We have a two-story townhome and live in Florida. Our second story, where the master's retreat is located, gets very warm during the summer...even with our central air running. Our home owner's assoc will not allow window units, so when we decided to look into A/C units, we knew it would have to be a portable A/C. I spent nearly a month, researching and reviewing port. A/Cs to learn that they will never be as powerful as a window unit. Dissapointed, we tried to suffer it out without a purchase, but low-and-behold, we reached record high temps and broke down and purchased this Whirlpool from Best Buy. From my research, I decided to buy this unit, above the others...namely for the reputation the Whirlpool holds. So many of the others were brands that we had never heard before. We have had the unit for a month now, dealing with 97F degrees daily. It does the job...however; not amazingly so. Please know that ALL portable A/Cs can ONLY be concidered adjunct, or SUPPLIMENTAL cooling solutions. Having said that, we are able to keep our room (450sq. ft.) at about 70-72F degrees nightly. This is with our central A/C shutting off about 1 hour AFTER we turn on the Whirlpool. For example, our Central A/C runs until 10pm, our Whirlpool comes on at 9pm. That hour of overlap gives enough buffer so that the Whirlpool can cool the room by about another 8-10 degrees, and hold it there for the night. After using this unit, I would not expect it to completely cool a hot room during the daytime (without the adjunct of central air). I would not expect it to cool an enclosed patio in the summer. I would not expect it to cool a large room indepdently in the summer. I WOULD recommend it for those in our situation, where we just couldn't afford to upgrade our central A/C to a larger tonnage, but needed some relief. Hope this helps...I know I wish I had found a review like this when I was researching units.

cool air conditioner

I will start with the pluses...this air conditioner does keep a good sized room COOL. The controls and the remote work nicely. The water drain plug situation is good and I found draining it onto a very thick towel works (no carpeting underneath though).
The negatives...well, I will be emailing Whirlpool and I really hope they do some design changes. The box shows the outlet plug (3 prong) with the two on top and single on bottom the the plug cord coming out the bottom of the plug after it is plugged in an outlet. The unit I got has this set up UP SIDE DOWN...so the plug and cord (which is HEAVY) pulls away from the outlet and needs to be taped to the wall. The water hose from the unit is not the easiest to install...so I left it off. My situation is probably very different from other people because I have several cats who LOVE TO SIT ON TOP OF THIS UNIT> therefore, turning the unit on and off and changing all of the settings. It is annoying and humorous. I will be making a shelf for the kitties above this unit. Also, The window plate should be made out of metal ...this I also needed to tape to hold the heavy hose more securely. So, With DUCT TAPE in hand everything is COOL. =^,,^=

I bought two of these. They are very heavy, but they do cool a room well, although they are kind of noisy. A week after installation, one of my two units completely failed and only blows hot air. The other is still working (knock on wood). I would not recommend it due to the 50% failure rate, because they are so heavy and difficult to install it is a real pain when it breaks. Also, the water tube is a pain to deal with.

My wife and I bought this product a couple of months ago and have tried it out a few different times and in a couple of different rooms. It hasn't worked that good for us at all. It will only go to 61 degrees and doesn't work good enough to cool a small room. I would recommend a 10 year old window air conditioner in a heartbeat over this one.

I would highly recommend this product for a small room. We have central air, but my son's room is never cool. We purchased this for him and his room is like an ice box at 69 - 70 degrees.
