I'm been an iPad user for years

iPad 2 was my first iPad and I was in love with the tech. Since then I've owned the Air and 2017 9.7 model. I always felt the 9.7" was perfect, but seeing the 12.9" size in stores had me wondering if it would be even better for me. Well I've been using it a month and I'm not so sure now. Watching videos is fantastic. I can keep it on my desk and everything is nice and big. Multitasking is great. Having 2 browsers open, plus another app as a swipe over is great and something I couldn't do in a usable way on my 9.7. Drawing with the Apple Pencil is also way better on a larger surface than smaller. It's also not as heavy as I feared (only .5 lb more), and pretty easy to grip and walk around the house with. So what don't I like. The on screen keyboard in landscape mode is too large. It's perfect if you are resting it on a flat surface, but I never type that way and makes it very difficult to type on the screen in my lap or on an angle. Using it in bed is bulky, hard to fit on my nightstand, and gives off a bright glow even with brightness on zero. I don't like how some websites stretch the whole screen and almost seem too large when I'm sitting on the couch. Finally, there are not many case choices compared to the smaller form factors which is disappointing. But overall this thing is super fast. I edit can edit video, photos, and write music and it works flawlessly. All apple needs to do is add trackpad support and this would be an amazing laptop replacement.

This I Pad pro has (so far) replaced my *home* laptop. I still have a machine for work. I had hoped to do this earlier in the I Pad lineup - but was disappointed with my wife's air a few years ago - in terms of screen size/and lack of file support (like .RAW image files). With the 12.9 pro of 2017 however this thing has a big enough screen - but remains portable. It's fast, reliable and has plenty of storage - in the days of cloud based storage or network accessible storage. The screen is perfect and has a nice wide color gamut (something I was looking at paying north of 1400$ for in a laptop) - which is great for my photo editing work. Photography is not my profession, but a long time hobby. Given that many modern cameras have wifi/Bluetooth - photo transfer is easy. I'm sure it be faster with the adapter given that the 2017 pro lightining port supports USB 3.0 speeds - but wireless transfer is easy and painless. Lastly the App Store an available software had always been limiting for me. There is still no photoshop sadly - but the "lightweight" adobe editors are good for the adobe familiar, but don't get you all the tools of photoshop. Affinity photo (2017 app) on the other hand has been very impressive on the I pad - I'm able to work with nondestructive layers and have many of the tools I'd find in photoshop. Pencil and keyboard are also very helpful depending on what you do, I don't draw often, but end up using the pencil as a "mouse" and the keyboard is great.

I purchased this after painstakingly comparing between this and Wacom products. it's difficult because there is no 100% perfect product for me (that would be a roll-able 42" flat pad with MacOS that is touch responsive). Here are the top selling points for me: the drawing responsiveness with the Apple Pencil is beyond any tablet I have ever experienced. While I would love a larger tablet, it is large enough not to feel too cramped (like the smaller 9.7"), it's very portable, and the display is fantastic (in fact, as a designer, I have moved to presenting from it, I can make notes about changes and picks with the Pencil as I go). I have yet to see any software or screen lag, it is just so fast. Downside: Adobe has only been focused on releasing toys for iOS when it comes to image-editing (Fortunately, there are a ton of great software titles that are great, including Procreate, Adobe Draw and Adobe PS Sketch and so many others). One more thing that makes up for Adobe's lag in releases is Astropad which converts the iPad Pro into basically a Cintiq like product working with your Mac: Photoshop solved (mostly, as it's not that portable, unless you are lugging you laptop as well).

