      A Great Machine

After having some problems with another brand (which I had bought 6 months ago,) I looked into buying another laptop. This time I wasn't going to buy the super cheap one that had little ram and HD space, I wanted one that I knew would work for me for a number of years. I had looked into 2-in-1s, but I really didn't need one that went into tablet mode, as I already had a tablet. I didn't need one that was 15" or more, as I wanted lighter portability. The only HP that I had owned previously was nice at first, but then slowed down to a craw. After checking ones out at different stores, I kept getting drawn to this one. This one has fit my needs and desires perfectly. Even though not the fastest in starting up because I it has a SATA drive, I can't complain. It isn't too small like I found with the 11" ones that I had owned, nor is it to big to carry around. The sound on it is great and I have only had the volume at 100% once, as I wanted to know how loud it can get. The weight is really nice, where with a larger laptop one can feel like they are lifting weights carrying it around and a small one can feel so like at times that one can easily forget that you can drop it.. It is not to big to be trying to use on an airplane, on public transit or in a car. My only problems with this is that the fan intake is located on the bottom, so if I place it on something soft like my bed covers, the fan can become loud and the bottom will get hot. It also doesn't have a super camera, but I rarely have used it. The touch-pad is sensitive, so that is something to get used to. Other than that, after using it for a month, I have no complaints for what I am using it for. For me it has been well worth the price.

      6 Months in Needed Repair

tldr - Would not recommend, hinge broke quickly resulting in damaged exterior and insistence on HP's part to not cover it under general manufacturer's warranty. I've had laptops since I was 12 years old for school and video gaming purposes, so I know how to care for a laptop and prevent damages and I notice when something isn't working as intended so as to fix it before it becomes a bigger issue. Less than 6 months the hinge on the right broke, which caused the computer to open reluctantly, the screen started popping out, and the exterior protecting the back of the screen cracked by the hinge. The customer service at HP was very reluctant to provide any sort of support, and in the end we had to foot the $200 bill to repair the back of the screen cover damages, even though we thought it was fairly clear that a defective piece in the hinge was the cause. The geek quad crew in the best buy we bought it from agreed that it was not our fault and we still got stuck with the repair bill because the warranty doesn't cover any exterior physical damage. Will not be buying HP again. This was my first HP laptop, and we took advantage of a pretty good deal on this laptop with specs that were more than sufficient (on paper) for our needs. I figured I might at some point upgrade the RAM if it were a little slow. i3 is generally ideal to prevent laptop overheating, 500GB memory fine as long as you have an external for large files (which you should have for backup anyways). Did not expect to have to spend an extra 200 just to have a laptop that actually opens without the screen popping out. Not happy.

Just what I was looking for

Let's just put it this way, this is a great value for a good computer. Do not expect a $1,000+ value laptop for ~$500. Best advice, know what you need out of your machine before you purchase. My work gives me $1500/year to purchase technology equipment for work, even then, I didn't spend it all (obviously). I needed something portable (but not too small), decent performance to run word, excel, do some conference calls and VPN into my work computer while out in the field. This seems to check all of the boxes. Weirdest thing though, the specs at the store and online say 6gb of RAM, but the side of the box it came in said 8gb of RAM and also the device specifications in the settings also say 8gb of RAM. Runs pretty smooth. Good overall machine if you're not a gamer but do have lots of tabs open and are multitasking between a bunch of items. I have only had this for a couple of weeks, but if it holds up for a while I might bump it up to 5 star. Only Con I can think of is the HDD is only 500gb, whereas most in this price range (+-$100) come with about 1TB. Either that or put a small 128gb SSD and this thing would be a rocket. I think it they added the small SSD and bumped up the price ever so slightly, this thing would be hard to keep on the shelf!

This device is ideal for students or individuals on business travel. Its light weight and easily portable. Has excellent storage space for basic docs and small media files. The fact its a 2 in 1 lab top/tablet was the reason for purchasing. Originally had a screen/keyboard detachable device but wasn't impressed once using it. Touch screen is an absolute positive, when in lab top mode, makes scrolling much easier. Cons - Personally I'm not a fan of the keyboard size. I'm used to a 17'' laptop or basic desk top keyboard for number pad. External number pad is a must have for working with numbers (touchscreen somewhat helps but would still prefer number pad) Mouse pad is ok, but personally I'd rather use a mouse. An additional USB port wouldn't hurt (has two but a third would be helpful on opposite side as the two are so close together and also close to HDMI port). Definitely not a device for gaming or video's as the picture quality is avg which is really the only real disappointment with this device. Other than personal preferences and saverage picture quality, 5 Stars!

      Not that great...

I was excited to purchase this laptop and waited for it to be the deal of the day. Yesterday I bought it, took it home, did all required updates, downloaded the free 6-month protection program and was happy as can be (even though the updated took hours on my high speed internet). The problem with this computer is in the start up. My new laptop takes over 5 minutes to actually start up to where I can use it. Sometimes when I start it up, it does not get to the windows screen...just a black screen. I chatted with the HP service team and they said I have a defective laptop and since I am in my return period to bring it back. I'm bummed out. While I do like the 14 inch screen and other bells and whistles, the keys on the keyboard are noisy and loose, and the touch pad is a bit flimsy. I'm going to return this and look at other options. Just when I thought my search was over for my under $500 laptop. Disappointed!

Bottom line up front, don't buy this junk. Apparently HP is having issues with this particular model and needed to order parts to fix it. I've been out of a laptop for 20 days and counting. I had my device for about a two weeks before it started acting up. There were random freezes and shutdowns. By the time I had it setup to my liking 30 days had passed. A MONTH in and the random freezes and shutdowns had progressed to include startup failures. I tried troubleshooting with HP and after remedies the problems still occurred. Finally, I sent it in to HP for repair. They gave me an approximate fix time of 7-9 days. As of today I have been out of a laptop for 20 days and there still hasn't been any updates. If best buy would honor my return after 30 days I would do it in a heartbeat and go with a totally different computer company.

I waited for a awhile to write this review. For the money is a good little laptop. After I’ve taken it back 2 times for issues with head phone jack. The mic not working. And one time it wouldn’t turn on at all. Bestbuy was very helpful in exchanging. Now we have the keeper. Powerful little fella. I mean multitasking doesn’t seem to bog it down to bad. My daughter plays mindcraft on it and surfs internet with ease. Setup was easy enough for her to do it and she is 14. Although shes a smarty pants sometimes.for the money you get what you expect. Drawing on it isn’t bad either although I’ve never seen the purpose of and convertible laptop she likes and the construction of it doesn’t seem like it’s gonna break easily. Would recommend the warranty. Hp service is decent although you have to go to great lengths to report an issues just get you the geek squad protection and circumvent the nonsense. 4 stars because of the exchange part 5 stars for the product.

When deciding on a new laptop the only thing I had to have was a touchscreen. After reading several reviews about this laptop, I decided to purchase it because it seemed capable of what I needed it for. It's only been 5 days and I've only used it 3 of those days but I absolutely hate this laptop. The startup time is horrible and the response time is very slow (probably 20 seconds). I'm not using this computer to do anything except to shop online, watch Netflix and Hulu, and create Office documents. That being said, I assumed this laptop would be able to handle these very simple tasks. I haven't been able to attempt to watch Netflix because I've been so frustrated. I've restarted it, stopped all startup programs, and waited for all updates to download. The result is still the same. Needless to say, I'm returning it.
