    Synopsis

"Welcome to Deadwood...a hell of a place to make your fortune." These are the words that serve as greeting for saddle-weary former lawman Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) as he rides into the illegal Dakota Territory settlement of Deadwood, a scant few weeks after Custer's defeat at the Little Big Horn. Before long, Bullock makes the acquaintance of another displaced Westerner, the cynical, burnt-out gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) -- and not long after that, both men have had their first run-in with town boss Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), the confident, corrupt owner of the Gem Saloon (an establishment largely populated by flint-hearted whores). Thus begins season one of the iconoclastic HBO Western series Deadwood, arguably the most realistic program of its kind ever seen on American television. In the 11 episodes that follow the season opener, a group of vicious outlaws tries to foment another Indian war; Swearengen's status as the lord of the flies on the Deadwood dungheap is challenged by a Chicago "syndicate" (yes, they had them as far back as 1876); a valuable land claim held by feisty, wealthy frontierswoman Alma Garret (Molly Parker) becomes the focus of a deadly serious power struggle; the notorious Black Jack McCall (Garret Dillahunt) kills Hickok during a poker game (quite a jolt, to knock off one of the series' main characters so early in the game!); Deadwood is ravaged by an epidemic, during which the rambunctious but compassionate Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) becomes a legend; Bullock is marked for death after bringing a murderer to heel; Swearengen is double-crossed by duplicitous "working girl" Trixie (Paula Malcomson); the town's criminal element tries to block annexation of the Dakotas, which would bring much-despised law and order to the territory; a minister finds himself less welcome in town than an opium dealer; and at season's end, Seth Bullock becomes Deadwood's official sheriff -- a position that offers neither job security nor much chance for survival. ~ Hal Erickson

While Game of Thrones is currently must see TV, and I own all the seasons (blu-ray still crushes cable, satellite and streaming when it comes to quality due to compression) but HBO's prime for me was a decade plus back, the years of the Sopranos, Rome, The Wire and my favorite - Deadwood. The blu-ray looks and sounds just phenomenal. It's filmic, dark and gritty when it needs to be, and bright and antique looking almost at other places. The sound is uncompressed and well mixed, and there's a nice bundle of bonus material featured for those interested in diving in deeper. One of the most interesting (and disheartening) bonus features is creator David Milch walking around the amazing set that was used to film Deadwood, talking about where he would have liked to take the next seasons and where characters might have gone.

The card hand is there; Hickok, McCall and others are there in the correct historical relationships; Custer has died off camera; and the Sioux, usually talked about rather than seen, are there. But, all that said, this is generally a period novel for television that is more about the atmosphere of a frontier boom town than really historical. It is entertaining, although more graphic than is really necessary for the story and, for that matter, more graphic than seems actually believable. Still, I would recommend it to either mature or jaded audiences.

HBO has consistently produced the most amazing series. Deadwood is a crystal-clear picture of life in the primitive, rugged old west. It is a brutal, harsh depiction of life without our comforts and conveniences. The characters become, everyone of them, as real as your own family and friends. Love them or hate them, you can almost feel them. It should give you a greater appreciation of just how hard life really was. The language is coarse and vulgar, elaborate and convoluted in turns, but certainly never dull. The only negative to Deadwood is that there were not 20 seasons or a movie.

This is an unblinking look of the late 19th century western territory that is today South Dakota. It's a society dominated by violent white men on both sides of the law, a society in which Native Americans, Chinese, blacks and women are assumed inferior. The series is raw, profane, and lawlessly violent, and thus seems very authentic. The characters are complex, the good becoming at times the bad, and the villains showing at times a sense of caring for others. The series has only 3 seasons, although it deserves to be a longer series.

Comes from a network that makes great series and this one didn't disappoint. Deadwood was a mining town in the 1800's that wasn't part of the U.S. or any territory. It was the gold, and lawlessness that brought all types of savory and unsavory characters together in this series. Many stories , lives intertwined here. Strongly recommend if you like cowboy movies. Not many seasons, not enough to finish the story, in my opinion, but hopefully someday HBO will revisit Deadwood..

This is one of my favorite HBO shows. The first season is especially grand, some of the best story telling around. Excellent characters, realistically human, and a wonderful ensemble story. The Blu-ray edition is excellent, the details, the colors in the video are outstanding, you can see the grime and dirt and all the details in the sets and costumes. Audio is excellent also. Highly recommended.

It had been several years since I last watched this show. After seeing it for such a great sale price, I had to get it. I forgot how fantastic it was. The only thing negative to say is that it ended to abruptly and should not have been cancelled. I hope the talks of a reunion movie actually happen this time. Great packaging and bonus content in the box set, as well.

Love the Dead Wood series! Even though some of the slang "terms" that are used in the series, I find a little suspect for that era, the overall dialogue keeps your attention. You hange on every conversation and engagements of the characters. I watched the series while it was on HBO... but had to revisit once the box set was released. Very disappointed that it didn't carry on for more than 3 seasons.
