Yes, they wear out once in a while...
I have an older HP OfficeJet Pro, L7780, that just keeps on working. Excellent machine, but I did notice I was losing one of the colors in my prints. Tried replacing color cartridges, then tried the auto-clean head options, but nothing worked. Finally decided to replace one of the printheads (there are two, with designated colors) and its back to working just fine. Of course, with the price of the printhead, it's almost worth replacing the entire printer with a new one. But, my HP printer just won't quit. I wish everything worked as well.

Effective replacement printer
I purchased this to replace the current print head on by 8 year old printer because of undesired lines on printed pictures. Now with the new printhead, I can enjoy printing pictures again.

NOT THE RIGHT PRODUCT
HP 88 inks apparently have multiple cartridges and this was not the correct item for my printer.
