I had previously owned a Dyson for over 5 years, but the vacuum was clearly needing to be replaced. I had considered buying a newer model, but the prices swayed me to purchase a comparable Hoover instead. This was a mistake.
The Hoover model overheated and began to smoke in less than a month. I have a dog who sheds quite a bit, so vacuuming is necessary to keep hair lying around to a minimum, and a vacuum that wasn't working was something that was going to have to go. Fortunately, I was able to return the vacuum to Best Buy and get a full refund. That same week they coincidentally had a small price sale on this Dyson model. As I said earlier, the price was steep, but my prior experience with my last Dyson was very good overall, and the brief experience I had with the Diablo Hoover was enough to convince me that the higher price was reflective of the quality of the Dyson.
The dust collecting canister is much bigger than the previous model I had, allowing me now to vacuum my two floor house in one go, rather than having to stop and empty the canister two or three times like my older model. It also has a much longer power cable, which is great for basically the same reasons. The suction on the vacuum is very strong, though I am very careful to use it on rugs, as the beater and suction do seem like they could be too much for it.
The attachments do work well, though there aren't enough storage compartments on the vacuum for all of them, which is disappointing. I know I have extra accessories for the wand, but I don't feel like having to go searching for them in the closet. The design of the wand is a bit strange. While similar to how my previous model contained the wand in the handle, you flip the top of the handle on this model, and it reveals the hose/wand. It's a minor variance, but confused me a bit as to how to get the wand out. Suction on the wand is great, which is an issue I had with the Hoover vacuum, as it seemed to struggle to get clumps of hair or debris up.
My biggest issue with the vacuum is the weight. It's much harder to vacuum my staircase, lifting the much bulkier, taller and heavier vacuum. I'm a woman in my 60s. I can still lift this, but I'm much more cautious and slower than I was with the older model. Like I said, it's great that the power cable is longer and that the canister holds more, I just didn't expect the weight added to be that much greater. You don't need the strength of the Hulk to lift it, but it can be tight on stairs is what I'm getting at.
Overall it's a great product. It cleans well, addressed things I didn't like about my old model (short power cable and small canister) at the cost of size and weight, but I can manage that. The price was high, but it hasn't had any electrical issues and is keeping my floors fairly dog hair free.
Keep a lookout for a sale on the product if it interests you. Hopefully I get at least 5+ years out of it like my last one.
