Buy the extended warranty on all dehumidifiers!

It’s embarrassing how a person can’t find a quality, dependable, long-lasting dehumidifier anymore. I’ve purchased various brands of dehumidifiers throughout my life for different homes. They are getting less dependable all the time. Consumer Reports is correct that dehumidifier manufacturer’s quality control stinks and dehumidifiers are being build to last a maximum of 2 to 4 years. We are not dealing with a $50 item here. They should not be designed and manufactured as a throw away product that quits working in a couple years or less but they do. I am not big extended warranty purchaser, but with dehumidifiers I make an exception. I purchased the 4 year warranty...longest one they got. I highly suggest you do too. Nobody wants to work on dehumidifiers any more. Most just tell you that it would be cheaper to just go buy a new one. They are plastic pieces of junk. My last dehumidifier died in less than 3 years. Not sure about this particular brand/model since I just got it today. First impression is it heats the room up more than any dehumidifier I have ever owned. It raised the temperature in my finished basement game room by 10 degrees in about 5 hours of operation. It is air conditioned too. That is a big concern. I completely understand that dehumidifiers will increase room temps some but not this much. I have heard and owned louder and softer dehumidifiers so I will give it a mid-range rating on the noise while running. I do not like where the air leaves this dehumidifier in the back and not the front. Not sure where to place this in my basement gameroom. Can’t put close to a wall. Pretty decent amount of water collected. Finally, I leave you with this solid advise...purchase the longest extended warranty on any dehumidifier you buy. They are the worst dependable type of appliance made today.

Consumer Reports recommended this model and it was readily available in a store near me. My previous Frigidaire dehumidifier lasted 16 years. I was impressed with that service life to keep my basement dry. Reviews have stated that this and all other dehumidifiers will die within 2 to five years due to fatal electronic failures. This is now typical for all appliances unfortunately. They don't make them like they used to and Frigidaire is now owned by Electrolux to boot. Will have to see how long this model will last. Durability was not rated for dehumidifiers by Consumer Reports which was disappointing but is indicative that manufactures are making things to throw away and not to last. I did buy the 4 year store warranty due to other reviews stating that this model will die within a 2 to 5 year time period. Read the warranty! It is working as expected for now, but will have to see if it will stand the test of time. Have owned it for a month and counting. There are a few things about this model that I do not like. The bucket that collects water is horribly small for this unit, only 2 gallons or 16 pints! Best option is to have it drain through a hose which is located on the left hand side of the unit to a floor drain. The worst design flaw with this model is the air intake is at the rear of the unit and not at the front where the bucket is. With this in mind the unit will be taking in air from the wall side so you will need a lot of room between the wall and the unit. Bad engineering, the intake should be at the front facing toward the center of the damp room. The discharged air flows out of the right hand side of the unit. This units layout may not be the best option for your situation so give it a think over. My old Frigidaire had the air intake in the front over the bucket with the air discharge on the left and hose drain on the right. Consider where you will be placing your dehumidifier, the air intake, the air exhaust and drain position before purchasing. Good luck.

MY ENVIRONMENT I live in Austin, Texas. The humidity in the Austin area is about in the middle (on a range from El Paso Desert to Houston Bayou). My apartment had been vacant for a few months before I moved in, in January 2017. The apartment is 665 square feet. It did not have any problems with mold or humidity or mildew odors when I moved in. My apartment is in an older building that is well-cared for and clean. The bathroom does not have a vent, so shower humidity does not have an outlet. REASONS FOR BUYING THIS DEHUMIDIFIER I bought the 70-pint dehumidifier after moving in to ensure the apartment did not develop problems and to help control allergens. (My last dehumidifier malfunctioned after perhaps a year or two.) The 50-pint could probably have suited my small apartment very well, but I like having the stronger unit. RUNNING THE UNIT The instructions suggested running the unit on "continuous" mode for a couple of days, particularly for basements. I didn't really need to do this, because I didn’t have any problems or bad odors, but I did run the unit in continuous mode for two days. The unit ran very well. After letting the unit run in continuous mode for the first two days, I set the unit at 35% humidity, automatic. I run it twenty-four hours a day. The display shows that humidity stays in the 35-40% range. The unit cycles off automatically when the area reaches 35% humidity and cycles back on when the humidity increases. The unit also cycles off when the reservoir is full and cycles back on when I reinsert the emptied reservoir. The reservoir has a handle that makes it very easy to empty---much easier to empty than the Kenmore I had owned previously---and is fairly secure in preventing spills. I placed the unit in the middle of my apartment. I always have many fans---desktop and floor fans, in addition to ceiling fans, and including a desktop fan I always run in the bathroom to reduce humidity. The multiple fans keep the air circulated, which helps the unit keep humidity down throughout the apartment. SUMMARY This dehumidifer works perfectly for my home and needs.

