Synopsis

A Hard Day's Night
During the first worldwide flush of Beatlemania in 1964, United Artists wanted to ship out a movie with The Beatles before their vogue was over. Working within a tight $500,000 budget, director Richard Lester turned out A Hard Day's Night in a fast 6 1/2 weeks; the picture was in the theatres three months after shooting commenced. Using a variety of techniques cribbed from Hollywood slapstick comedies, the French "new wave" movement, and his own experiences as a TV-commercial director, Lester, with screenwriter Alun Owen, fashioned an exhilarating study of a "typical" 36 hours in the lives of the Fab Four. Onto a plot about getting to the Big Show on time are hung a series of instant-reaction gags, character vignettes, and musical setpieces. Much of the humor arises from Paul McCartney's efforts to keep his grandfather (Wilfred Brambell), a "clean old man," from getting into mischief. Also good for several laughs is the hookey-playing Ringo Starr, whose mistimed declaration of independence lands him in jail. We are also treated to a war of nerves between the unflappable John Lennon and an uptight TV director (Victor Spinelli), who worries that, should the Beatles not show up at broadcast time, he'll be demoted to "News In Welsh." George Harrison stars in a sequence in which he is mistaken for an auditionee by the producer (Kenneth Haigh) of a superficially trendy, teen-oriented TV weekly. Then there's Norman Rossington and John Junkin as The Beatles' managers, who carry on a battle royale simply because one man is taller than the other. The supporting cast includes comedienne Anna Quayle, cartoonist Bob Godfrey, TV host Robin Ray, dancer Lionel Blair, Harrison's future wife Patti Boyd, and director Lester himself. The songs include "I Should Have Known Better," "And I Love Her," "Tell Me Why," "If I Fell," "Can't Buy Me Love," and the title song. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

You know this movie has a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes? Probably one of the most universally loved movies of all time. And a giant engine behind the explosion of the most popular anything of the 20th century. If you have trouble with British accents then turn on subtitles as this is one of the most devilishly funny and verbally cruel movies ever to be aimed at the youth. The musics great as we all know but its the instinctive acting and scripted comedy writing that really stand out most. This movie was meant to be a cashgrab lark to capitalize on a surely trending band with naught but 15 minutes left, but the movie, like the Beatles gave us more than we deserved.

No need to comment on the movie itself -everyone knows this is the great grandaddy of all rock 'n' roll films. What people shopping for the Critereon version want to know is if they got the details right, and boy, did they ever. The picture is dazzling, the extras are great, and the sound is especially phenomenal. I tried the 5.1 mix on my home theater, and the stereo mix on my 2-channel system in my den, and was amazed both times. There are details in the mix I've never noticed before, and I've been listening to the Beatles ever since they were the new thing (yes, I'm that old). If you're looking for the highest quality edition of this film, look no further.

The Beatles movie A HARD DAY'S NIGHT marks the 50th anniversary of the day when the Fab Four arrived in the U.S. and their first feature film ever. I remembered when I was a 3 years old, my parents, my relatives, and I went to the old drive-in theatre to watch A HARD DAY'S NIGHT. I became a huge Beatles fan at a young age. I saw the movie approximately 100 times. When I heard that the movie A HARD DAY'S NIGHT would be re-released and remastered on the Blu-ray/DVD Criterion Collection on June 24, 2014, it landed on my birthday. It was the best birthday present ever. I still love the Beatles. YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!

This movie was made to show the beginnings of the phenomenon known as Beatlemania. Still relevant and funny when viewed through the prism of over fifty years ago. The film has been credited as being very influential for its technical details. For those of a certain age, tell your children and grandchildren to forget about it being in black and white and enjoy learning a little about how you grew up. Phil Collins has claimed to be in the audience for some of the songs.

I have been a Beatles fan since I was a kid in the late 60's and I have been a fan of Criterion's products going back to the Laser disc era so my review is probably not unbiased. With that in mind, I have been wanting to get this bluray since it came out and now that I have it I am not disappointed. Great movie, great music, great transfer and great bonuses.

There's no question that this is one of the best musical comedies of all time. The natural comedic timing between all four Beatles is effortless and genius. You can see the innocent, playful connection that occurred prior to The Beatles parting ways. This Criterion release is a great nod to this classic and it needs to be in your collection.

They were concerned about being part of one of those pop star movies that go nowhere, man, so they got a creative director and some serious Help from professional actors. The result: a Beatles film that is just plain entertaining, funny and creative. There is a reason critics lauded this film, so see it for yourself. Oh yeah, and the music is great, too.

This movie is a must for any true Beatles fan! It is fun to see them in their first film and it gave those of us who were too young to be involed in Beatlemania a taste of what it was like. I enjoyed everything about this movie.
