Synopsis

Escaflowne
In this animé feature based on the popular Japanese television series, Hitomi is a high school student who is trying to come to terms with a severe case of depression. When her spirits are at their lowest, Hitomi makes a psychic connection with Van, the young king of the nation of Gaia, located on another planet visible in the night sky of Earth. Gaia has been brought to the brink of war by the evil Black Dragon Clan, and, while the nearby nation of Abaharaki wishes to form an alliance with Gaia for their mutual protection, Van is a leader who prefers to act on his own. Hitomi finds herself transported to Gaia, where she becomes a valuable if unlikely ally to Van; as the Black Dragon Clan advances, Van discovers that Hitomi may hold the key to the magical dragon armor of Escaflowne, the weapon that would make Gaia invincible. Escaflowne (also advertised as Escaflowne the Movie: A Girl in Gaia) features Kelly Sheridan as the voice of Hitomi; the voice cast for the American release version also includes Kirby Morrow, Brian Drummond, and Paul Dobson. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Escaflowne the Movie is essentially the series reduced into a single movie. Kind of hard to knock 26 episodes into less than 2 hours, though. Still, this does a fantastic job of doing just that. Wouldn't recommend watching the movie if you haven't seen the anime series, but it wouldn't do too much harm. The series gives you a lot more info on what is going on with the world(s#. Synopsis is already in the description, so I won't go into that. The artwork in this movie is incredible. Straight from the get-go when Van dives out of the sky, lands on a sky-ship, and completely annihilates the crew on board; this movie had me drooling from the start. Even better is the music. Any time you have a soundtrack composed by Yoko Kanno, you know that you're in for a wonderful symphony of music. One of my all-time favorite tracks, "Dance of Curse II", is utterly haunting and inspring at the same time with its orchestral performance similar to "Liberi Fatali" #the opening theme from Final Fantasy VIII). Almost forgot what initially drew me to this series! The mechs! The Escaflowne and other mechs are just incredible. Especially when Van begins to turn a little to the dark side and Escaflowne becomes shrouded in black...overload! The only complaints I could really raise are the lack of any relationship/romance between Van and Hitomi which was forming in the anime series. Also...the noses...they're just too long and crooked. Always bothered me :/ All-in-all, this is a superb movie filled with action, some superpowers, and mechs! If you can find it, try to get the original Ultimate Edition that was originally released. Has tons of extras as well as the entire soundtrack on individual discs.

I really enjoyed this movie. The graphic images are great, considering this movie is 16 years old. The two main characters are very different. One wants to commit suicide, while the other is full of vengeance towards his enemies. This movie has a lot to squeeze in in 95 minutes. Special features are good as well.

A mystical land, magical soldiers, and a mythical dragon armor... and it all hinges on a shy high school track student. Will she accept her calling as The Wing Goddess or will she fade away?

Essentially a re-imagining of the Escaflowne series. This has nothing in common with the series except the names of the characters and their general designs. The plot is kind of lacking, but the animation is gorgeous and almost worth the price of admission.

This movie is only based on the characters and plot ideas of the Escaflowne TV show. It is something beautiful to look at. The animation is incredible and joy to watch. The plot is a little bit out there and suffers from being rushed.

Wished that the female character had more action input into the story. Disappointed that she basically was just there until the very end where she interacted more. May have to watch again, maybe I missed something.

supplementary to the tv series blu-ray release! if you have the tv series, get this to see a redesigned and reimagined work and the beautiful music score by yoko kanno is good enough alone for the price of admission

The anime selection at best buy has increased significantly. Every time I try to buy this particular movie online it's so expensive, but it was so easy to find at best buy.