I have owned many iPads including the iPad Pro before this model. I upgraded from the iPad Pro 128GB wifi model to the latest iPad Pro 256GB wifi model. At first, I thought the various features were not enough to upgrade over, but I have to say I'm glad that I did. The 120hz refresh rate is what gains you the 20 millisecond latency with the Apple Pencil. It makes a huge difference for artists like myself. Drawing is simply amazing and very fluid. For me it is just like drawing with pencil and paper. The Truetone display is okay to have, but don't be suprised if you find it unappealing at first; it's a feature mostly to be appreciated by artists and photo editors. The processing speed is huge, but you're not really going to notice a difference between the first gen iPad Pro (12.9") and this model. It's possible there will be some noticeable differences when iOS11 reaches the masses, but that will be for the pundits to review and make an assessment. Anyhow, I have always loved the ease of use with Apple's iPad. Great value, albeit a luxury item.

I am the first to admit that I gave Apple a hard time regarding the iPad Pro. In comparison the the Surface Pro, I said the iPad Pro could not compete. I was definitely wrong. The iPad Pro is an excellent device for productivity and getting things done. As an executive, I use it for near everything from working in Excel to using it for presentations. Unlike my Surface Pro (which I love), the iPad Pro crushes it in regards to battery life and a stability. My surface has failed me so many times in meetings that I wanted to throw it. My iPad Pro is always ready to go and has yet to fail me. The handwriting is the absolute best experience and never lags. What I like most about the iPad Pro is that the applications are built well. This shows that you do not need bloated software to get things done. No, I am not a graphic artist needing photoshop in its full capacity, but I can edit quite well with Affinity or Pixelmator. In short, I make business happen and this device helps me do that. I wholely recommend this device.

Now this is kind of subjective mainly because I’m an apple fan boy. That being said this has been so far one of my best investments into a depreciating asset. I originally owned a 2013 MacBook Pro 15”, people might think well why the trade. 50% because my MacBook was on its last legs, 50% because I never used the power that was inside it. It was just a basic college paper streaming device with extra power. The iPad Pro 12.9” is a great device for that exact reason. With the sale in of my old laptop I payed roughly $200 for my iPad and I don’t regret it at all. It does everything I ask it to and I’m hoping even more with iOS 11. I’m also planning to get an Apple Pencil which will make the experience even better. If your a college student limited money and would use a laptop for streaming and papers, the iPad Pro 12.9” is your best friend (in my opinion). I also use a keyboard case (Logitech).

Bought the iPad, really for work. But, meanwhile I also played some games. Well, at first two-three weeks of "playing" with it, is the fastest computer I have ever had. The apps starts like in a blink, Safari is much faster than my MacBook (which I should say is almost 3 year old, but still .....). Of course, I did not try to edit videos or something really processor intensive. But it works really well for what I need. And the Apple pencil (sold separately) is really, really (100x) great. The pencil on this tablet makes me feeling that a grand is worth the price. Talking about price, this is not the less expensive deal you can get, but is probably the best quality you can get in a tablet and a pencil (stylus). If you want the best, this is it. The size of the iPad, is a little bit big, but I got used with it and liked it, and when I use a smaller tablet I feel like I am getting on the phone. This is really the best tablet you can get, if you do not mind the size. A smaller iPad can fit you better, but in any case, if you think you need a pencil or a stylus, this is the best deal (forget MS Surface, I tried it).

I am a semi-retired design professional with more than 40 years of experience in the land planning, landscape architecture, architecture & construction industries. I offer that only to say that I grew up with and spent most of my career designing & drawing with pencil & pen on paper. While that will probably always be my preferred medium the iPad Pro with Pencil is as close to that experience as I’ve found digitally. I am also a self-professed tech nerd and always looking for any way to utilize tech to support or simplify my life and process. I coveted the iPad Pro since Apple introduced it a few years ago but didn’t feel it had become versatile enough to justify the price. Now however with the continued product improvements, introduction of iOS 11 and the many professional level apps available it became a no brainer for me especially given its portability. Combined with a wireless keyboard it can perform most of the lighter weight tasks of a laptop as well, increasing its versatility. It certainly doesn’t have the horsepower or app support to do 3D modeling or tasks of that nature but that is not it’s purpose. This is an “idea machine” and digital art platform!
