The Samsung Odyssey G8 is undeniably a strong gaming monitor, boasting 4K UHD resolution, a smooth 240Hz refresh rate, and vibrant QD-OLED visuals. The deep blacks and crisp whites make for an impressive viewing experience. That said, it’s pretty straightforward—it gets the job done without offering much beyond its core specs. One small gripe I have is with the power cable; it just doesn’t seem to plug in all the way, even when fully secured. Weird, right?

PROS: - Unboxing this, I was immediately impressed with how thin the monitor is. Of course, with it being OLED you would expect that but it’s really impressive! - The monitor is super easy to set up but you can use the arm mount that is included or mount it to a third party bracket. - Once hooked up to your computer, I was amazed at the picture quality. It has a no glare screen with 4K OLED clarity. You can easily see every color that pops and the blacks are deep! Samsung also included OLED safeguard technology to help with burn in which means you can have this monitor a long time. - The 240Hz refresh rate on the screen is the true game changer as it makes everything super smooth but along with making sure you have a competitive advantage when online gaming! - Another super cool feature is its back of the panel lighting system. It syncs with your screen to project what you are doing on the screen onto your backdrop and it really adds some incredible pop! CONS: - I do wish this has a Thunderbolt / USB-C connector plugin. BOTTOM LINE: - Samsung really delivered with their new Odyssey OLED G8. It’s a massive screen with incredible 4K OLED picture quality. It’s smooth and fast, and makes it a joy to use for gaming, content creation, or even work. This monitor can do it all and looks super sleek while doing so!

A bit of forewarning, the Samsung G8 Odyssey G81SF comes in two sizes. The model reviewed here is for the 32 inch model. The Odyssey line of monitors are part of their gaming category of displays. And while they are marketed so, it can be used for outside of gaming. Unboxing the monitor is straightforward. The stand comes in two pieces and connects securely to ensure stability. The power supply is not built into the monitor and is provided by a power brick. The power cable is also right-angled and doesn’t take up any room and can be used on most common 6-outlet strips. Connecting the power to the monitor is a barrel connector. However, it appears strange seeing a little bit of that barrel connector exposed despite it being fully seated in. Driving the display for my test run is an ASUS ROG Zephyrus laptop running on a RTX 4090. I used the included HDMI cable to connect the two together. After getting into Windows, setting the G81SF as the primary display, and maxing out the resolution, I started running a few tests. With a refresh rate of 240Hz, I went to the well-known UFO Test to check the display’s refresh rate capability. It turns out the monitor isn’t able to reach that 240Hz refresh rate. There are random times that it can hit it. But it is having trouble keeping up. Whether this is due to the cable, the laptop GPU, or something else entirely is unknown. However, at 240Hz, the refresh rate is overkill for me personally. I feel that the highest I need would be 120Hz. Still, the high refresh rate means that the experience will be smooth. For media, I went to YouTube to view a video in 4K/UHD. The image is sharp and crisp while colors are vibrant. Compared to viewing a 1080p video, it felt like night and day. After a quick viewing, I fired up a game of Guild Wars 2 for a quick run through a few scenes. Like before, the images are sharp and the framerate is smooth. While it isn’t the best test setup and game to gauge how well the monitor performs, it handles every frame the laptop is capable of rendering. A drawback to this monitor is the lack of built-in speakers. But most people probably will use a different audio output for that task. It’s a minor inconvenience but not a dealbreaker. Overall, it’s a great display that’s great for gaming and for productivity. Yet while its colors are great because of OLED, the constant haunting of “burn-in,” AKA “image retention,” that is inherent of OLED panels will lurk in the back of your mind. Consistent care is necessary to avoid that. Now, is it worth the asking price? If you absolutely want OLED, then sure this is a good buy. But if OLED isn’t your thing and you can live without the vibrant colors, there are options that can cost less than half the asking price. Verdict: if you need OLED, buy it. Otherwise, skip. The Good: 4K/UHD at 32 inch is the sweet spot for pixel density, OLED’s vibrant colors, has VESA mount The Bad: no built-in speakers, fear of image “burn-in” due to OLED The Ugly: the thought of image retention of your Windows taskbar after using it for too long

I currently own a Samsung 77" OLED TV and couldn’t wait to get my hands on and test this new powerhouse of a monitor with my game play. The 32-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G81SF is a stunning 4K QD-OLED gaming monitor. Its 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms response time make it perfect for immersive gaming, with incredible features like HDR and a glare-free coating. Glare-Free Win: The anti-glare coating cuts reflections by 54%, so my bright room doesn’t dull the screen. Burn-In Protection: The quiet cooling system prevents burn-in, letting me game for hours without worry. Sharp Design: The slim metal build and adjustable stand look sleek and fit my desk perfectly. Cons: No Speakers: It lacks audio and smart TV features, so I need external speakers. My Experience: Playing Cyberpunk 2077 (Path-Traced Edition) on this 32-inch monitor is mind-blowing, bringing the same OLED magic I love from my 77" Samsung TV to my gaming setup. Night City’s neon-lit Corpo Plaza, with its shimmering ray-traced reflections on glass skyscrapers, pops with the QD-OLED’s bold colors and HDR. The 4K resolution makes details like the intricate patterns on V’s samurai jacket or sparks from a katana clash stand out super sharp. My room’s bright, but the glare-free coating keeps the visuals pristine. The 240Hz refresh rate makes fast-paced action, like dodging bullets in a gang shootout, feel effortless, with no lag or blur. The cooling system lets me play for hours without burn-in concerns, crucial for a game with a static HUD. I absolutely Love the 240Hz refresh rate! How It Helped My Game Play: This monitor transformed Cyberpunk 2077 for me. During the “The Heist” mission, the 32-inch screen made sneaking through Konpeki Plaza so immersive, with every neon glow feeling alive, just like on my Samsung OLED TV. The 240Hz and fast response time sharpened my reflexes, letting me land precise headshots on Arasaka guards in tense firefights, similar to how my mousepad boosts my PUBG aim. The 4K clarity helped me spot hidden eddies or enemies in dark alleys, making looting and combat more efficient. You need a strong GPU to max out 4K, and my setup handles it well, but a weaker system might not keep up. Worth It?: The G81SF is a must for Cyberpunk 2077 if you’ve got a powerful PC. The visuals, smoothness, and glare-free screen are phenomenal, matching the OLED quality I love from my 77" TV. The lack of speakers and annoying setup aren’t dealbreakers, but they’re noticeable. If you’re into immersive gaming, this monitor’s a total game-changer. If you need built-in audio, you might want to look elsewhere. I will add that streaming movies on Netflix with this beast of a monitor is just another bonus.
