Synopsis

Zathura
An old and forgotten game develops magical powers in this fantasy for the whole family. Twelve-year-old Walter Budwing (Josh Hutcherson) and his younger brother, Danny (Jonah Bobo), figure they're going to be in for a boring time when their father (Tim Robbins), who was supposed to spend the day with them, is suddenly called away on business, and gives them strict orders not to leave the house. Walter, who doesn't have much use for Danny, is motivated by boredom more than anything else when he agrees to play a board game Danny has found in the basement during a round of hide-and-seek. However, the boys quickly discover the space-themed game Zathura has some unusual qualities -- a roll of the dice unexpectedly launches the Budwing home into outer space, and Walter and Danny are suddenly fending off menacing robots, angry aliens, and showers of interstellar debris outside the Earth's atmosphere. As the boys try to figure out a way back home, they get some unexpected help from an earthling astronaut (Dax Shepard) who has also lost his way. Based on the book by children's author Chris Van Allsburg -- who also wrote The Polar Express and Jumanji -- Zathura was directed by Jon Favreau, the actor-turned-filmmaker who enjoyed a breakthrough success with Elf. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A Great Sequel for the Family

The kids pull out a new game. And are blasted into deep space. The twists and turns that were there in the original continue in this one. There's also a little time travel, of sorts. There's a wonderful scene in the basement, early on, where the furnace looks exactly like a monster. The young kid doesn't react specifically to it, but we, as an audience, see the monster furnace. But no one points a finger at it. This is an example of how nicely done this is. The morals taught here are also nicely done. The family comes closer together through experiencing the game. Kids should love this.

This was a fun ride, although it did mirror Jumanji somewhat. Very entertaining to watch Kristen Stewart and Josh Hutcherson in their early career days, you could see the promise of future roles. Dax Shepard is very good as the astronaut also. But you have to reject your logical thought processes for entertainment value.

This movie will keep the audience watching because of the unexpected twists and surprises in the story. In the beginning, the two brothers in the story have a very strained relationship. The story pushes them together and forces the pair to work on their issues, making them both better people in the end.

Great family movie for the holidays. Great science fiction story with evil aliens, time travel and two brothers who find a a game that transports the two brothers, their sister, and their house into an alternate dimension in space. If you enjoyed Jumangi then you will enjoy this story.

A little scary for my grandson, but I love this movie. The fighting between the brothers is believable. The action is well paced and the move looks great. I love the twist towards the end and watching how my grandson understood it. Definitely recommend this movie.

This movie is similar to Jumanji in the sense that is based on two kids playing a board game which effects their reality. It has a couple twists and turns along the way and many comedic moments. It is a good movie that can be enjoyed by both children and adults.

I didn't really know what to expect from this movie and I watched it only recently for the first time. I initially thought it was going to be a Jumanji clone and, although there were some obvious Jumanji elements, it was a great movie in it's own right.
