Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band: Blood Brothers [DVD] [1996]

For Bruce Springsteen's reunion with his famous band, director Ernie Fritz captured the musician at work on one of his albums with Blood Brothers. The transfer for this documentary is presented in 1.33:1 full frame (the original aspect ratio), and looks very nice. The transfer suffers from typical "full screen-itis," which means some dirt, grain, and imperfections show up more prominently than on a widescreen transfer. However, this is a good looking picture with well rendered colors that should please most fans. A Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is included on this disc which fares very well. The rear speakers are engaged through most of the songs, and the bulk of the soundtrack is free of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc is a PCM Stereo mix in English, as well as an optional feature which allows the viewer to watch the feature with subtitled song lyrics or without. Unfortunately, Bruce Springsteen fans will be disappointed to learn that there are no extra features available on this edition of Blood Brothers.

Synopsis

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Blood Brothers
In 1995, as Bruce Springsteen was compiling his Greatest Hits album, he decided to record a handful of new songs for the package, and chose the occasion to reunite his fabled backing group the E-Street Band for the first time since 1989. The reassembled band spent several days together recording several Springsteen classics that had never appeared on an album along with a few new tunes; filmmaker Ernie Fritz was on hand to capture the rehearsals and the recording sessions, and Bruce Springsteen: Blood Brothers offers a fly-on-the-wall look at one of rock's greatest songwriters (and finest live bands) at work. Songs featured include "Murder Incorporated," "Secret Garden," "This Hard Land," the title tune, and eight others. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
