allowed to watch the Prequels) and he's now kinda off the whole pirate thing. Which is good, 'cause his teachers were starting to send letters home about all that. He's no longer trying to steal lunch boxes whilst screaming about his treasure and babbling 'yarrr' all the time. But he does keep hitting me with a broom stick and telling him "you're not my father!" Which I found odd. Anyway, overall - a good flick. I enjoyed it. And it accomplished my mission and did its job.

I'm not typically a fan of re-imaginings when it comes to films. Instead of making a sci-fi version of a pre-existing story, why not make your own original one? But there's something about Treasure Planet that just works. Everything from the animation to the re-working of characters, this is a worthy version of the classic "Treasure Island" tale.

Strange how a new treatment of Stevenson's Treasure Island can fit so well in space but it does. The juxtaposition of space age technology and 18th century sailing ships is a blast. A good time to be had by all.

Treasure planet isn't the greatest Disney flick, but it is one of the last to be actually hand drawn. Beautiful to look at, but story is meh

I'm a fan of animation and really enjoyed this movie. It's not one of Disneys all time blockbusters but I was entertained nonetheless.
