Good cinematic experience with minimal 4K upgrade
|Posted .Was very pleased with the packaging case for this item, being a modern take on the art piece The Scream. The HBO Miniseries is well made and a very authentic look into the biggest man-made disaster which occurred in 1986. Also a tribute to those who were affected and the spirit of the survivors is portrayed with much humanity. Image quality on the 4K disc is barely noticeable from the Blu-Ray however.

The most important Miniseries in years
|Posted .Owned for 4 months when reviewed.Odds are by now you have seen or heard other critics/reviewers talk about this serries. And rightly so this is a fascinating docudrama about the Chernobyl disaster. I have seen and enjoyed many of HBO's mini serries band of Brothers the Pacific from earth to the moon. I think this one is the best of those ....now that being said it is not the easiest to watch with the events of this disaster being displayed in all of their horrifying detail. However in these times it's likely the most important Miniseries that has come out recently. I'll talk about some specifics below. Plot: the very first episode as most people have talked about is one of the greatest hours of TV in history. To sumerize the plot without spoilers is the following: an explosion in reactor no4 of the Chernobyl power station starts a crisis with far reaching implications. It is up to 3 people 2 of which are real one who is a amalgamation of a bunch of real people. This group includes 2 scientists and a career bureaucrat who must not only extinguish the crisis but navigate the entire Soviet system from the KGB to the divisions of labor to solve the problem and discover the truth about what happened. The acting is amazing it is a huge credit to Jared Harris who has usually played bad guys(fringe, the expanse, Sherlock Holmes 2) to be this good at a character who is the protagonist as it is following him we get most of the mini series run time. In terms of quality definitely get the Blu Ray for best picture I'm a little disappointed by the small amount of special features but this normal for physical media these days. Music: the soundtrack was composed by I'll just buther her name ....but in case she just won the Oscar for joker. She also was a cellist for sicario and composed the score for sicario 2 it is absolutely haunting and perfect for this as a separate note it's worth listening to on its own. There are some historical inaccuracies but that's true of any docudrama. What this show did was nail the feel and scale of the disaster. Having visited Russia I can say that the look of the show is as close to how things actually are the production design and location s are on point. To sumerize this is a short 5part miniseries something that you can watch in an afternoon however this show will test you some of the things in it are horrible but they did happen or at least a version of them happened. I would say it is not a feel good serries. But if you are fascinated by history or want to see fantastic performances then by all means watch this show.

Riveting
|Posted .Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. From the opening segment this film takes you on a roller coaster ride to nuclear meltdown as the bumbling crew leader conducts a certification test during a midnight shift, ignoring all reasonable objections from his reluctantly obedient engineers and control room staff. The pace of the suspense only quickens in the aftermath as they refuse to believe a meltdown has even occurred sending inspection staff into the heart of the open reactor, relegating them to becoming walking dead men. Finally the fight begins to tame this unthinkable beast they have created. Compelling from start to finish!

One of the Best Mini-Series Ever to Air on TV
|Posted .Owned for 1 week when reviewed.I would recommend this to a friendChernobyl is an incredibly unique show. From the writer of the Hangover sequels comes what is possibly the best work of historical fiction I've ever seen. Brilliantly acted and shot, the show amounts to what is basically a five hour panic attack. Dread creeps in from the first shot and doesn't let up until the finale. Not to mention that the shows overall theme of the cost of lying rings more true a mere year and a half later than when it premiered. Plus, the steelbook release has what is quite possibly the greatest alternate artwork ever made for one of these releases, drawing from Munch's 'The Scream'.

A real must see for every scientist, and student!
|Posted .Owned for 1 week when reviewed.Speaking as a retired Master Instructor assigned to the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, Battlefield Medical Operations Branch, I honestly believe that this amazing film SHOULD be studied by every Science Student, Environmentalist, Science Teacher, Emergency Manager, and all Medical Personnel who needs to really understand the nightmare created by the design and explosion of this Soviet RBMK reactor. It was hard to watch but it is a true representation of what actually happened at Chernobyl and in the surrounding countries. The coverage of the massive international spread of radiation and required decontamination was honest yet appalling in it's scope. The devastating medical effects of significant radiation exposure to all personnel were gruesome and accurately depicted in this film. The heroes in this film were true heroes indeed and represent only a small portion of those involved in the response process that saved thousands if not millions of lives. This movie is the worst type of horror movie because it is true. With all the nuclear reactors currently in operation on this planet...to be forewarned, is to be forearmed. Always remember that the containment sarcophagus built around the crippled reactor was only designed to last 100 years and the clock is ticking. This is NOT a horror movie designed for entertainment... This tale is very real, the threat is very real, and the hazards shown have not changed at all. I would have given this movie 10 stars, if I could. Be warned, it will change your thinking forever!

A powerful miniseries!
|Posted .Owned for 10 months when reviewed. This is a powerful miniseries about the aftermath of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the ex-soviet union in 1986. It's an incredible drama of government cover-up and corruption, was well the same government moving heaven and earth to prevent a radioactive holocaust. It's the story of extremely brave people trying to do the right thing. You really should watch this miniseries and see for yourself why it won awards.

My favorite media of 2019
|Posted .Owned for 2 months when reviewed. What is the cost of telling lies? Chernobyl answers this question in heartbreaking detail. This series explores the cost of lies, selfish behavior, and a refusal to acknowledge truth because of personal inconvenience. Likewise, it shows the brave few willing to risk life and limb and take personal responsibility to fix larger than life problems. Excellently paced storytelling and characterization tell the story from all sides and a grand finale reveals all. Be sure to catch the companion podcast made by HBO; it's a worthwhile behind the scenes companion piece.

A typo THAT bad? Really!
|Posted .Owned for 1 week when reviewed.I would recommend this to a friendOne of the best limited series of all time! First, before I forget, after each episode, listen to the HBO podcast that they put out on each episode as the creator/writer explains in detail how accurate much of it was while also explaining where liberties were taken. It's hugely informative and better than any other HBO podcast out there. The steelbook itself is insanely amazing MINUS the one huge issue that I cannot believe got through edition, a massive grammar flub: "An HBO A 5-part Miniseries." Ummm... what? How in the WORLD did this get by anyone with even a second grade education? It's been made fun of in various forums, and it is shameful, but it's all we have, so given that, it's still a must own. Nevertheless, it lowers it from a five star down to a four.
