Low price, ASUS Android is tough to configure

If you're buying this phone at this price, you're looking for compromise. And that's what you get. The camera is poor, borderline unusable. There are lots of artifact and ghost images. Basically if anything moves when you take the shot, the photo is unusable. Now go outside and try to find a few seconds when *nothing* is moving. So it's not a camera. ASUS modify Android to gain battery life and durability, but the options they provide are poorly organized and often conflicting with each other. It can be a total pain to actually use any of the battery-extending options without disabling your phone. For example, multiple conflicting/competing options to spare precious battery lead to effectively disabling your phone ... phone calls don't come through (certainly not what anyone wants), text messages don't come through (not what anyone wants), App updates can't download even on a Wi-Fi network (definitely not what anyone wants). There are some good ideas from ASUS for extending battery life/durability, but they are so poorly executed, with no clear hierarchy of options and impact, that the only way to actually have a somewhat functional phone with real-time messaging and communications Apps is to disable all battery-saving options. So .. unfortunately with this phone, you get what you pay for. And you don't get a camera. And you don't get a battery-saving phone. You may get a battery-saving device of unknown usefulness, but it's certainly not a reliable phone/communications device. You may get lucky and stumble upon a configuration of all of their jumbled and conflicting options that actually saves some battery. It took me about 1 month. Good luck with that. But if you text or WhatsApp or Slack me ... don't expect a speedy reply -- I won't even see your message until the moment has passed.

      Great for my use

I love my Windows Phone but, of course, we all know that no one will write an app for one. It is very frustrating that the millions of us that own and love these phones are ignored. I went looking for a cheap phone to put apps on and possibly be a back up for my phone if necessary. I looked at Samsung but didn't want to spend the money. Looked at Huawei and liked them a lot but they have to be ordered. Didn't like the LG interface, it was not intuitive and seemed to be lacking in features I like. Best Buy didn't carry but a few of the most popular phones in the store. That was very disappointing. Happened on the Asus (which was on sale) and WAS available in the store so thought I would give it a try. I have not been disappointed. Battery lasts for days and I use it to play music/podcasts while I work (I have no interest in playing games). Others have complained about the interface but I like it. The interface makes sense and is easy to figure out. I put an SD card in it so have plenty of room and it can take one as large as a terabyte. I have a small embroidery business and I am using the phone to store pictures of items I have made to show to potential customers. A GOOD tablet with 32GB memory will be at least as expensive and is much larger so wouldn't fit easily into my purse. All in all, this phone is perfect for my needs. I didn't give it 5 stars though because I have never used it as a phone so can't review that part.

Mid level tech, but great for the price

Used to having flagship phones, but my wife opted to go with something less expensive so we set a limit of $300, but targeted $200. Also had to be unlocked and compatible with the major carriers. Anyhow, the camera is mediocre and screen is no where as crisp as the other, much more expensive, phones we've owned, but she's been really happy with it. I doubt Asus is making much in the way of profit on this phone given the materials cost compared to sell price, so the bang for the buck is really good. If you don't need the latest and greatest (and who are we kidding, most of us don't really use our smart phones in a way that can justify $500 to 1000), this is a great price point and gives you the flexibility to jump onto any network (it's even dual sim). Heck, you'll probably pay almost as much in insurance over two years on a flagship phone as you would to buy this one outright. Just food for though.

Dual sim, Speedy, long battery, easy setup.

Honestly, I could not believe how easy it was to change to this phone. I plugged in a SIM card that works with unlocked GSM phones, and I was ready to go. The dual SIM feature works great. I use the other SIM slot for foreign travel. The design is simple but clean. The battery life time is unbelievable. The first BIG Asus update went smoothly. In fact the only thing not top notch on this phone is the speaker, which is merely adequate. I didn't test the camera because I don't care about that. The display is very very sharp and the phone has a nice solid industrial feel to it. I am super pleased with my transition. I am using Consumer Cellular month-to-month plan. All my apps work fine. Next up is loading a VPN but thus far - perfect.

Alright, I feel badly because I gave an earlier review with only 3 stars. The phone did not deserve that. I kept getting ads whenever I unlocked the phone. Blamed it on the phone, but the problem was an app that I installed. Got rid of the app, problem went away. Worst part is, I really like the app. Anyway, the phone is easy to use, once I found a few built in apps that are really necessary, but were a bit hidden. Had to get used to doing things a little different from the last phone (like screen capture and editing photos), but that's to be expected when you change brands. This phone has double the internal memory of my old phone (32GB vs 16GB), so that helps. Overall it's a good phone.

      Great Phone

      • My Best Buy® MemberMember

The phone has been great during the month that I've had it. I would give it 5 stars if it weren't for the obnoxious ads that randomly pop up. I needed a new phone because the old one ran out of memory space, with only 16GB of internal memory (the new one has double that). The camera on the old phone also stopped working due to an unfortunate encounter with the effects of gravity (not the phone's fault). Now I have plenty of memory for adding new apps. I also like the fingerprint recognition feature. Initially, the feature was kinda Meh, but it's grown on me. Didn't have much luck with accessories for the phone at BB, but was able to find a nice case and display protectors at the website that begins with A and ends with mazon.

Great 2-sim functionality, design, wide angle cam

      • My Best Buy® MemberMember

Almost love this phone. A bit snappier would be nice. Can't seem to fast launch camera from locked phone (sleep) with double tap of power or volume button (I thought it was an Android feature--Asus offers double tap on fingerprint sensor but phone has to be unlocked and unlocking with fingerprint is effectively slower than pattern) Broke one in a bicycle accident, bought the same phone again without hesitation, but with protection plan this time :) I travel for work and need to use both sims ZenFone handles it well. Great wide angle second camera, but it is annoying and hard to switch to when outdoors in bright light.

      Great Dual Sim Phone

The major reason for purchasing the phone was the dual sim. I will be in Mexico for a couple of years and wanted to keep my US number and have a Mexican number without carrying two phones. This phone is better than most dual sims in that it allows you to receive or make calls on either sim. Most make you pick one active sim at a time. You can also set which one is the data sim. It definitely meets my needs and has a great battery life. Price is good also. Only down side is that cases and screen protectors are a bit hard to find, but a web search did the trick.
