Synopsis

Flags of Our Fathers
Clint Eastwood's adaptation of the non-fiction book Flags of Our Fathers concerns the lives of the men in the famous picture of soldiers raising the American flag over Iwo Jima during that historic WWII battle. Battle scenes are intercut with footage of three of the soldiers - played by Ryan Phillipe, Jesse Bradford, and Adam Beach -- who survived the battle going on a goodwill tour of the United States in order to sell war bonds. Many evening they are forced to reenact their famous pose, something each of them finds more and more difficult to do as they suffer from survivor's guilt. Eastwood frames the story by having one of the men's grown son (Tom McCarthy) interview his father's old comrades in order to find out more about what happened to his father. Eastwood followed this film with Letters from Iwo Jima, a second film about the battle of Iwo Jima, but told from the Japanese perspective. Flags of Our Fathers was produced by Eastwood and Steven Spielberg. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

The video is more than a recounting of the battle of Iwo Jima. It illustrates the mental pressure on the marines dealing with the fear and horror experienced during the fight. The video goes on to explore the additional problems those marines, designated as heroes, during the raising of the flag on Mt Surabachi, have living with the expectations for themselves as well as placed on them by others.

This great film from Clint Eastwood concern three American soldiers (Ryan Phillippe, Adam Beach, & Jesse Bradford) who go home after Iwo Jima, where the government sends them around the country putting up on display as heroes, a designation they don't exactly agree with, as many of their fellow flag raisers died without fanfare. Great acting and directing are just two assets of what was just one half of Clint's great Iwo Jima opus.

This film isn't perfect, it's very flawed in fact. There's problems with the way the story is told and it doesn't focus so much on the horrors of war or the fighting, but more on the politics of war. If you're looking for the film with action and one that is intriguing, watch the sister film: Letters from Iwo Jima, which is a true masterpiece.

A young cast of men are put on an Island to eradicate the Japanese forces that are bunkered down and ready for a fight. Don’t blink when the storming of the beaches or you will be sorry. It looks just like the movie ‘Saving Private Ryan’ on of the events of June 1944, see Battle of Normandy beginning battle.

A Fantastic Eastwood film, the story of war, and (to me) how it's not all it's cracked up to be, and how the enemy is just as scared as you are. Don't forget, this has a sister movie, "Letters from Iwo Jima" Absolutely a must see together, the two movies tell both sides of the story.

While it is a 2 disc set and all of the special features are in 1080p, I just think they could have used some more special features with this release. The film has stunning picture and audio quality and is a great tale as we have come to expect from Clint Eastwood's films.

However, I love historically based movies, so I'm really looking forward to watching the movie. On a business note, I bought this particular movie in the clearance section. It only cost five dollars and it is in pristine condition.
