A: Yep, take the port door off. It's no longer water proof in any way but if you want to use a Mic that shouldn't matter. Keep in mind, the Gopro Mic adapter is a terrible product. Just look at the reviews and complaints. I did and bought one anyway, knowing what I was getting into, and because there is no option yet. There is a constant clicking noise in my audio when I use it depending on the position of the cord and plug going into the port. If I'm careful I can eliminate it by pressing the plug in while recording. Good luck!
A: You will need the adapter. There is no 3.5 mm audio jack on the Hero 5. You will need to plug the adapter into the usb-c port to create a line in for your mic to get better sound for your videos. You could also just use your phone as an external audio source to use the mic you have and edit the sound together in post production. The adapter is a ridiculous and bulky piece of tech that negates the small and highly portable features of the gopro camera.

A: Yes, one end is usb-c male and the other is usb-c female and 3.5mm female, but beware, keep your box and all contents incl as you may need to return it several times before you get one that works properly. The plug is loose and causes various noises to be heard on recorded audio.
