I bought a 360 Arcade the DAY it came out, and it lasted only a week. I played for MAYBE an hour a day, and it was well vented, while on tile, laying on it's side.
I loved it... until it crashed, then Target wouldn't take it back, and Microsoft wanted to repair it, and i still have not gotten a replacement or money!
Bought a PS3 that week. Still going as of 2011! PSN is better than live... video chat is great, built in WIFI, better graphics, and overall a better UI.
Buy a PS3, not this garbage.

I have had the console for about a week now and it is working great. I have it on it's side and it is working great for ventalation. The console is somewhat loud when it has a disc in it but other than that it is perfect. Occationally the controller will just shut off and I will have to turn it back on but it works well. It might just be that I have been using the same batteries since i bought it and I have been playing a lot.

Got my refurbished 360 in about a week ago and it has been great so far. Everything came neatly packed and looks like new. The model shipped to me has the place for the hard drive which may come in handy someday. I believe the description said it came with a wired controller but I can't complain about that because mine came with a wireless one. The only downside to this model is that the fan / drive seems louder than the new x boxes. Other than the noise, this is a great setup for the money.

Refurbished Console Lounder Than New

After months of research, price comparing, procrastinating, and saving money I finally decided to purchase an Xbox 360 to use as a Windows Media Center Extender in my bedroom. I prepared myself that an Xbox creates more noise than other consoles but when I turned on the refurbished unit it was unacceptably loud for my application. Additional research pointed that refurbished units have bigger and louder fans than their new counterparts and a YouTube video comparing the noise levels of a new unit to a refurbished unit proved it. Some on the Internet claim the HDD and/or the DVD drive are to blame but trust me when I say it was 100% the internal cooling fans. Thankfully Best Buy was very cooperative in allowing me to exchange the refurbished console for a new console and I was happy to pay the difference if it meant that the new console would be quieter. Crossing my fingers I powered up the new unit and the noise level was dramatically less. Bottom line, if you can deal with the extra noise that a refurbished unit puts out then I think it’s a great deal, otherwise stick with a new unit.

I love my Xbox 360. I have had it for 3 years with no issues.
Mine started out as an Arcade and I added a 20GB hard drive.
Granted the 360's do have a bad reliability reputation I think that this is mostly the consumers fault.
If you keep it dust free, lay it on its side so it has air flow through the large vents on the sides it will run at much cooler temps. Also don't set it on carpet that will only restrict air flow.
Perfectly fine equipment will last along time if you take care of it.
Xbox live is the much better online community. It's price did go up $10 this year but for what you get for that ammount it is well worth it. Lots of games are available to buy online, so they need a 1TB drive and maybe the ability to save the games on a server on your network.
Game developers all seem to be saying that they have met the current gen consoles maximum capabilities.
Microsoft said that they see the 360 having a 15 year life cycle being about 7 years old that still leaves some time. I honestly think that next gen consoles will come out xmas of 2012 and the 360 and Ps3 will continue on much like the PS2 has all these years.

ive had my xbox 360 arcade for over a month and have had no trouble its quiet and works like new. my only problem is that the controller that came with it had a few buttons malfunctioning. its all good though cuz i got a new one sent to me pretty quickly. overall im satisfied with my purchase and would recommend to anyone on a budget. new is always better than rebuilt. but when you get an xbox for 130 that operates like new why would you pass that up?

From reading other peoples review, and from talking to my local bestbuy, I found out that these refurbished xbox's are pretty much luck of the draw. You do not know if your xbox was originally red ringed, or if was simply returned for no reason. Nevertheless, I decided to buy the refurbished xbox360.
I so far have had no rerets! I popped in a 20 gb hard drive that my friend gave me (doesnt come with a harddrive#, got a cooler fan, bridged an internet connection through my laptop #because this doesnt have wifi), got the xbox companion app for my Windows phone, and extended my main computers media center through the extender.
I have my xbox on pretty much most of the day for playing music, netflix, and watching/recording tv with the media player extender. I constantly check for overheating issues, but have not had one yet. I am really happy with my purchase!
final thoughts: Keep the xbox horizontal and OFF the carpet! This DOES NOT come with a hard drive or wifi adaper....but it DOES come with an hdmi cable, wireless controller, and component cables. also, google: "bridge xbox 360 windows 7 internet connection" this is one way of getting around the no wifi problem

Decently Priced, Many Hassles

I purchased this package on 5/06/10. After waiting over a week (standard ground shipping) to get it I was thrilled to have my very own Xbox 360 - boy what a deal too ! Upon opening the box all components seemed to be there and it looked like I was going to be playing xbox in about 5 minutes. This is where the fun ends.
The first thing I noticed is that all of the components had a used look to them (dirt, grime, cheeto's sauce). The HDMI cable didn't seem to be very high quality and appeared to be a mass manufactured generic one - also the port for the HDMI cable on the Xbox itself was stretched out and not very tight with the connector. There was also something small rattling around inside the console. These are minor things, but one would expect to get a little better product from Best Buy. I soon found out that the power cord to the A/C adapter had a different end on it than the receiving end on than the A/C adapter. Why Microsoft ever made 2 different ends? I don't know, but I was rather upset as I couldn't even power it on until I obtained a new chord.
Wondering where to go for customer service, I checked the papers in the box that came with it and apparently Best Buy has an outside company do the refurbishing (Nuko Inc. of Riverdale, NJ) so I called them to get the problem settled. In the meantime I borrowed a cord from a friend and found out that the fan constantly ran and it was a really loud machine. Nobody answered on Friday afternoon so I called Monday at about 10:00AM and talked to a guy who eventually got the right cord sent to me free of charge.
2 Months later I got the RROD-E74 message (machine completely inoperable). Calling on both a Friday and Monday morning at about 10:00 I have gotten no answer from Nuko Inc. I am hoping to get the machine repaired within their 90 day limited warranty on hardware and workmanship. Thus ends the story for now.