I'll never know how on earth my mother's basement got to a 70% humidity level, but it did. What's no surprise, is that it was time to get a dehumidifier. I'm talking bordering on squishy carpet, UGH. In between my gagging, I looked to Bestbuy.com to find out what her options were. Turns out, a lot of people must be having their own debate as to whether they live in the U.S. or in some tropical rainforest, as this appeared to be the only model available for pickup that day -- oh, well, I'll take it!! Mom and I rushed there and bought it. This sucker cleared out our muggy basement in a few days flat!! Holey Moley this sucker is awesome! The collection tray is easy to access, but if you prefer, you can route the water out a window or perhaps into your drain using the included hose. What I like most about this unit, besides its efficiency, is that you can program it to a specific humidity level. This dehumidifier will work until it reaches that level, then shut off, when it detects humidity rising beyond the level you have set, it kicks back on and gets to work clearing the air! I can't imaging all the things that can fester in a humid basement and I don't want to. My mother doesn't find this model noisy or annoying at all, as I see some people report -- granted, it is kept on the complete opposite side of the basement from her bedroom. All in all, just don't run it on high I suppose if you don't want some noise. Anyhow, embrace drier air, and healthier breathing with this Frigidaire!!!

Humidity in my basement reached 70%, so I did some research and bought this unit. I also purchased the 4-year extended warranty after reading about the reliability problems many owners have had with dehumidifiers from virtually all the manufactures. So far, it has worked well. Humidity is down to 45% and the musty odor is nearly gone. Issues to consider: If you have a large basement, the unit will work more effectively if you use it in combination with a fan like the 20-inch Lasko Wind Machine. The unit makes a fair amount of noise, like a window air conditioner. If you're watching TV in the same room, the noise level can be distracting. The air intake is on the rear and it discharges warm dry air on the right side, which limits the options for convenient and effective placement. The water reservoir fills up quickly - I had to empty it every six hours during the first week and every 8 - 10 hours afterward during summer. That routine gets old very fast. Use the drain attachment if feasible. The built-in humidistat gives accurate humidity readings after the unit runs for 10 - 15 minutes. When the compressor cycles off, the readings can be 10 - 20% higher than the actual humidity in the room (I purchased separate ThermoPro temperature/humidity meters to verify this). Lastly, I recommend plugging the unit into a good surge protector. Most owners who've reported problems online with dehumidifiers say the electronic controls are prone to malfunction more often than the compressor.

I briefly researched this purchase and the Fridgidare was the best rated dehumidifier on several websites. I got the 70 pint model as I have approx. 1800sf of living space. The indoor humidity reached 72% this morning and has been averaging 65% for well over a week. I've had this thing running for a little over 3 hours and it's already filled the water collector container nearly 1/2 full and brought the humidity down to 58%. With the potential damage to the home, namely to my pricey laminate flooring and the harmful health issues that arise with high indoor humidity levels, this purchase was a no brainer. With the fan on high, it's not obnoxiously loud and being winter, the return air coming out of it is close to room temperature (68 degrees#. I like the auto shut off feature and the alarm that tells you the water container is full. With my floor, water spills if not cleaned up right away, would ruin it. It is a very nice looking item, and while a bit heavy #52 lbs or so) it has a very sturdy handle on top to not only lift it out of the box easily, but to move it around when needed. I'm impressed with features such as setting a desired humidity level, 3 fan settings and a timer. It easily runs on a 15A circuit if that's all you have available but a 20A would probably be a better option. Electricity is expensive in my part of California, so I'm hoping the EnergyStar rating keeps that still unknown in check. Realistically, with my only other option being running my a/c with 50 degree outside temp, whatever it is it will be worth it. If you're like me and can't afford a sophisticated humidity control system in your home, this appliance is the best bang for your buck.

Removes humidity after storms drenched house

During the Pineapple Express rains in 2/17, the siding on my house got wet, swollen and leaked. Inside the house, the humidity was very high while it dried out. This dehumidifier has routinely removed over a gallon of water every day from the air in the living room. The dry air is much more comfortable and assists in the ultimate goal of drying out the house. We have another dehumidifier in the Master Bedroom (50 pint) and it is slower to remove the excess humidity than the 70 pint model. Normally, I empty them both at the same time; once per day. The 70 pint will have a full bucket, while the 50 pint will be less than a quarter full. After this episode from the storms is repaired, I plan on keeping the de-humidifiers right where they are now. The living room appliance takes moisture out of the air from cooking, running dishwasher, and washing. The 50 pint dehumidifier is fabulous for drawing out the acute, high humidity generated by the long bath/showers I enjoy. Without it, the condensation from bathing makes small streams of water run down the walls and windows. The water then slips under the edge of the flooring and spreads which can cause mold, support insects, and damage the sub floor. This must be prevented! We have positioned each dehumidifier under an air conditioner for the summer. Since it ejects warm and dry air, in the summer the rooms become too warm. I have both the air conditioners and de-humidifiers on constant operation and automatic economy mode. This way, I can achieve a stable environment within which to rehabilitate my health.

Recovering from 2-1/2' of water in my house from Hurricane Harvey, I needed help with moisture and smell. Based on the many positive reviews on this Frigidare 70 PT dehumidifier I decided to give it a try. Super simple to use (64 year old female) right out of the box. Getting it out of the box was the hardest part..packed very well and quite heavy! The unit is on wheels and a handle so wheeled it straight into first room to start drying it out. Mind you my walls are stripped down to the studs so no interior blocks or doors. There is no standing water anywhere, fans have been running for 5 weeks so all "looks" dry. I Plugged the unit in at 11PM and checked it at 9AM next morning. It had pulled almost a full 70 Pints (8 gallons) out of that one large room. We are on the TX Gulf Coast so we live with high humidity 98% of the time. This room feels amazing, dryer than I've felt in awhile and air feels clean. I'm going back to purchase another for the back part of the house! It's very, very simple to operate, easy instructions and easy to dump the basin (or you can opt to run continuous drain line). Awesome product!!
