Clive Donner directs the legendary George C. Scott in this production of A Christmas Carol that comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but this 20th Century Fox release should satisfy fans of the film as well as those looking for a family-friendly holiday title.
First thing is first. There are a couple remakes available on a Christmas carol. I like this one and the one with Alastair Sim (1951). I think they captured the meaning of the book very well. The transfer on this movie is good, however I am not sure why the aspect ratio is 4:3, not sure why it was filmed that way back in the eighties. The sound is decent too. They show this every year on tv, give it a try and if you like it purchase it.
I enjoyed the movie very much when I saw it, for the first time, on television back in 1984; and I was determined if this movie ever comes out on video, I was going to own one of it. When I saw it was on DVD I bought it. A few years later I saw it was on Blu-Ray, and I liked that one even better.
The theme song of that movie, "God Bless Us Every One", has its lyrics closed-captioned on Blu-Ray disc; which is a definite plus because the DVD I bought, a few years ago, doesn't have the theme song's lyrics captioned on it.
If only there were a few extra features added to the Blu-Ray, I would have rated it as "Excellent" instead of "Good". Namely, I would have liked for some of the music scores, by themselves, to have been added to the Blu-Ray. Specifically, I would love to listen to the score, by itself, of when the Ghost of Christmas Present opens his robe and shows Scrooge the two children, Ignorance and Want.
Other than that I am glad, very glad, I bought this Blu-Ray of George C. Scott as Scrooge.
Since I first saw this version of A Christmas Carol on television as a child I have preferred it to any other version of the film to which I have been exposed. George C Scott plays Scrooge quite well in my opinion.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Another Christmas classic
Owned for 7 months when reviewed.
This classic tale never gets old. It has been told and retold over and over again. Just about every child knows the story, and the message.
I had to add this dvd to my collection. These classic stories are great to watch with the family during Christmas.
